asyouwishmaster -> Where did the term "munch" come from? (11/13/2005 2:47:22 PM)

If anyone knows how this term came about, I'd love to hear the history. It just seems like an unusual word to describe what it really is. Thanks!

It's derived from "burgermunch", the first of which was in April, 1992. It was called that because the first meetings look place at a burger place in Palo Alto called "Kirk's". Eventually, burgermunch was truncated to munch.

The original term was Burgermunch. The Burgermunch was first held in San Fransico in 1992 at the Palo Alto Hamburger Stand.

I found this bit of information.

The very first munch, according to several who were there, was a gathering of 13 folks at the “Flames” coffee shop at El Camino Real and Lawrence Expressway in Santa Clara, California....

No, it wasn't a BDSM meeting.

It was more a casual place to meet folks who you knew via the internet were interested in BDSM.

I helped run and then ran the Applemunch in NYC from 1994 to 1997 myself. I really like the munches I've been to there and in Indiana for the most part.

i have never been to one, nor met many pepole interested in BDSM, but looking at profiles from Norway i see that there are several pepole on this webpage in my city, so perhaps i will make some more lifetyle interested frinds over time.

The post your URL references is regarding an entirely different, women only, gathering. It's not the first munch announcement.

That *IS* the first munch ..... look again at the dates.

stef -> RE: Where did the term "munch" come from? (11/14/2005 6:43:20 AM)

The dates aren't the issue, the *event* is.

From the link posted earlier in this thread:

"After that first meeting in Santa Clara, a new venue was found and announced. The Munch concept would be the "BurgerMunch". STella announced it to the regular posters on alt.sex.bondage.org. and posted to the new discussion list that she would be at the outdoor patio seating area of Kirk's Steakburger joint on California Street, Palo Alto, California, at the same day and time every week, and she hoped others would join her. This has been dated, according to legend, as April, 1992."

Did kinky people eat together before April, 1992? Duh. Of course they did. But the Burgermunch, the named event that occurred on a weekly basis in the some location, didn't happen until 1992.

While I won't get into the discussion about the origins and antiquity of the concept, I _will_ get into explaining the term itself.

"Munch" is the contraction and melding of two words - "meeting" and "lunch" - It was originally used to describe a gathering of people over the mid-day meal. A "Meeting for Lunch". Literally. It has since become a term used in the BDSM community to describe almost any meeting where eating will be part of the function and play will not. Whether it's breakfast, lunch, or dinner, in a restaurant or meeting room, whether the meal is served or everyone chips in for "pot luck", if there are kinky folks and food in a fairly vanilla environment, it's a "munch".

Hope that helps!
- Geoff

PS: Burghermunch is one of Pittsburgh, PA's pansexual munchgroups. http://www.burghermunch.org

If that be the case, could you help in tracking down the alt.sex.bondage post that followed? I would hate to keep on making an ass out of myself linking to the wrong post every time this question comes up.

Hi james,

I'm afraid I can't help you there. I've only seen "muchies" as a mis-spelled variation of "munchies". "Munchies" could mean either quick easy snacks, or a mis-spelled version of "munches". Sorry I can't be of much help!

YIK,
- Geoff
