My dad has been on this hunt for the last year to buy a restored Triumph TR4. He found a local dealer that deals specifically in restored classic cars, so he brought it over today to show me. It is really cherry, and I know he wants one really bad. He wants one that is restored perfectly; meaning he doesn't want one that is retrofitted. He has the money, so I told him to just buy the thing. I don't get it, but I liked seeing him happy. The very first car that he ever bought was that model in 1962. He was 19 and he bought it shortly before he went into the Army. He sold it and bought a '64 Corvette Stingray. So I have always thought it odd that he didn't want to buy a restored Corvette.

But no, he wants the very first car he ever bought. When I was 12 years old, he bought a old TR4 that was rusting in some guy's backyard. He always talked about restoring it with me and my brother, but we never did it. My dad was like that. He always talked about things he wanted to do, but work usually got in the way. When I turned 16, he gave me the car. It didn't run, and it was rusted out. So I traded a guy in town for a '69 VW Karman Gia that was in good shape and ran. I was 16, so I didn't really see the connection my father had with that car. I just wanted something that I could drive. Later on in life, I have felt guilty about that. It would have been nice having that time with my father. But it didn't happen.

Now he wants this car, and I am telling him to just buy it. He's got the money. I don't completely understand this attachment to your first car. I hated that damn VW. The brakes went out on it twice when I had it. I only drove it for about a year before I sold it and bought a Mazda pickup that was in better condition. I guess us Gen X'ers don't have anything to compare. I mean we really didn't have cars that were "classics."

So do you understand that feeling? What was your first car, and what is the attachment you have to it?

62 Willies Jeep Wagoneer.Rebuilt it w/ a 283 V8 small-block and had it for ten years.Great truck.

However I have absolutely no personal attachment to my first car as it was a piece of shit.......

For the record it was a 5 door 1984 Renault 5 auto.

God how I hate French cars!!!!

No the car I feel any attachment to was actually my second car, which was a 1985 BMW 524TD.......6 cylinder diesel.

Great car!!!

And yes I love german cars!

Mine is the one I drive now- 2000 black toyota corrolla. I like it, it's been very dependable for me and I plan to keep using it as long as it serves me well. But I don't have any particular sentimental value to it, much more looking towards a hybrid or better efficiency car in the future.

1973 Ford Thunderbird. White with white leather interior. Big back seat, which came in handy since I was only 16 at the time. Bought it for 300 bucks.
It died on Me after about 8 months. Engine seized up on the Cross Bronx Expressway on the way home from a gig one night. But that's another story for another time. Let's just say I was lucky to make it home alive that night!
Ahhhh, but that back seat was great!

Mine was a '62 Volvo sedan, no way would i want it now and have to struggle with that horrible gear shift.

Hubby's was a Rambler American, not sure of the year. It was good for one thing when we were in college:

Mine was a sage green 1966 Toyota Crown Super Saloon, with three speed manual column shift and a top speed of about 70 mph downhill with a tailwind. That was back in 1979 and ..... OK, yes, i'll fess up and come clean ....... now i drive a VOLVO (240 GL 1985 model, so a classic car in only 2 more years).

My first car was a 91 Honda Accord. Honestly, it was a piece of shit and I had no real attachment to it, except maybe as a symbol of independence. Now, I drive a 84' Buick Estate Station Wagon, powder blue and wood panel, seats 9 people, easy to fix, makes me look hot driving such a lovely boat, it looks like the iconic station wagon. The best part is that I am the almost the same age as my car. I love my car! Despite the milage and rising fuel costs, inevitable repairs my dream is to keep it running for another 25 yrs. After that, I would still be happy to have it "rest" in my lawn. I love my car.

I had a 62 Volvo 124 which I got after my first ex-wife took the 142 we jointly owned and on which I was too poor to make payments. That stick shift belonged on a tractor.

First car was a Ford Econoline van. I was 18, it was in 1971, and I had shag carpet, pillows, and a decent sound system in it. Had some nice times in the back.

It was a 1970 Chevelle, painted in a cadillac pearl white(I think the color was off an 84' caddy but I can't remember for sure)......very clean car, the interior was damn near flawless and ALL original. Ran like a top, take it up to eighty and the ride was smooth as glass.........I miss that car. Sold it when I was nineteen or so.....because I was fickle and wanted a different car.

Oh Lord, I drive a '97 Nissan pickup. I love that little truck. But, I don't see myself yearning for it when I am in my retirement. I think that's what I mean with this thread. I like looking at old cars, but I like looking at anything from history. I just wonder what I will tell my son (if I ever have a son) about the "good old days." When I graduated high school, I needed a new car to go to college with. So I sold my old piece of shit Mazda and used all my saved money from working shitty minimum wage jobs to buy a 1993 Chevy Cavalier. I called it a "Crapalier". It was a horrible car. I don't see myself or men my age looking desperately for classic Cavaliers, Ford Escorts, Chevy Chevettes, etc. when we reach our retirement years.

My first car was a 1972 blue Chevy Nova, I bought it off an old farmer that was cleaning out his barn. I loved that car. As much as I miss it, I can't even think about having to fill it up today... I could almost watch the fuel guage move as I stepped on the accelerator. Someday, perhaps I will get another one, if they haven't been outlawed by the time I can afford to feed the beast again.

Mine was a 1977 (Yellow) Chevy Impala. It was huge and UGLY but it did get me to where I wanted to go. I have no attachment to it and never want a large car like that again.

Now I drive a 2007 (white)Toyota Yaris hatchback and I LOVE it.

'68 Ghia convertible- lt blue.
my brother helped me restore it...took us 2 years.

i was such a geek, but i felt soooo ungeeky driving that cute little car around!!
...until a chick decided to turn left into me as i was going straight through an intersection in the valley.

1975 Plymouth Duster painted Petty Blue, 360 Block, 318 Crank, 360 Poliece interceptor heads, Edelbrock intake, 4 barrel AFB, 727 Torqueflight with a Hurst Dual Gate, Dana 60 with a Posi, and american racing wheels.

Damn car got me on a first name basis with law enforcement in 3 counties! I paid for it all by myself too!

I loved that car. I was the first among my best friends to have a license and a car, so it was freedom and a social life and a window on the world for us. It was cute and zippy - not a lot of power, but not very much weight. It was fun to drive (except in the winter). It got good mileage - 28-30 mpg overall - and was cheap and easy to fix. It was a lot bigger inside than it looked. You could get 5 people into it - 6 if someone would curl up in the back. If you put the back seat down there was room to screw, kind of. I don't think I could do that now - I'd be sore for days.

In a few years, I will be on the hunt for a Gremlin - purple if possible, but I'll take whatever I can get.

Ah nostalgia. My second car is the one that I miss. A '82 Pontiac Firebird that seemed to spend almost as much time in the shop as on the road. Got it in '96 and it lasted until 2005. Every so often I see one and I get the urge to pick another one up.

Right now I have a 1991 Chevy Caprice (ex cop car) that went and blew a head gasket. Too bad, that thing has a huge back seat.

ahhhhhhh memories! my first car was a 1968 VW bug, it had a speed stick, so was half stick shift, half standard transmission. One night my friends and i decided to paint designs and weird stuff all over it. That car cost $800 and lasted me at least 4 years, took me all over California on damn little money.

i just loved that bug!
