We had a couple of threads about people not using or wanting to use a car.  Coincidentally, Yahoo had a story about that very same topic and linked to this site.  You can type your address in and it gives you a "walkability score" for your area.  I thought it was interesting.

http://walkscore.com/

I scored 18 out of 100; meaning I am car dependent according to the site results.

LOL Mine is was 11 but it was IMHO wrong. Two of the places they had as "walkable" is only that close if you swim to them as the road to get to them requires you to drive to Seabrook and then get on the other road... The distance they showed would require a bay swim LOL

Edited to add: The walkability score reflected for my neighborhood also didnt take into account that I need more to live than merely churches, supermarkets etc...  I sure as hell cant walk to the FAA Houston FSDO and without pretty regular visits there I dont need to go to the supermarket anyway as I wont be eating LOL.

My score was 14, but it should be even less since they couldn't use my actual road.  They calculated it from a larger road about three miles from me.

That calculator is no good.  I live in San Francisco and it said my score was 49 out of 100, and therefore car-dependent.  You'd either have to be a lunatic, lazy, or have nothing better to do with your money to own a car in San Francisco.  If my neighbourhood isn't walkable, no one's is.

Yeah it wasn't perfect on mine either.  It listed a 'mom and pop' video store as a restaurant down the road from me.  I thought that was odd, considering they didn't list the Subway and local pizza place right next to it.  lol

mine was 82, which was a shocker...but the grocery store they listed is only a little better than a liquor store.

doesn't matter, I don't really go anywhere anyway

Zero. But their distances were way off. They claim the local library is 1.87 miles, I know it's closer to 3.

My neighborhood has a score of 89.  I walk for the most part, except for grocery shopping or some other specific errands.

It gave me a 22, but managed to completely miss the existance of an entire strip mall, with a liquor store and good mexican restaurant, within a mile.  Of course, they have no better clue about the freshness of the milk at the nearest grocery, than that the bar 0.07 miles from my old place was gay.

I got a score of 85 very walkable. Which is what I expected. I only occasionally drive to work, the "L" is only a little slower and much cheaper and everything else I need, including the BDSM club that didn't make it into their DB, is within walking distance.

3!

Hahaha the closest place listed to me is a nudist camp. The distance is way off though on everything.

Huh... 63.  But I also noticed they were missing about 18 things on there, all within under a mile.  One of them where I work.  *SHRUG*  I'd have rated it closer to about an 85+  I live in an awesome neighbourhood.

Mine was a 23 out of 100 - car dependent.

I totally agree. While I can and do walk to the pool and the park and occasionally to my kids' schools, there is not much else besides a convenience store within easy walking distance.

Hehe, you must live in that house down the road from me... it is closer to town and the store.

There was a story on Yahoo! or MSN or some such place listing Houston as the most walkable city... Now, I live about thirty minutes south and I put my address in the lil dealie... No way would I walk anywhere around here. I agree -- it's totally off! Not to mention walking a mile and a half in about a ZILLION percent humidity and in the 90s is no picnic. Pleh.

My car's name is Charlie. And I love him dearly <33 ;-)

Heh, I'm a bit surprised by the 85 out of 100 here. Amusing to see all the shiny little icons pop up and the little house travel higher up the bar. Reminds me of that old mountain climber game on the Price is Right. Of course the local game shop was labeled as a book store, and the local church looks like it's showing as a school.

Do they wear shoes when going to and from their cars, or just streak right by you?

-fr-

my apartment scored at a 62 - somewhat walkable. master's house is 42 - car-dependent. having navigated his neighborhood quite often on foot i will say it's actually sometimes easier to walk there than around my area :)
