Chav (pronounced /ʧæv/), or Charv/Charver (pronounced /ʧɑːv/), is a mainly derogatory slang term in the United Kingdom for a stereotype fixated on low quality or counterfeit goods. It commonly refers to those belonging to a youth sub-culture, often stereotypically associated with a low socio-economic class, a striking dress sense and criminal activity.
The term appeared in mainstream dictionaries in 2005.[1][2] There are regional variations; in the North East of England the variant charv / charva is most commonly used (particularly in Newcastle upon Tyne and Sunderland areas, where the term originated.) and has been used since the early 1990s, while in the South East of England and South West of England chav is the usual form. The term differs depending on area and dialect; in Scotland, they are known as "neds" and in Ireland as "spides" or "skangers".
Response to the term has ranged from amusement to criticism that it is a new manifestation of classism.[3] The term has also been associated with juvenile delinquency, the "ASBO Generation", "Hoodie culture", and "Yob culture".
This is correct but it needs updating. There are two types of chavs, the real ones and the fakes one. Its kinda like the real and fake ones on here. When the "chav" fashion first became popular you could tell who was a chav from a mile away! No joke. This is because they wear burberry which is a tan colour material with stripes both ways(forgot the technical term, something like tartan). Now the burberry thing has died out and chavs mainly wear tracksuits with the bottoms tucked into their socks, fake trainers(type of shoe) and a hat that points practically to the sky. None of this is exaggerated. The real chavs are easy to get along with, dead respectable and buy designer clothing that is designer clothing and do NOT go round shouting off their mouths at anyone. The fake chavs where cheap jewellery, girls wear 10 ton of makeup, fake clothing, big hoop "gold" earrings and go round causing trouble. The majority of fake chavs drink on the streets and get into fights to seem "tough" but they are always in a crowd. If you ever found a chav on his/her own they would run away if you so much as growled at them.
The sad thing is, is more and more teenagers and young people and turning into chavs! Including my best friend =[ But yea, for those that wanted to know what a chav was, then there you go. =]
