I always found that something repetitive and boring, like playing computer solitare, worked to put me out. But I would wake myself up getting from the computer to bed (or closing down the laptop). So, I got a PDA with solitare on it and play that every night. Otherwise, my mind races and lists, and goes over converations I had, and replays worries, and thinks of things that happened years ago, and worries I forgot to do something before bed, and....and.... and....well, you know.

These all work for me - pick your poison:
  • Sex (with climax) or in its absence, masturbation.
  • Hot bath (uncomfortably hot) for about 10 minutes, followed by a cool to chilly soak for less than 5 minutes, then a cup of warm milk with Bailey's (last part optional but pleasant). 
  • Exhaustion, so you just pass out whenever you close your eyes (not recommended exactly, but it definitely works).

       Another tip of the hat to getting yourself off.

       If your brain won't stop working, give it a task to visualize and focus on.  Counting sheep is the classic example, but anything like that works.  Visualize a completely mundane, boring task you can do without any thought.  Break it down, and spend as much time mentally on each step as it would take you physically do it.  Cleaning the bathroom, vacuuming the house, changing the oil in a car.  Personally, I will use setting forms for a concrete job, but it should be some routine task you know very well, and do with no enthusiasm.

      Works pretty well.

I decided that being awake until the sun comes up is my normal biological cycle and try to schedule around that.

Take some magnesium about one hour before bedtime. Start with 250 mg, go up to 450 or 500 if need be. Consult a doctor (which I am not) if you have seriously impaired kidneys, beforehand.

i've not read all the posts, so bear with me if this is repitition.
i went through a period of little sleep or waking from a a star blinking and my mind would race again.
so went to my GP and he offered to loan me book from his medical days .. 'the parts of the eye'.  Never failed to send him to sleep.
basically read something that's a little technical - i'm studying at the moment so i open a text book, and i'm off ...

other things are try to go to bed at close to the same time each night, ensure you've eaten at least an hour or more before retiring, have a ritual,
(my nan used to say it's time to get into your piggy jimjams, clean you toothypegs and go sleepy bo bos) ... is the bedroom well ventilated, the bed comfortable, good pillows, bed linen reasonably clean are you warm/cool enough, music is good too.  Go for awalk after dinner, take time to smell the roses, avoid stimulants, not just tea/coffee/coke, etc but the TV/DVD ...

a friend of mine writes everything he thinks of on a mental blackboard and wipes it clean, mentally and it works for him to keep his mind clear as he goes to sleep ... it doesn't work for me ...

Rescue Remedy Sleep!  it's a homeopathic remedy and non-habit forming.  it helps stop your mind from racing around those same thoughts that keep you awake.

Yup, Melatonin works great.
It's a naturally occurring substance that many people lack enough of for whatever reason.
I buy it at Costco $8 for a bottle of 300 and take two an hour before bedtime.
One of my Coast Guard buddie's wife who is a Nurse Practitioner told me about it, she gives it to her daughter.
It makes me drowsey and I'm usually asleep 10 minutes after I hit the mattress.
Another thing I used to do is to count and concentrate on your exhalations. That works pretty good too.
And another thing that always seemed to work but it took about 5-10 minutes and was basically self hypnosis was to lie on your back and relax as much as you can.
Then imagine an orange sun like object starting at your left foot revolving very slowly from your left foot up to your left hip cleansing and relaxing your whole leg as it turns in a circle above.
Then shift it to your right leg, then your arms and body and head.
I could never get past my arms and legs before I was sound asleep!
This works when all other methods fail.
It's the power of the mind being harnessed.

Or, like Bipolarber suggested you could listen to Barak Obama's monotone monotonous voice while he makes promises to everyone that he'll never be able to keep.

Yeah Melatonin is a godsend. I tend to use it pretty frequently, though I do go off it fairly often to minimize addiction potential. My insomnia really isn't stress related. It's just how I've always been. Though recently I've found myself sleeping for 2-3 hours at a clip if at all, which is a moderately unusual change in my normal pattern or lack thereof.

As a side note I've never found any kind of sexual activity to be particularly sleep promoting. I usually get more keyed up, making me not even consider wanting to sleep.

I agree Melatonin works great .. I got a bottle at walmart I think there are 300 tablets for $2.00 and they rock my socks... They don't make me feel drugged when I get up the next morning. And I sleep like a rock... Since I work nights and I have three days off I find it hard sometimes to be able to go to sleep like a normal person... and not keep my vampire hours. LOL ... so my siter told me to take Melatonin... and it works wonders. I take it about 10 minuets before I want to go to bed, and within that time when I crawl in bed I get the warm fuzzies and am out like a light!!

  I know its been said here in different posts but just wanted to add my two cents.

Reading and a very hot bath. I know you said no pills but I take Benadryl to help me sleep and it works wonders. It's also non-habit forming. If you do decide to try it, I would start off with one tablet (25mg) because some people that works fine for, I always take two though.

Thanks for all the suggestions, you guys have given me a lot of new ideas- I'm going to pick up some melatonin today at the drug store.

I'm with BrokenSaint- I'd hate to let down the people that really wanted me to masturbate, but orgasms always energize me. :)
