I think it boils down to whatever floats your boat.  I am a collared slave - sometimes I wear my collar when my Master visits, sometimes I don't.  The meaning behind it means much more to us than whether I grab it out of the drawer before He comes.  Our relationship is not big on protocols.  About the only one is that I am to address Him as Sir or Daddy instead of by name unless we are in public.

One of my tasks was to find a female sub.  I prefer public meeting places and getting to know someone a little in person before jumping into anything.  You can get a good feel for how nervous they are, whether they are comfortable around you, and there is no pressure of knowing that you will immediately jump into a session.  Some women have been taken in by men who are very charming on the phone or internet but are truly sadistic in person.  For me it is a case of better safe than sorry.
