"...Unlike the healthy Omega 3 fatty acids, the Omega 6 fatty acids and arachidonic acid found in farm-raised tilapia can cause an inflammatory response in the body. Inflammation in the cardiovascular system can cause permanent injury and lead to hypertension, arteriosclerosis, and heart disease. The researchers also cited asthma, arthritis, and other conditions related to exaggerated inflammatory response as conditions that might be made worse by eating farm-raised tilapia. ..."

Oh great,I have just begun replacing some of the red meat in my diet with, what I thought was healthier, habits such as fish.Tilapia being a favorite. Now what do I do ?

Know the source of your fish, some farm-raised fish is worse than wild-harvested. Learn about the different types available in your area, try them if you can, explore different recipes and methods of preparation, i.e. there's more than just frying or broiling them. Me, I'm a sushi lover and eat my fish raw which I know a lot of people don't like. [:D] I also love a good poached salmon filet with hollandaise sauce which probably ruins the healthiness of the salmon. Or sea bass.....

Oooo, before I forget. Make sure you trust the source of your fish. There have been reports that some places have sold cheaper fish as more expensive types, knowing that people can't tell the difference if they look similar.

Mucho gracias Lady Rain,my situation is compicated by being the worlds foremost "fuss-pot"when it comes to food...the typical meat and potatoe irish diet I became accustomed to as a child will surely be the death of me

Do not repeat do not buy or eat Sea Bass, the Patagonian Toothfish actually. It is in steep decline and if illegal commercial fishing isn't curtailed soon the fish will be wiped out. As a fish that takes a long time to reach sexual maturity it isn't a good fish for commercial fishing.

Farm raised saltwater fish, fed on a diet bearing little resemblance to their wild diet, tend to be significantly less healthy for the consumer. Tilapia may be the worst offender but farm raised salmon is very low on the Omega-3's that so many consume it for. You're really better off with canned tuna if you want the Omega-3's and don't want to buy wild caught salmon.

When buying fish, its best to find a fishmonger who processes whole salmon etc on site. Buying a whole salmon and then paying for it to be cut up is often substantially cheaper than buying cuts out of the case. Salmon freezes ok so I keep my freezer stocked at all times and have it in salads or as a main dish 2 or 3 times a week.

Thanks for the tips, DomKen.  I find myself trying to eat healthier, with tilapia being a favorite because of the mild flavor.  I may have to switch to salmon and pay a bit more at the fishmonger rather than the local supermarket, which is so handy!  drats ...

Yes,this is why I too,and I expect many other former "meat-lovers"trying to eat healthier love talapia ,the mild flavor, for those of us not in love with what we think of as too fishie...

"Farm raised" is the key issue, here.  Not only are they living and eating in an unnatural environment to them, but I saw a special, years ago (I wish I could remember what it was) that brought to light that these "fish farms" are not always kept very clean.  That grossed me out.

It is my understanding though, that darker, more oily fish (such as Salmon) are the healthier fish, as they contain more omega 3's.

I echo what LadyRainfire and DomKen wrote.  It's my understanding that Chilean Seabass (my favorite, unfortunately) is the one in steep decline.  There are other types of Seabass that aren't...but I honestly don't know.

There are 3 other species of fish called sea bass that may show up for sale.

The White Sea Bass aka Corbina is hard to catch and is not the subject of an active commercial fishery. Unless something changes a sustainable fish based on present harvest but hard to find for sale since the only way to catch it is surf angling and it is a rare catch in that situation.

Giant Sea Bass is critically endangered by overfishing. Do not buy and report any offered for sale.

European seabass is also in serious danger and export to the US should not be occuring. Italy is trying to save the fish so maybe in a few years it will bounce back.

Get your fish from the ocean.

It's not nice to fool with mother nature.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium publishes a Seafood Watch Guide, that you can download to your computer and print.  There are different versions for various regions of the US; NorthEast, SouthEast, Central, SouthWest, West Coast and Hawaii.

writes off tilapia for aquaponics. There are better fish for that anyhow. And tilapia are hard to keep from breeding-and the meat turns to leather in a microwave. I'll look into something else for the nutrient side.
