Recently I was having a conversation about sunglasses.  I answered that I like aviators. This conversation was with a friend who picks out the specifics.

I consider the "aviator" to be the general large rounded shape. (Form)
He considers aviators to be the glass hue, getting darker toward the top. (Function)

I know this is probably the most unimportant question ever asked on the internet, but does anyone have an opinion on this?

I've always thought of the shape when I hear aviators.

Actually, there is only one real "aviator sunglasses" the Randolph Engineering HGU-4/P http://www.randolphusa.com/pc-65-2-aviator.aspx They have bayonette temples so that ears arent torn off by G-Forces, amd come in 52, 55, and 58mm sizes. They are a solid color throughout there is no "gradient" I wear nothing but those and they are required uniform items for those who work for me.

Thanks. Those are without a doubt the very best sunglasses in the world... Since 1977 they have been worn by every pilot in every branch of the US Military. They are what the military chooses to protect its $6,000,000 training investment in its pilots so you cant get a better endorsement than that. Plus they look great and chicks dig them [:D] Just as a little aside topic - some of the most expensive designer sunglasses are essentially useless as protection. My ex-wife had a $400 pair that essentially offered almost no protection against UV or IR, they just made the designer money while doing nothing for your eyes...

I'm suprised, for the exact reason you pointed out, they aren't ~$1,000.  They probably could afford to be, being the best lenses.

Nice of them to keep it affordable.

I have to wear prescription glasses, and I had those Transition lenses before.  I hated those things; they don't change shade inside a car.  So I just bought two pair of glasses with one set tinted with all the UV protection.  I don't like the wire rim glasses, they get bent and you have to go in and get them adjusted constantly.  So, I have been wearing horn rimmed glasses for years.  I don't have the big dorky ones; I actually laid down a big chunk of change for them.  I never liked the Aviator style glasses.

I dig aviators.  I'm fairly confident saying "Is there a problem officer?" in them, with the tune of Hawaii 5-0 in the background is the only way for a straight man to get out of a ticket.

I tend to think of the generic term "aviators" as shape. And, I address anyone who wears them as "Maverick".

So I am doing it the wrong way when the cop pulls me over and asks "Do you know why I pulled you over?" and I reply "Because mines bigger?"

I buy the $8-$15 drugstore sunglasses.
That way I don't feel too bad when I sit on them or lose them.

I tried some Ray Ban aviators but didn't get on with them. The Randolphs are much better.

Ahhh.... the 70's called....they want their glasses back.

I use to wear those things when I was in the Military, not my style anymore.  They are great glasses, but can you say "Top Gun" wannabe any louder?
