A gay man has filed a lawsuit against two publishers of the Bible claiming the text that states homosexuality is a sin is offensive and has caused emotional distress.

He's suing for $70 million.

I thought it was an interesting article, the rewriting of the Bibles history has always fascinated me.

Umm because he says it was those particular publishings that he believes led to his becoming an outcast in his family and not the Koran?

camille..

Has he researched ALL translations to see how they differ???  No he's cherry picking to promote his particular agenda because there are scores of translations that say the same things.

But in contrast to published translations of the Koran, the passages in that Bible are beyond tame,

One cannot cherry pick free speech.

Just 2 quick thoughts on this...

First the "Fowler says that while serving a sentence in the Michigan Department of Corrections, he "gained a sincere interest" in the Bible's teachings and, over a 10 year period, "became so engrossed within" the Scriptures, he couldn't do much more than eat and sleep." seemed to jump off the page at me.

Secondly, wouldn't he have to prove that these 2 publishers did the translations themselves, that these translations were responsible for the predjudices and bigotry, and that everybody that shares in those beliefs were reading only those 2 prints of the bible?  Without even making a moral judgement here, this case should be laughed out of court, simply on the merits.  With recent court decisions, I cannot see any court getting involved in the business of dictating what a religious book can or cannot say, let alone making the decision that a specific passage is responsible for the idiocy of some homophobes.

I could be wrong,
Thadius

Because people traumatized by the Koran dont sue, they would have just blown up the publishing company offices, hijacked the corporate jet, and sawed the head off of the CEO's eldest son...

So while this guy was sitting in jail for ten years, for God knows what, he decided to find religion ... but found that some version of the Bible offended him and he decided to sue.  Since when is it against the law to be offended?  How about the fact that he may have emotionally scarred someone, possibly his own mother, by being a criminal?  It's ridiculous.

I seriously doubt that much deep-seated emotional damage has been caused by the teachings of the Qu'ran to gay Michigan natives.

Besides, there's a world of difference here:

Boy: "Dad, I think I'm gay."
Dad: "Well, Jesus hates you. And so does your whole Christian family."

vice

Michigan boy: "Dad, I think I'm gay."
Michigan dad: "Son, what would Allah have to say about that?"
Michigan boy: "He'd be cool with it."
Michigan dad: "Oh, yeah. Well, good luck with being gay. Could you just have one son for me, though? No? Well, alright."

Incidentally, I don't see what the Qu'ran has to do with this conversation.
And then someone says "well, Islamic people just blow up whomever they disagree with." And suddenly we're talking about which verses in the Qu'ran we haven't read that are way worse than the Bible.....

How about this.
Let's say I write a book that, a hundred years from now, encourages bigotry, patriotism, and mysoginy. My adherents are zealots. Who's to blame, and who has to pay the cost of all the suffering? It's an interesting case.

I don't understand why you would assume a Michigan gay man wouldn't have been exposed to the Koran, especially as he did much of his Bible-study in jail, where people have been known to both find Jesus and Allah.

Why should he be offended at this law?  He is gay, and we don't sue him.
This is all for money, and it looks like the judge already sees that intention.
I believe he is confused that you cannot ge gay and be a Christian.
Some places it is not encouraged; however, true Christianity will allow it.

Oh, btw, it is going to be hard to sue the publishers because they did not write the Bible.

It's not a matter of exposure, it's a matter of culture.
My point is simply that Michigan is not known for being steeped in Islamic culture. Hate crimes in the United States levied against U.S. citizens are practically never the result of strong Islamic influences or culture.

I reiterate that Islam and the Qu'ran have nothing to do with this conversation; I do, however, find it amusing.

It is less the particulars of this lawsuit that I find interesting and more the general shaping that the Bible has been exposed to.

I read about this earlier today and I can't find the link but there was a discrepancy during certain years that this publisher was printing it.

Michigan has one of the largest islamic populations in the USA. (They are widespread along the rust belt)

Furthermore, his prison time would have exposed him to a large number of Muslims. (For some odd reason the prisons are filled with Farrakhans disciples as well as the immigrant variety. You cant empty a bananna clip into a prison yard without hitting a muslim or someone who has been shanked or buttfucked by one LOL

The bible has undergone so many translations, transliterations, editings, censorings, and compilings over the years, that to claim 1 or 2 versions from particular publishers are the cause of the trauma he claims in his suit is laughable.  What writings does he blame for some aetheists that are just as bigotted against homosexuality?

Granted, Michigan has one of the largest Islamic populations in the United States.

But according to the Pew forum, Islam accounts for a staggering--holy Jesus, hold onto your sandals--0.6% of the United States religious demographic. I'd say that hardly accounts for an inquiry into how Islam negatively affects United States citizens (unless it's descrimination against persons of Islamic descent).

Considering that 68.3% of the United States is still a denomination of Christian--a marked decline from years past--I'd say that Christian influences are vastly more likely to have an impact (postive or negative) on the lives of United States citizens.
