I tend to agree but I am also biased because I am a teacher. I also believe it is one of the most underpaid professions out there.

According to Richard Vedder, of the University of Ohio, who calculated teacher wages:  "Weekly pay for teachers in 2001 was about the same (within 10 percent) as for accountants, biological and life scientists, registered nurses, and editors and reporters, while teachers earned significantly more than social workers and artists.”

Vedder also calculated hourly wages, based on self-reported data compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In this case, “Teachers earned more per hour than architects, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, statisticians, biological and life scientists, atmospheric and space scientists, registered nurses, physical therapists, university-level foreign-language teachers, librarians, technical writers, musicians, artists, and editors and reporters.”

So it would seem that most teachers aren’t quite as “underpaid” as they claim to be, they are also likely to be poorly qualified.

Frederick Hess of the American Enterprise Institute is quoted, saying “Undergraduate education majors typically have lower SAT and ACT scores than other students.” “The lower the quality of the undergraduate institution a person attends, the more likely he or she is to wind up in the teaching profession,” he notes.

Underpaid?  Let’ see, $80-120k with 3 months off.  They aren’t rich but they sure aren’t starving either.  You gotta’ love that 3 months off… it’s like a planet full of pervs on the loose.  I wanna make a movie called “Teacher’s Gone Wild.”  God bless the teachers, especially the ones I dated.  I think teachers, like many intellectuals are just total pervs.

I think teachers should be on trading cards... with stats and the works.. Start a national profit sharing program, and bring in the salary cap, which will allow schools to bid on the best of the best.

I am all for making teachering into a well paid (rock star level) profession, as long as it is based on results.  There was a report a few years back in the Chicago Sun Times about a large number of the teachers not being able to pass the basics of a GED test.  I will look for the link.

OH I am also for giving the teachers whatever tools they need to teach and enforce the rules of their classrooms.  Bring back the metal lined oaken yard sticks....

excuse me???? $80 - 120K????? I'm married to a high school teacher who has a degree and 18 years experience and he don't earn anywhere that much.  as for the 3 months off - teachers are paid based on the number of hours they teach in a year.  some places allow the teachers to take that money as they earn it - or spread it out over the entire 12 months.  check yours facts a little better people

I have been teaching since '94 and I don't make near that, I probably never will because of the sector I work in. I don't work in "public schools" and even then not all teachers make that. Your also forgetting those that teach but work as substitutes, or kindergarten teachers (who are not all f/t), or paraprofessionals, or pre-k teachers, or how about those just starting out.Salary also depends on location (ie county, city, state, even the particular school).

Nor can every teacher afford to take a 3 month vacation as you put it and not every school takes the traditional summer vacations in fact the majority of schools that I am familiar with are year round.

To assume that EVERY teacher makes $80 plus a year is a huge assumption and we all know about when people start making assumptions.

Edited to add: It always amazes me how someone can read 1 article and assume they know everything about a profession even what people make and make such across the board freak'n generalizations.

I've known my share of teachers, and from a quick google of stats from several sources, average teaching income is 37-80k. I also know that those teachers I know, starting out, and for quite a while after (far longer, than say, the IT industry) either teach through the summer, or don't, in fact, have the summer off, as they need to pick up another job. Our teachers deserve more than what I was making 2 years out of HS with no degree, and having nothing to do with shaping the future of our children's lives (unless of course, you count working on a few porn sites as productive for their futures, i mean every little perv needs to be able to find porn somewhere, right).
Hell, the CPS has their salary numbers published here: http://www.cps-humanresources.org/careers/salary.htm with PHDs maxing out at 61,539.
So, yes, I'd say underpaid more than says it.

RS..up here the three months is a bit of a fantasy. Teachers work an average of two weeks after the kids are out for the summer and begin two weeks before the lil darlins go back.

Here the teachers only work if they're super involved... My best friend's mom is a 7th grade math teacher... She does nada during the summer...

