I'm both a sadist and a dominant and a fairly masochistic sub when I switch. I know many dominants who I would not consider sadists, and some sadists who really are not dominant. I have a pain slut slave with a sadistic streak. I've known sadist dominants who had a masochistic bent and liked to be topped on ocassion.

Although I think we need these labels to communicate effectively, that starts breaking down when we put people into either/or boxes.

That is your opinion, and I would like to question why you do not believe a woman cannot be a sadist?

Being in control has nothing to do with sadism. Being a giver or/and receiver of pain as a sadist has no gender preference.

I'm a sadist when I get the chance to be. I'm most 'in the zone' when I am physically beating my boy. I tried playing with the Rimba - and while electrical play is fun, it doesn't get my 'blood up' the way striking him does. Movement restrictions... hot wax... all that other stuff doesn't really do it for me. I have to be swinging my arm(s) and landing blows to be truely 'happy'. So... only a very specific thing actually trips my trigger.

Does that make me a sadist? Don't know. Seems to me a twue sadist wouldn't care what type of pain was being inflicted, as long as it existed.

Plus, there is the fact that I am very affectionant to my boys. I enjoy giving the pleasure mixed with the pain. I'm not sure a twue sadist would.

I don't know if I qualify as a "true" sadist or not by anyone else's definitions. What I -do- know is that, among the things I want to be able to do to/with at least some of my servants are things that are exceptionally painful and/or intense. For me, it is as much about my capacity to be able to inflict pain and watch that pain be embraced as it is to be served and make the rules.

I will be in charge -- that is a given. Circumstances will certainly modify the manifestations of my command, but will not negate the reality that I am in command.

I will also willingly, knowingly, and intentionally inflict pain, for the joy of seeing the intensity of the reaction.

Neither of the above two situations are categorically inclusive. I'm perfectly happy to have someone that I control, and not inflict pain on hir because it's not hir 'thing', as long as xhe is a contributory member of the household. In the same way, I'm perfectly happy to top someone just for the opportunity to inflict pain, whether or not I have any long-lasting 'control' relationship with hir. However, of the two, the one that I miss most is when I don't have someone that I can pierce, cut, burn...

Nothing I do will be without the other person's consent, though -- so perhaps that makes me less 'real'.

First, I want to thank everyone for contributing. I think since I have read the responses, I believe women can be sadists. I also think that it can make a difference as to how you inflict pain. You are inflicting pain to trip your trigger, so if a whip, or some other type of whipping instrument is what does it for you...then something else may not be as exciting. I can understand that fully.
I think I have come more to realize that all Dommes want control. But there are some out there that just like the reaction to pain being inflicted by them. I find it all very interesting. Thank you again.

I don't know, but I do recall some kind of survey that tested the intensity of play of men vs. women and it turned out that the lesbian couples were the most sadistic of them all.

I have heard the same TN, that Lesbian Dommes are the most sadistic. From what I have seen on the internet and in conversations with others I believe there is a certain segment of Lesbian Dommes that are the most sadistic. I think I am just a Dominant Woman with some very serious sadistic tendencies. But recently was told that I'm not a "twue" anything, so maybe I'm just a nightmare to people.
