About 2 months ago I moved into my current apartment. Since moving in I have noticed an investation. No not roaches, or mice, or even rats but flies. Daily. There are swarms of them especially in the bathroom and the kids bedroom. It is driving me nuts. I have no idea where they are coming from. I kill them then hours later another swarm appears. The window are closed and the front door is closed, they aren't running in and out. So I am stumped at where they are coming from or how to stop the annoying pests from reappearing time and time again. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Nika

It's possible that they're coming up from the drains. Pour full strength bleach (about a cup) down EVERY drain in your abode about every 5-6 days. It happens here during the summer. Doing the previously mentioned is the most successful way I've found to stop them.

i had the same problem back in Maryland ,every time it rained the house with invaded by flies,,they came in thru a small hole where the cablewire entered the house,,sealed the hole ,no more flies

Maybe something crawled into one of the vents and died? I don't know what kind of air conditioning system you have, but I do know that flies will be attracted to even small amounts of blood/bodily secretions under the right circumstances.

Surata, We don't have Central heat and air so no vents of that nature and I checked my attic space, nothing dead there. I have sealed every little hole I could find (not that hole ya pervs). pure, I will try the bleach down the drain. Heck it couldn't hurt I just would NEVER have thunk they would be coming in from there.

I'm not sure. LOL It's only been a problem the last 3 years or so. I purchased my home in '95, and it wasn't a problem beforehand. Several of my co-workers that live in a 2 mile radius of my house have the same problem. As long as I keep doing the bleach thing, I don't have a problem.

Why would they be coming through the drains though, and how do they get into those drains?

check the walls for dead bodies... and watch as much CSI as you can to get ideas on where else to check

Hmmmm ... sure sounds like a scene outta The Exorcist ... been summoning up the devil recently? Maybe one of the kids is Rosemary's Baby? Does the baby have a basso profundo voice & speak in Latin or ancient Greek? The drains were a good idea ... and if the water traps don't have any water in them, then there would be no block from the sewage lines for the flies to get back into the house from the drains. Kids hiding meat or anything worse in the house? A 2 week old baloney or tuna fish sandwich could support a lot of life! Believe it or not ... when I was a kid ... the 2 neighbor kids had guitars (1 ea) that they stored under their beds ... and at one point I found out they'd been peeing & shitting in their guitars & kept them under their beds. I didn't notice if they showed up with bruises ... or guitars over their heads over the following months ... but I'm sure there were repercussions. BUT ... also consider the overflow drains ... I used to have "fungus flies" that could party in those overflow drains from the sinks & waltz into the house w/o any obstruction. You can either dump clorox down those drains ... or ... I plugged up the top of those drains w/ laundry soap powder ... not dense enough to stop a real flooding sink ... but tight enough to discourage setting up housekeeping in that drain. quote: ORIGINAL: SweetNika flies. Thank you Cali! MidievilDaddy, I have searched the apt. up and down for things that could be attracting them like stashed food, waste, ect. (we do have pets so I thought well maybe) but I haven't found anything of that nature. I will do the bleach down the drains and plug the overflow with soap or something of that nature. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

we have this problem on occasion but it is because we live on a farm. They seem to be in the walls...

We don't live on a farm but we live near a large field and woods.

Dear SweetNika, I saw this on a few movies - get a priest, quick! However, make sure your apartment is on the ground floor. If not, be sure to properly tie off your priest, just as a safety precaution should he go bungyless jumping out of your top story window. Ah, and this is VERY important. Never EVER go up into the attack or down into the basement when you hear any strange sounds. Oh, and make sure you put your television outside at night. Just being helpful, Winsome

Wasn't it Amityville Horror where all the flies kept gathering on the windows? If blood starts running down your walls and voices start saying "Get Out!", I'd be gettin' out.

Nika, The house we lived in 2 years ago had what an exerminator called "cluster flies." It was going to cost a lot of money, so the owner wouldn't pay for it. They were coming out of vents and the overhead light fixtures. They were breeding and coming out of the attic area. The Things and I made a game of killing them and one night and we had a pile 83 deep. [:'(] I hope you don't end up with a swarm like that, too.