My old high school music director just got back from region choir camps (competition trainings) and is going to miss my birthday party 'cause he has to go to Austin for some kind of music teachers' convention.

Just my 0.02

Plus there are often summer workshops they have or are encouraged to attend. This does not include any teacher involved in say sports. My football coach never had a day off. He was a gym teacher and when that was over he spent every day of his summer with us in the summer weight room program.

Then there are schools that double as day care and so they do not get summer vacation because many of the kids come to the school for summer care.  Not to mention it is harder for teachers to take off during the school year, at least according to the ones I know.

The money's not important - if you want lots of it go be an investment wanker on Wall Street. What counts is do you have a rewarding job? And money is only a part of that.

Bad teachers? I hate them. With a deep and enduring vitriolic hatred. You are fucking up the society in which I live, spoiling the minds of future citizens, creating enduring misconceptions, wasting children's wonderful opportunities. Get out of our gene pool - antiquis temporibus, nati tibi similes in rupibus ventosissimis exponebantur ad necem. Go man a banking help desk, where we expect you to be stupid and misleading and to guide us down the wrong path.

Good teachers? More precious than fine gold. They are that which shapes our future, they create small dynamos of worthwhile little humans. They open minds; then they pop in an enticing mix of interest and wonder and show children how much fun (and how important) it can be to fill up the rest themselves. Those I was fortunate enough to know have changed my life. They should be valued and respected above all others.

And it pisses me off that there are far more bad than good; we get the society we deserve when we allow this to happen.

Think how wonderful would be the world of bdsm if good subs taught well the open-minded doms; if wise doms taught the nascent subs with care and intelligence.

Anyone can teach anyone stuff - to do it well and to teach the right matter - sheesh but that's a toughie.

wow - they must pay big where you live but here in Chicago, teachers in CPS system are nowhere getting that unless they're a principal.

3 months off for summer? not any more. some schools are year-around (3months and 1month off) or charter schools (summer vacation only lasts 2months). summer school and/or summer programs are running in many of the schools. teachers are lucky to get a 1 month break before Sept.

Sundown, they must have shit in your cheerios, but I can't disagree.

Teaching is like any other profession in some ways, the yardsticks and methods of measuring performance are quite flawed. You can go to school and learn to teach. Some basic people skills and a degree in something. Whatever. Then you are able to follow the set currticulum and basically do the job. All fine and good.

But there are some who excel, impel the students to greatness, in fact inspire. When you find one of those, don't insult them by calling them gold. Gold is as good as shit when compared to some of them. Others just go with the flow, but they get the job done for the most part. Following the curriculum is not all that hard. It is a useful service and deserves a decent wage. Of course there are probably some who are incompetent, but name one profession in which that is not true.

But then there are those who really take the job to heart. The best way I can describe it at the moment is that they respect human curiousity, and people's desire to learn, that is when they have the desire to learn.

Money aside, I think good teachers should be rewarded with good students. There is no doubt the in some inner city public schools some of them are not much more than glorified babysitters. I have given up greed, so I think a bit differently. Screw the money, if you make enough to live comfortably that is what matters. Getting rich is simply not the main goal.

And there are proffesionals in other fields who are the same. Their goal is not the paycheck. They could be anyone, but their goal is to do a good job. When you find those people, PAY them. That is the fundamental difference. You can teach by just passing out book and issuing instructions. But of course that does nothing to inspire. Instilling knowledge is like building a fire.

There are the good, bad and ugly in every profession (except politics which seems to lack the good category).

T

I am trying to be an elementary or high school teacher.  I have worked as a substitute teacher and some days are not so easy.  What I find rewarding is that I try to help students learn and I also like to have active student participation, rather than lecture all day.

I guess I take those experiences with me as a student, being that I was an Air Force brat, traveled around the country and that my educational background was very sporadic.

At the end of the school, if I can get several students to do a high-five clap or one student who hugs me as I say good-bye, then I know I am doing something right!
