Mine was 71 and I thought it should be a bit higher.  Like Ken, about everything I need is within walking distance and I do walk a lot, but the malls, well, that's a different story.

urtoy -> RE: Your neighborhood's walkability score (7/18/2008 2:25:33 AM)

This is cute. It listed the local airport as a school, a trucking company as a bookstore, and a long defunct gas station as a grocery store. I didn't need this to know I'm dependent on my truck, but I love driving almost as much as I love living in the middle of nowhere.

There was a story on Yahoo! or MSN or some such place listing Houston as the most walkable city... Now, I live about thirty minutes south and I put my address in the lil dealie... No way would I walk anywhere around here. I agree -- it's totally off! Not to mention walking a mile and a half in about a ZILLION percent humidity and in the 90s is no picnic. Pleh.

My car's name is Charlie. And I love him dearly <33 ;-)

Monkey, Yeah I saw that same article and Im in the bay area. Definitely not a wise idea to walk around here from a standpoint of not being smushed or snakebit. Could you imagine walking down Space Center Blvd from the Sonny Carter Training Center to say Bay Area Blvd during a typical Houston afternoon? Forget about doing it at night you would have no blood left from the mosquitos! I would pay to watch some people walk through South Houston and Pasadena up by Shaver / Southmore at night LOL. Yep, walkable city alright... I think Im gonna leave my house now, so I can get up to the Asian Gourmet on the Gulf Freeway feeder road by tonight? [:D]

JulieorSarah -> RE: Your neighborhood's walkability score (7/18/2008 2:41:57 AM)

it said 60 for the address, and the stuff they listed was rather accurate, but missed some recent (last 5 years) developments.

As a USA site thought it's be a waste of time, i live south of Sydney Australia ... it was a pleasant surprise.

Asherdelampyr -> RE: Your neighborhood's walkability score (7/18/2008 2:44:32 AM)

I got 74/100
thought it might be higher, what with 2 game stores and 2 groers (not to mention Wal-Mart) within easy walking distance

soul2share -> RE: Your neighborhood's walkability score (7/18/2008 4:30:26 AM)

I got about a 78.....it listed all the smaller places to shop, not mentioning the 3 large grocery stores that are within a mile or two from my house.  But it doesn't take into account the weather conditions...I went just about 4 blocks today and by the time I got home, I was soaked thru to the skin from sweating.  When it's cooler here is when I plan to walk and hit all the cool thrift shops, antique places and other quirky little stores that populate the area I live in.

pahunkboy -> RE: Your neighborhood's walkability score (7/18/2008 4:37:16 AM)

60 and the places listed arent the places I frequent due to price or selection.

Quivver -> RE: Your neighborhood's walkability score (7/18/2008 5:13:40 AM)

another 0 here, the closest place of business they say is 2.5 miles....

petdave -> RE: Your neighborhood's walkability score (7/18/2008 5:33:03 AM)

Another 0... closest place of business, 3.39 miles.

No surprises there...

MMistress -> RE: Your neighborhood's walkability score (7/18/2008 5:49:16 AM)

I scored a big zero as well, which does not suprise me in the least since this is a very rural area. The closest business listed is a bar that is 1.79 miles away and it burned down about 3 months ago........*sighs*  [sm=car.gif] I'll just have to keep driving.

LaTigresse -> RE: Your neighborhood's walkability score (7/18/2008 6:00:29 AM)

I am a zero! Imagine that. Except for a couple of bars and a Dairy Mart (which is actually on the other side of the river where there is currently no bridge) everything is listed as being 13.5 miles away or more. Which is why I make lists, plan my trips and do most of my shopping on the way home from work ratherr than make special trips. Most weekends are spent right here, at the farm. If I wanted an active social life, I would not live out here.

Argentopal -> RE: Your neighborhood's walkability score (7/18/2008 6:12:37 AM)

Joining the "0" club.  But we knew that when we moved out here.  I plan shopping and other outtings carefully, combine as many errands as possible and spend a whole day maybe twice a month in the "big city".  As often as possible I go into town with Argent in the morning, drop him off at work, and spend the day with grocery shopping and stuff.  But out here we have stars and peace and quiet, we don't lock our doors, and I sit outside and feed a family of grey foxes, a herd of deer, hummingbirds, and just relax in the beauty and peace all around me.  I would not trade it back for a score of 100!

christine1 -> RE: Your neighborhood's walkability score (7/18/2008 6:16:11 AM)

i got a 48, but they listed the local pharmacy as a hardware store and left quite a few very close businesses out.  [8|]

BOUNTYHUNTER -> RE: Your neighborhood's walkability score (7/18/2008 6:21:33 AM)

A big zero here as well, the nearest store of any kind is 8 miles away,My ol' dog and I do walk about 5 miles every morning..WE used to run 5 miles but we both are now ol' dogs so we now walk.. smile..

Maya2001 -> RE: Your neighborhood's walkability score (7/18/2008 6:47:20 AM)

LOL  my score was 35 out of a 100  so car dependant

but listed a donut shop as a restaurant ,  cinema was a stereo shop,  a bar was a coffee shop,  library was the law association  ???, book store is the christian amourary, clothing store was a used clothing store, the hardware store  is a woodworking shop  and is not even in the correct  town ..if things were listed correctly the score would be a lot lower

sirsholly -> RE: Your neighborhood's walkability score (7/18/2008 6:50:29 AM)

my score is zero!

gotta love the country life.....[:)]

3!

Hahaha the closest place listed to me is a nudist camp. The distance is way off though on everything.

[:D]
I've never actually been there. A lot of small planes circle the area as well as hot air balloons. The weird thing is that the place is a christian family nudist camp and it is right next door to a strange alternative church of enlightenment. The sort of place that has a dome and does drumming lolol. What an odd mix!

ArtCatDom -> RE: Your neighborhood's walkability score (7/18/2008 8:43:02 AM)

It gave me a 42, which seems very wrong. There are multiple restaurants, bars and convenience stores within a half mile of where I live. There are two restaurants and a convenience mart within a block of me (as well as a dry cleaner and optician)! The mall is just shy of a mile's walking distance, but only one store in the mall came up on the map (the Waldenbooks). Their information is quite spotty for my area, which is odd considering that I live just outside the city and only two miles from the airport.

MzMia -> RE: Your neighborhood's walkability score (7/18/2008 8:46:10 AM)

What a cute thread slaveboyforyou!
I KNEW that my score would be low, ugh, I am certainly car dependent here.

Walk Score:[image]http://www2.walkscore.com/images/progress-spacer.gif[/image] 6 out of 100 —  Car-Dependent

The funny thing is though, I am CERTAINLY car dependent, but I can drive 4 miles
to the nearest Metro and catch the train!

*This thread is a great reminder about how MOST American's live......don't try to compare the way most
Americans have to live by European standards or how much they pay for gas in Europe!*
