Wow there are some great ideas here for reading.  I have a six month old at home so my reading has been basically

GoodNight Moon  (it is so thrilling, who will they say goodnight to next)

Winne the Pooh (OMG he eat all the honey)

Dumbo (Elephants really can fly)

Colors (who knew there where so many)

Numbers (all the way to TEN!!!)

....all the suggestions cited are good, but as a change of pace i'd suggest Plato's Republic......if only to see just how much 5th century Athens has influenced modern life.
Failing that, how about anything by Charles Dickens, Mark Twain or Oscar Wilde.......

GreedyTop -> RE: Summer reading list ... any suggestions (7/23/2008 11:36:21 AM)

George Orwell - A collection of essays (Shooting an elephant was INTENSE)
Barbara Ehrenriech - Nickle and Dimed: on (not) getting by in America (a great view into reality of the majority of Americans lives)

How  could I forget The Red Tent and The Poisonwood Bible?  Two of my faves.

CarrieO -> RE: Summer reading list ... any suggestions (7/24/2008 5:20:54 AM)

oh wow....i can't believe i missed this thread.
here's a list of some of the books i've been reading lately.....

"The Taste of Place" by Amy Trubek. a discussion on the concept of terroir in relation to food/taste and where your food comes from.

"In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan.  a book about escaping the western diet and re-learning which foods are healthy and how to return food to it's proper context.
(if you can't tell....i'm a bit of a foodie!  and yes, i do read cookbooks.)

"Farewell My Subaru" by Doug Fine.  yuppie moves to New Mexico to "live off the land" and learns it's not always as easy as what they say in books!  good read.....and in between the humor you find some real thought-provoking ideas.

"The Second Journey...The Road Back to Yourself" by Joan Anderson.  life for a woman, part two.

"French Tryst...secrets of a Courtesan" by Kirsten Lobe.  chick-lit fluff.....but hey, sometimes we all need to take a break from the serious!

"Song of Kali" by Dan Simmons.  fantasy meets horror meets hinduism and it will scare the crap out of you!

"Three Short Novels" by Colette.  classics....Gigi, Julie de Carneilhan and Chance Acquaintances.

"Stick Out Your Tongue" by Ma Jian.  "a revelation: a startlingly vivid portrait of Tibet, both enchanting and horrifying, beautiful and violent, seductive and perverse."  beautiful and haunting, i would add.

enjoy your summer......and btw, Moby Dick was one of my least favorite books ever!

peace....
carrie

Thank you for mentioning these!  I loved The Red Tent ... not so fond of the other, but I know other people who have loved it.

Isn't it amazing how many 'classics' are out there that seem to be almost unreadable?  lol  I agree about Moby Dick. I picked up The Scarlett Letter awhile back to re-read in the winter, and wow .. impossible.  lol

Leepus -> RE: Summer reading list ... any suggestions (7/24/2008 7:30:24 AM)

Great, now the stack of about 10 books I had setup to read, now that I have time, will be expanding.
[edited for clarity and my own pedantics]

slvemike4u -> RE: Summer reading list ... any suggestions (7/24/2008 7:55:06 AM)

Harper Lee's to Kill A Mockingbird should be required reading for anyone.
Forest Church's So Help Me God...The founding Fathers..and The First Great Battle Over Church And State...was illumunating
President Lincoln ...the Duty Of A Statesman by William Lee Miller
Thomas Fleming's The Perils of Peace ...America's Struggle For Survival After Yorktown ....was also a great read.
