Relax... some folks show their ass every time they post without even having an avatar.

So the same thing applies to escape artists who do performances under water, some swimmers, and of course kids who play "who can stay under water longer" at the community pool?  I am not being inflamatory, I'm asking a serious question.

Actually, Aakasha, the same thing -does- apply to escape artists. If they are unable to get out of the anoxic environment, lose their "calm" and start to fight their captivity, the anoxia can kill them.

For voluntary breath-holding, it's a little different. The body will not allow, under normal circumstances, anoxia to continue past the point where there would be brain damage and death -- also, as the neurologists explained to us, when we hold our own breath, our body actually -relaxes-, in an attempt to conserve oxygen. Blood vessels expand, increasing the oxygen flow to the brain, and the body responds by reducing oxygen flow to muscles and other organs and increasing it to the brain. With -involuntary- anoxia, the body goes into -fear- mode. Instead of reducing the required oxygen, the body actually -fights-... the heart pumps much harder, blood vessels constrict to the brain in order to provide oxygen to the muscles so the person can fight and flee. According to the neurologists, that is why involuntary anoxia is much more dangerous than holding your own breath -- not to mention that, if you're holding your own breath and you pass out, you'll automatically start to breathe again.

The risk with self-anoxia using plastic bags, rope, etc., is that you'll pass out in the anoxic state and not be able to free yourself before you die of oxygen deprivation.

LOL... take said picture of ass off your profile or use another picture for your profile pic and add this picture after.  Whatever picture is your first on profile is used whenever you post.  Of course... we don't mind the picture if you don't mind... because I am sure many would agree... it is a nice ass...

You can select an avatar from the avi library and use it, while maintaining this pic as your main profile photo.  I, for one, don't mind your booty as your avi.  *perv*

Thank You Calla Firestorm I don't think I could have said it better myself.  For those that do wish to participate in this form of activity all I ask is that you please take the time to read the following article  http://members.aol.com/Oldrope/breath.htm  and if after reading it you still feel inclined to do so then please think of those non consenting people in your life.  To me breath play is like playing Russian roulette.  You may get lucky for a few time but there is no second chance after you are unlucky just once.

doubleflash -> RE: breathplay (7/20/2008 12:32:16 PM)

As a paramedic, I responded to way too many "erotic accidential asphyxia" incidents.  Most were fatal.  A few patients managed to hang on long enough to become vegatables.  Even fewer recovered, sort of.  They tended to drool a lot.

Breath play can kill in a number of ways, ranging from suffocation to cardiac arrythmias.  Medical literature is full of sad case studies.  The message is simple: Play with this stuff long enough and you will either do irreversable damage or kill somebody.  That's your call.

dragon2760 -> RE: breathplay (7/20/2008 12:42:41 PM)

Oh and one other thing for the person controlling the breath of another to consider is that if any of the things that doubleflash mentioned do happen, no amount of claiming that it was accidental or that you were just playing, can or will keep you from going to jail possibly for a very long time.

Lockit -> RE: breathplay (7/20/2008 12:46:34 PM)

The thing is, you may hear about the one's that died, but you rarely hear about the one's that lived.  Try getting that story out... I have and it just doesn't get the interest that a death does.  If you don't believe all these post and what has been said, try going to a hospital and asking them about the patient's up in intensive rehab and what the future looks like for those that lived.

Or... come to my house.  We are actually lucky.  He looks normal.  Till he smacks himself in the head, laughing or doesn't know what to do when his pants fall down or something is about to hit him and he only watches it do so.  He does know when he is hungry, but doesn't know how to get something to eat.  He can think and talk, but won't because he knows his thinking is in his mind... the likes of an idiot.  He is about five, although he is twenty-four.  That ought to be cute by the age of fifty.

Whether it comes by way of pleasure or life escape... the effects of anoxic brain injury are the same... life long or deadly.  Shall we see who the next idiot is... which card do you pick... sadly... it might be the joker.

