I am in my 70s.  I still lust for this lifestyle, although it avails me not, but can any of you younger habituees of this site imagine what it was like to be BDSM oriented in the 1940s and 50s?

Sink onto your knees and thank whatever gods there may be about the availability of this venue..  There is not a one of you (except, perhaps, the perfect female, whom I would not kill to have had it available 60 years ago) a time when I suspected  that I might be the only such person alive.

I genuinely hope for the best for you, but you MUST open your hearts and minds to those new ones, still finding their way into ou r strange but erotic world.

(And, by the way, I am STILL available for the right OLDER lady (i.e. more than 50 ... OK 30 will do) who is not disturbed by gray hair. and failing intelligence.

True enough, having an online venue for exploring what would have been criminalized in another era is a luxury.  Do people realize that?  Well, maybe not...sadly, I know people who think they have a "right" to cable TV.

I'd add to this but maybe I should wait a few decades first, before bitching.

I doubt your intelligence is failing in any appreciable way. Thanks for the kind thoughts.

It cannot have been easier. Yet, in some ways I doubt it was terribly harder. Many of us were raised my parents with the morals and values of the 40's and 50's. If the family is a close one, it still affects us.

I hope that the next few generations will learn a bit more acceptance.

I am grateful that I was able to figure out my sexual orientation and my interest in BDSM at a young (well, 18) age. I can't imagine what it would be like even 20 years ago. Thanks for your post!

There's still a long ways to go as far as social acceptance, particularly in some of the more conservative states.. but certainly a far cry from criminalization, or so I would like to believe :)

This I can imagine. Last year I read a book which I think was called I am my own wife about Berlin transvestite Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, who was an antique dealer and collector of antique furniture born Lothar Berfelde. She had a penchant for S/M, she killed her father as a young boy and survived both the Nazis and communism.

There's a play of the same title by Doug Wright based on his conversations with Charlotte. It's a one man play which premiered off Broadway in 2003, in 2004 it took the Drama Desk Award for Best New Play, a Tony award, and the Pullitzer Prize for drama among others. If you ever get the chance to see the play it's well worth it, as is reading any book about Charlotte because her story is truly fascinating and in places touching.

I've spent time in Berlin and know of the historic significance of Freidrichstrasse railway station and some of the streets around Oranienburg Tor. I don't think even the Eastern European timewarp could ever come close to what was in a bygone era.

Thank you for sharing.

I'm very lucky, and there's not a day that goes by that I don't think about it.
It must have been tough back then to be into the lifestyle. (If you could even refer to it as that back then.)
But for what it's worth, I will say one thing...Men's suits in the 40's were great. That's style!

I'm thankful I live in this day and age every time I take my mental meds instead of shock treatment or lockup and every time I fly instead of riding a wagon.

Was a far different world back years ago  before the net  I have friends that have been in the lifestyle some 25 /30 years ago  and there were a few underground clubs  back then in very major cities which is how they got their start..I was still vanilla then and I hated going to bars to meet people  so made use of newspaper personals at time  and what a pain ...lol I could not imagine what is would be like to try meet kink minded people that way ..when you would not be able to state your interests in your ads...The gay male population was trying to come out then and they suffered horrible abuse/beatings.   I know from my step mom that years earlier a single wowmen could not even go to a bar in most places they had to have a male escort with them, and many work places were segregated   even in the newspapers job listings were seperate for men and woman so that would have made it even more difficult to meet people.  The hippy generation really opened the doors to sexual freedoms/openess and became a historical sexual  turning point especially for women

Well 20 years ago it was 1988 and depending on where you lie and who you hung out with people were probably more open to the lifestyle. But heck I was only 2 and I grew up around some strange people so what do  know.

Heh, glad I wasn't born 30 years earlier, sad I wasn't born 30 years later.  Time moves on and I think I'll just enjoy the moment I'm in.

Underling,

Thanks for making us pause and smell the roses. Sometimes, it's easy to forget how much progress we've made from the time of our grandparents and even from that of our parents.

BDSM, as we more or less know it today, really began in the years after WW2. In the 50's we had Bettie Page and John Willie cranking out fantasy material for a deeply underground community. It was there... but finding it was difficult, and sometimes dangerous. But, thanks to the advent of the internet, and the explosion of Pan-sexual groups and clubs in the 1980's, things have gotten vastly easier for everyone. (Including yourself)

I was at an event several years ago where a very elegant looking older gentleman in his mid 80's was being served by three extremely attractive 30 and 40 year old women. He was their "daddy" and by the look of it, everyone was very happy with the situation. So there's always hope!

Now it's not so much a problem of finding other who share your desires... (now it's as easy as cruising the net with a few keystrokes and mouse clicks) as having the courage to persue them. Actually talking to people, and showing up for meetings. But then, that has always been the other half of the equasion.

no matter how much we want or desire something to be it is culture and civilization that always will make the choices
for the greater good

we not the norm so there for  what should be accepted   I really do not want to be  i love being different who wants to blend in
thats kinda of borning  wants everyone does it and wants it just not cool anymore kinda like not being speacil anymore

I feel lucky in the respect that I am in this era.

Without the knowledge I have gained online and through todays publications I would not know why I felt this way. I would have probably continued being vanilla and not being truly happy with my sex life. Knowing that what I feel and what I want is felt in others, and that there are others who go so much further than me, has helped me to express what I want and need to my partner.

How would you, as a woman tell your husband in the 40's, that you want to be spanked, need to be spanked, need to be tied up and subdued sometimes? And if you did have the courage to tell your husband this (I say husband because of course ppl did not have sex outside of marriage, lol) how would you know that they wouldn't take it too far for you? That they wouldn't take it as an excuse to abuse you?

Being able to express myself fully has been a wonderful experience that I am still going through, and I wouldn't give that up for anything!
