AAkasha -> Portrayals of the S&m community in mainstream media (7/18/2008 9:52:46 AM)

I was recalling the scene from Howard Stern's movie "Private Parts" where he had a weather lady who was a dominatrix.  The scene with her is predictably lame and lacks any kind of sensuality, yet captures what seems to be a common theme/style in F/m porn.

It's at about 9 minutes in.

What do you think of it?

And then, on the other hand, there is Mistress Heather from CSI... [8|]

They could have done so much more with that scene. It wasn't funny or shocking in any way. I think they should have just shown the Domme looking over a collection of bdsm toys. In this collection would be the obvious and the not so obvious bdsm toys. Also there be be a random kitchen appliance thrown in. The Domme would then select one of the toys and turn to face someone off camera. She would give an evil smile and you would hear an off camera voice say..."no NO NOT THAT NOooooooooo"

This could have all been done in a PG or R format.

Eh, fairly in line with most mainstream portrayal of nearly any non-assimilated subculture. Mocking and blunt. *shrugs*

Of course, counting on Howard Stern or anything Stern-related for nuanced and appreciative views on anything is kind of like squeezing a stone really hard and hoping to wring out 5 Alive.

No doubt this post will draw ire, but nevertheless- Most depictions of S/M in mainstream media are fairly tame, but accurate in that they mock the inherent lameness of most peole in the lifestyle. That CSI episode was hilarious. The fact is, it is not particularly interesting or shocking watching a bunch of freaks with their rope tricks and leather fetishes, it is pretty laughable, but nothing to get offended by. I enjoy many aspects of the lifestyle, no question, but it is a largely personal experience. I do not participate in any groups or gatherings of the "BDSM community", I think an individual's fetishes are a matter of preference and appreciate these groups for connecting those with similar interests and being a kind of filter to find and see what you like. But call a spade a spade- it's mostly made up of the socially inept, who jerk off in front of the computer, or go to "dungeons" (another laughable term) to get their kicks- not particularly shocking, just kind of sad- similar to the way it is depicted in the media.

Yes...unfortunately it does. Aspects that don't resonate include:

- Bitchy tone
- Black leather and half-mask
- Dungeon-feel (even with the windows) and wooden cross
- Serving as an ashtray
- Verbal abuse

Acknowledging that greater context would be helpful, it's hard to imagine these two people caring one iota about the other beyond what each can do for the other.

Ok, so there is a large portrayal of Dommes as being leather bound, mean, freaks.

Are there any that are not? Im interesting in seeing something in the mainstream media(movies)  that didnt try to pass this stereotypic idea.

I remember a similiar, though not SO horrible, portrayal in a movie called 'Real Men'.
It had James Belushi and John Ritter in it.

While it was done in a comical view certainly, it wasnt totally bad. It actually shows  james belushi's character submitting to her and her soothing him afterwards. It was actually pretty hot, though the initial part is funny.

So anyone see any GOOD portrayals?

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Portrayals of the S&m community in mainstream media (7/18/2008 5:45:34 PM)

A movie with Jim Belushi and John Ritter that came out in 1987 titled, Real Men had a scene with a dominatrix.  It was a comedy, so it was supposed to be ridiculous.  Of course I was 13 years old when that movie came on television, so it provided ample material for *ahem* hobbies I had.  LOL.  I can think a lot of movies that had S/M elements that I remember from my adolescence.  A lot of them were stereotypes, but portrayals of a number of different lifestyles are stereotyped in movies and television.

I am sure that AAKASHA could have directed a better scene than that one!

Lashra -> RE: Portrayals of the S&m community in mainstream media (7/20/2008 8:48:29 AM)

Most of the S&M that I've seen in "vanilla" movies is very lame. If it is a Master/femslave its always very soft and sensual if its a Domme/maleslave she is always the harsh aggressive bitch from hell.

I think its written to appeal to the average person, many women like the flowery romance stuff  [sm=hearts.gif]and many men like the aggressive bitch from hell [sm=mistress.gif]. It has nothing to do with reality just what appeals to most people.

I saw a movie with a sweet, naive, backwards librarin... guy goes home with her and before he knows it, he is tied and in serious trouble.  She comes out dressed to the image of most fantasy expectations and she has a wall that moves and exposes every kind of toy I have ever seen.  Needless to say... it was a joke... but the look on his face was very nice and I wouldn't mind having a wall full of toys like that.

slavekal -> RE: Portrayals of the S&m community in mainstream media (7/20/2008 10:07:18 AM)

She is a real person.  Played herself in the movie.  I think she still lives in Michigan.  Our lifestyle is mostly played for laughs in the mainstream media.  Beats torture and murder.  Let's face it.  It is kind of funny.

I am not a regular CSI watcher but I did see the first episode that brought in Lady Heather. I think overall the portrayal of BDSM was positive. In particular, they presented Lady Heather as sophisticated and intelligent in that episode. At one point, she told the female detective that she would make a good dominatrix. The female detective responded that she took that statement as a compliment.

I saw this episode at my buddy's house. He and his wife are avid CSI fans and recorded the show. I enjoyed the episode so I watched it twice. The second time, his sister, who I think has domme potential, was there. It was coincidence that she was there when I played it the second time...I swear! ;-)

Cheers,

I think it was something cats. I was pleasantly surprised to see the preview for that movie while waiting for the feature film I had gone to see.

I like to see BDSM in mainstream media. It might be awakening the interest in some, and it might be making it less foreign an idea for some. I particularly enjoy scenes that give to BDSM a touch of glamor.

Here is a video a domme friend recently sent to me.

movies like 'real men ' the secretary " 9 1/2 weeks " even the gimp in pulp fiction ," they are a writers view  an outsiders view for the most part ,of what is going on  , most have nothing to do with our community . I prefer things like vice and consent, even preaching to the perverted  are more realistic .I think Eddie Izzard explained it best when he was speaking of  transvestites and the media in the HBO special dressed to kill . The media  shows CD trans people and brands them weirdos or fuck heads , while he see himself an executive transvestite that fancies girls .When they show on the news some  kidnapper who has a dungeon and they show the torture chamber  the public thinks ooh thats what we all do ..nooooooooo those again are the  weirdos and fuckheads ,yet public sheep mentalities  run like lemmings  sometimes from media views .

I think Lady Heather's upcoming appearance tonight is her 4th if I'm not mistaken in the series.

Martin Scorsese made a movie over 20 years ago called "After Hours".Now it wasn't a Domme/sub scene but Linda Fiorentino is bound quite intricately and gagged to a studio apartment support beam by a Master. And the usual leather clad Domme thing in a movie Doplh Lundgren did where she had him suspended upside down and gagged as well..probably the best one i seen but i can't remember the name of the movie.

slavekal -> RE: Portrayals of the S&m community in mainstream media (11/6/2008 1:22:35 PM)

Don't be too harsh on Howie.  That was a true account.  And the movie dominatrix is actually the woman who used to do that segment on his show.  She lives in my town.
