popeye1250 -> Watermellon!!! (7/21/2008 5:05:33 PM)

I'm not from the South but I LOVE seeing pick-up trucks full of Wteermellon!
One of the great pleasures of summertime!
When I was growing up in (Woburn, Mass) nine miles North of Boston once in a while my  father who was a Firefighter he would bring a Watermellon home in the summer and it was better than  anything  (because we didn't have a/c o0r fans even ) but it would "cool us down and it did! (We was poor and we did't have nothin') and I could remember us "spittin' the seeds!"
It's very funny, some of the simplest "things are the funniest" things " in your life.
I'll tell you what, WATERMELLOMS are are a GREAT MEMMORY!!!

popeye - you'll like this..... i don't have the source but there was a news clip late last week about how : watermellons are considered an aphrodesiac..... start wolfing them down folks !

Vendaval -> RE: Watermellon!!! (7/21/2008 5:24:46 PM)

I love chilled melon in the summertime.  Melons are also good in fruit smoothies and mixed drinks.  Some of my family puts salt on their portions but that seems like contradictory tastes.  (Maybe it is a Mid West or Southern tradition to put salt on watermelon and black pepper on cantaloupe.)

(edited for silly spelling mistakes)

windchymes -> RE: Watermellon!!! (7/21/2008 5:49:30 PM)

Both my kids were late summer babies and I was huge and miserable and craving watermelon!  I'd eat two a week, easily.

Must be a good crop this year, because they seem really cheap this year.

Anybody ever spike a watermelon?  And I don't mean like a football!

camille65 -> RE: Watermellon!!! (7/21/2008 6:06:24 PM)

We used to spike them in high school. Heh now that is a memory! A watermelon spiked with everclear, a bunch of us laying on our bellies and sucking on it with straws. All out in the sunshine, getting buzzed and listening to music.

Thanks popeye, that gave me a smile.

I could live on watermelon and canteloupe this time of the year. And my ex used to swear that he could tell it was watermelon season by how I tasted. Apparently it makes your nether regions REALLY sweet!

hizgeorgiapeach -> RE: Watermellon!!! (7/21/2008 6:35:52 PM)

Popeye - if you ever make it out to this part of the country during the Summer - let me know.  There's an absolutely FANTASTIC watermelon Festival held every year in June about 45 minutes south of where I live.  Literally some of the Best  Black Diamond watermelons you'll ever taste.

Huge watermelon, split in half lengthwise, a bit of salt sprinkled sparingly over the center where the Heartmeat is - OMG it's enough to make me drool and slobber just Thinking about it, even though it's something that I routinely indulge in during the summer.  Cantaloup (or more appropriately MuskMelon - since actual cantaloup aren't to be found in the US except a few places - there's a bit of trivia that I bet not many know)  split, deseeded, cut in half and then the halves sectioned, served ice cold from the fridge with just a bit of salt on 'em.  Yuuuuuuummmmmmmm.

(btw, Wind - yes, the watermelon crop has been especially good this year out in this area at least - finally out of the drought, and not having the swamping rains that we had all of last summer that damn near destroyed any harvest that we might otherwise have had!)

I LOVE watermelon!

love it, love it, love it!

I am jealous that you are able to see pick-up trucks full of watermelon!
Popeye, when I see you in heaven, I am going to let you sit next to me and

let our submissive's feed us  watermelon.

Here we have Howell melons which are a special canteloupe hybrid that you can only find here. They were originally grown in Howell, MI but they have become so popular (they even have a huge festival in honor of them, complete with melon ice cream!) they are now grown all over the surrounding area. They are the BEST!!!

(Is popeye blottoed? I think we should be told.)

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Watermellon!!! (7/21/2008 7:13:55 PM)

Hey Popeye, we have a huge watermelon festival down in Hope every year.

http://www.hopemelonfest.com/festival.htm

Before Billy boy became President, that's all Hope was known for.  They grow some damn good melons down there.  You can't drive on the highways around here without seeing some guy selling melons and other produce out of the back of a truck on the side of the road during the summers.

You ever spiked a watermelon with a bottle of vodka?  LOL.  That's what I remember about watermelons from my teenage years.  We'd get a melon, cut a plug out of it, and empty a liter of vodka into it.  You put it up on a picnic table next to the kegs....PARTY!

kittinSol -> RE: Watermellon!!! (7/21/2008 7:19:19 PM)

Melon au Porto .

To die for.

What a fun thread.  [:)]

When we were kids we'd snack on watermellon and then store watermellon seeds in our cheeks and bombfire them at each other.  Heh.  And when we grew older we learned that injecting them with Vodka was fun.  There's something about a big, juicey watermellon that makes ya happy.

brightspot -> RE: Watermellon!!! (7/22/2008 12:24:25 AM)

Watermelon is one of my most favorite!

I remember spitting the seeds too, but I really am digging the seedless

ones!

Watermelon...Thank You, Mother Nature!

Missy.
