lilsubl -> dang OCD!! (7/12/2008 12:46:34 PM)

so he told me to pick the day for my only assigned task this hometime & i picked today...he picked the hours...the issue that's now come up for me is this:

the task as assigned is to unpack everything & dispose of all cardboard, paper & plastic packing materials...he said i don't need to put things away, just get them unpacked...so i started doing that & after a very short time began to feel the beginnings of an anxiety attack looming...the deal is that i've never unpacked things & just set them on the floor or wherever...YIKES!!!  the dang OCD tells me that everything must be put where it belongs or it stays in a box even if hidden...help???

edited cuz i never am smart enough to check for typos till i hit the OK button....

my advice is to recognize that anxiety attacks are dangerous...the blood pressure rises and can be harmful.  I would stop what you are doing/how you are doing it and talk to him. If you continued on and had a full blown attack he would have a good reason to be upset, as you are knowingly harming yourself.

but it's just that it's different...i oughta be able to cope with that...maybe if i took all my clothes off???

How about putting away the easy stuff (say, dishes and clothes), as you go and make a special section in one room for things that have to be put away later.  Might help with the anxiety.

i wish i could...it really would make it easier for me...but that's not the task as assigned...i do love a challenge however & i refuse to allow the OCD or the anxiety to get in the way of my life...or my service!!  he told me in the beginning that he would constantly test me, so i'm thinkin this is just another one...am i a pet or a mouse??  wait, that didn't come out right...*sigh*  back to the madness.....

Did he specifically say not to put things away?  From what you wrote, it sounds like he just said you don't have to put them away, not that you couldn't.  If it was me, I'd put a few things away to help fend off the anxiety but mostly just stack stuff in one room to accomplish the assignment.  But hey, do whatever works for you.  Good luck.

Perhaps, just organizing the things into seperate piles of stuff or even just by where they will go, will help with dealing with the task at hand.  If nothing else it will clear up some room for you to unpack more.

On the other hand, if you keep in your mind that the stuff is going to get put away as soon as it is all unpacked, it might help deal with the nagging impulse you are feeling to organize it, and allow you to finish the assigned task.

Sorry but there aren't any simple answers to "curing" obsessions.  Although there are some tools (tricks) one can use to deal with them or make them not as debilitating.  I hope you find a balance with the "test".

I wish you well,
Thadius

hmmmmm....now i can't remember his exact words...i need a tape recorder when he tells me stuff...getting old is definitely not for wimps, as they say...i think as long as i get everything unpacked & the packing materials to the recycling, i can do whatever else i want....YAY!!  you the best, Syl...

[:D]

Glad I could help.  I love exploiting verbal loopholes.
