All you can really do if you know someone is hoarding animals is report them ..so that the animals are taken out their care and provided for decently snince they are the innocents in the situation ...sentencing usually includes banning them from having more animals and being charged for neglect .... the courts could order them into treatment but rarely effective as they often will not continue it, punishing then by throwing them in jail may not do them personally any good but at least protects the animals and children from them

I used to watch Animal Cops, but it was just too depressing. The thing is, being euthanized at a shelter would be more humane than dying a slow and starving death, or being hunted as prey by wild animals, or being hit by a car. To up and leave is cold and calculated and shirking responsibilities. People tend to forget that animals have central nervous systems and actually feel pain, and they have personalities and actually suffer confusion and grief. Why not just leave your pet at a shelter? How difficult is it to do that, or if you don't have transportation, to call someone who does? I adopted a kitty last week from the local shelter. I brought him home totally emaciated and crawling with fleas (I was picking them off his face). He is the sweetest little guy, about a year old (sitting on my lap, purring, as I write this). You could see his shoulder blades and hips jutting out from his fur, which would just come off as you pet him. In a week he is already thriving, gaining weight, and his fur is softening. The first time I left the house for a few hours, he was totally stressed when I came back, it was so sad. He is the most affectionate thing I've ever seen. I can't imagine someone just up and left him. [:(] A close friend of mine had a neighbor who foreclosed, years ago, and left the house. A week later my friend was taking a walk and heard whimpering coming from the back yard. She went back there and found a scared and hungry german shepherd tied to a tree. Tied to a tree!!! My friend took the pooch home and had the most wonderful pet. Nothing happens to these people, though. Maybe a fine. Big deal.

Want the other end of this ? By circumstances ANY of us could be forced to move. Quickly, I know someone who had a major gang after him and he moved out in a night. But he took his dog with him. But let's say you can, you just can't. Can't you at least let them free ? Of they don't want to leave the house, say it' winter, leave the back door open, or at least kick a good size hole in it. They can eat snow, they can find a puddle if necessary, but not if you lock them in a house. Deeper into the soul if you will. What kind of person takes on the responsibility of caring for an animal without knowing what it's needs are. If you go to a fish store and try to buy fish that require a saltwater tank, you are not getting them unless you demonstrate knowledge of how to keep them alive. (buy all the needed shit) But any idiot can tell these morons that a cat or dog needs water. Not quite constantly, but close. And any idiot should be able to cypher that if you are a dog or a cat, you have no hands or feet and you might be locked in forever. And anyone who has ever had their water shutoff can tell you that then there is no water. So if you close that door, you condemn them to a slow hard death, so slow that some lived. And those were your pets ? Stay away. And they did nothing wrong to you, they gave you companionship, and always wanted to please (less true of cats) and some would die for you. So they did not stimulate you enough so you did this ? So it's lose lose, even when I go to the other side of the story, there is no excuse. To simply leave the door open, at least they would have one chance, who knows. But if you close them up YOU FUCKING KNOW that you sentenced them to a slow fucked up death. What did they ever do to you ? SB, leave this bitch where she belongs, in the past. That does not mean don't talk about her, it just means don't ever have any feelings for her, positive or negative. Be like Mr. Spock. Don't ever fall for anything like this again. If you can't do better I'll write you a webpage or something LOL. But then the question becomes, something alot deeper. If, when you first met her, if you had known that she was capable of such a callous and stupid act, that would probably be a big turnoff. You may have moved on to greener pastures. History would have been different, just a bit. T

I was sitting there watching the 6 o clock news and the story came on. I couldn't fucking believe it. I don't have any feelings for her, and the last thing I said to her was, "Don't ever contact me again. Don't call, don't write." I knew she had some issues, but like I said earlier this just took the cake.

the shelter didn't treat the emaciation or fleas? I adopted two kittens (seperate times). They never came home emaciated or with fleas. What kind of shelter is that? shudders..

He wasn't thriving there. They told me the longer animals stay there, the more susceptible to disease they are. Kittens get adopted right away. Adult cats don't. This guy had been abandoned and arrived at the shelter that way. They as much as they could for him. Now he's home and thriving. Can't blame the shelter for receiving animals in abused states. I'm glad they took him in at all and kept him fed and housed until I found him. [:)]

OP; I suspect your ex-friend was over-whelmed, and didn't think she had a choice. You can't even turn in animals to the humane society without a fee... I'm sure she is haunted by this. She also has serious hoarding issues. She needs help. (oh, and she is not, imo, a domme)

Those poor animals! I can only imagine the condition of that woman's kids. Christina, I had no idea there was a fee to leave animals at a shelter! Unreal.

our local animal protective league here in cleveland requires a 60 dollar fee to take in cats, i'm not sure about dogs, but i do know they charge. i called them while trying to help a friend find a shelter for her surprize kittens from the stray she adopted. i'd taken two of them in but she still had four that needed homes. i was told i'd have to wait a month and they demanded a fee. they ended up keeping the kittens and getting them fixed. My kitten-cat is also an adoptee from the local shelter. He had a respiratory infection at first and that required a few trips to the vet, but he is now happily recovered and full of mischief.

i think it cost me $60.00 to adopt. Out here in Cali many homes are going into foreclosure. bEcause of that ppl are giving up their pets in a huge amount. They have never seen anything like it before. It is really straining their budget. As you know they get donations from the public etc. Please support them. They do the best they can.

My ex in highschool turned into one of these, her mom was a stripper, they skipped the state, asked me if I could feed thier animals, told me they were only going to be gone a couple of days, I get up there to do it, the house is trashed, shit everywhere, animals everywhere, I had no idea. Made me sick, she actually had given me a rottie puppy, made me auful damn sad knowing this was where my dog came from. I called the sherrif and they confonscated all the animals, but I guess that made me the asshole for not cleaning up her mess. I had no idea this was the way things were. I actually waited a week to call, but when it became obvous to me that they wernt coming back, that is when I made the call. kind of feel robbed that I never got to personally chew thier asses for it.

It cost me $80 plus I paid $20 more for the AIDS/Herpes test. The $80 included neutering, microchipping and vaccinations, and they sent me home with a coupon for a free vet check up, a bag of cat food and a bag of kitty litter. I was impressed with their system and their people. And you're right, the shelters and rescue groups are being overwhelmed from the foreclosure issue. Very sad.