BKSir -> RE: breathplay (7/20/2008 1:08:33 PM)

I agree that you have your right to your fetish, to breath play if that happens to be it.  Face it, we're all freaks here in our own ways.  But they all make very good points on why not to do it.  I'm personally against it as well.  I've tried it, it is quite a rush, I won't deny that.  But for me, it wasn't worth the risks involved.

That being said, I'm surprised that no one mentioned, IF you're going to do so, it would be a very very wise idea to take first aid and cpr courses, and require the same from the ones you're going to be engaging in this practice with.  Also, have your phone/cell phone RIGHT THERE at all times, within arms reach, know exactly where it is.

No, even then, it's not safe, you can't let your guard down in this for a second.  But, with being prepared for circumstances in these ways, is always good.  It's better to have the minor safety nets like that and not need them, than it is to need them and not have them.

Please, be careful.

So what your are saying is breath play alone is more responsible than breath play with a partner?

Jnj -> RE: breathplay (7/20/2008 1:57:40 PM)

Hi Asphyxialover,

You haven't gotten very many responses that are supportive of your fetish, and that is a shame, because scaring people off it is similar to the theory that not providing condoms to teenagers will stop them from having sex.

I am a breath player as well, and although I switch occasionally, I am usually the one being choked or suffocated.  I love it -- I love the high it gives me, I find it peaceful, I find it creates an amazing connection and intimacy with my primary partner.

I'm also aware of the risk -- I don't believe there is a safe way to do breath play because death is a possibility every single time you engage in it with very little outward signs of distress. I believe there are ways to do it that minimize your risk of minor accidents, such as petichials and dislocated jaws.  I think if this is something you want to do, you should seek out a class on it -- many major conventions and even some brave small groups offer presentations on this topic, and it is a great place to start.

You should also purchase a book on anatmony -- there is a great one called The Anatomy Coloring Book that you can find for about $15 on Amazon.  Because breath play and choking effect not only the cardiovascular system and respitory system, but also the nervous system, it is important to have a good understanding of where all the important parts sit.  I also recommend that you and your partner take classes in CPR, but do so with the understanding that it will not greatly improve your partner's  chances of survival is somewhere around 30% when witnessed by a medical professional.

Hope this helps...feel free to contact me on the other side with breathplay related questions.

LATEXBABY64 -> RE: breathplay (7/20/2008 2:25:42 PM)

what i am saying is be a responsible person  be acountable   thats all that needs to be said
if you do something tht kills someone even in play you goto yail

mmsprecious -> RE: breathplay (7/20/2008 3:29:07 PM)

what happens if you play with just the dom and the sub...the dom ties up the sub and puts the bag on the sub and then....what if the TOP has a heart attack and collapses? i know it's a rare thing, but...

i am an EMT, my Master is an EMT. we are programmed to save lives, not come close to taking them. this is one kink we do not engage in. i will play with needles, blades, other forms of what some would consider "edge" play, but not breath...not life.

i HAVE held my own breath during an orgasm that was approaching and riding thru it...i almost passed out and it was an immense orgasm. so i DO understand the attraction, but...
not willing to go there. don't blame people for doing it, but don't understand it at all.
i like life too much.

Master Mike's precious

InsaenPleasures -> RE: breathplay (7/20/2008 7:36:55 PM)

I do not think it is possible to have an intelligent discussion about Breath Play.  It is difficult for many people to understand why someone would want to put themselves and or someone else at risk with something that has so little reward. Yet in our own and other cultures people do that everyday in other non-BDSM ways and it is considered acceptable. Just as it is (or was) actually safer to fly, people are more scared of flying because plain crashes are so spectacular. A Skydiver hitting the ground because his chute did not open is unfornate; a girl dying of asphyxia is a national referendum on sexuality and the limits of Human exploration.

Any BDSM activity, when performed without care CAN BE DANGEROUS. Flogging, bondage, and yes breath play. Be as prepared as possible when you play and the chances of anyone getting hurt go way down.  Do try and consider the circumstances but it is your right as a Human to explore, just do so with some sense.
