After paying $35.00 for a carton of cigarettes today, I am seriously considering rolling my own cigarettes. I know I could buy cheaper cigarettes, but I hate them. I know I could quit, but I'm not going to right now. I've looked into getting one of those cigarette machines that fill the tubes up, but that seems like a pain in the ass. You have to buy the machine, and you have to buy the tubes when you run out. I'm leaning more toward hand rolling them, and using a cigarette holder type filter. Any smokers have opinions about the best methods?

Used to roll my own. don't smoke today(thank the gods) As far as what method is best.......you can buy really nice quality tobacco from cigar and pipe shops by the pound. I used to buy it myself and it was quite tasty(I liked Danish shag) Later I just simply bought "Top" brand tabacco and rolled em with that, it was the absolute cheapest and wasn't harsh(actually I liked the flavor and still love the smell). I saved a lot of coin though rolling my own. My fave method was a zig zag plastic roller and no filter. They came out nice, smoked well etc.

when i was a kid, i'd roll cigarettes for my dad and overlook the progress of the homemade wine lol. it's not hard, it doesn't take a lot of time, i'm sure it would be worth your time to do it.

Oh I know how to roll 'em Christine. I just haven't done it consistently in a long time. Manufactured cigarettes are a convenience for me. I have just been looking over my budget, and 35 bucks every week for cigarettes is something I need to reconsider. I allow myself so much money every month for frivolities, which include cigarettes, alcohol, eating out, and entertainment. Cigarettes take up a huge chunk of that money. At this moment in time, I don't want to quit. So I am exploring other options.

Isn't rolling tobacco a hell of a lot less bad for you than cigarettes? I thought it lacked all of the nasty four hundred or so chemicals that are present in cancersticks. There's your motivating answer :-) .

I've heard that Kittin. Actually I smoke Winstons, which don't have additives. It's 100% tobacco. I could buy a cheaper brand, but they are just nasty. The roll your own tobaccos are supposed to be additive free, and they are significantly cheaper. A 6 ounce can of tobacco sells for around $15.00. But unless you buy the machines that stuff pre-made tubes, you smoke a cigarette that is filterless. So I dont know if that's any better.

Not sure if you smoke menthols or not, but depending on what your tastes are, you may want to buy 2 brands of tobacco to blend to get as close to the taste you want. The tubes and machines are nice, especially once you get a little practice. Buying the box of tubes is the same as buying a carton, same number of tubes, just alot cheaper. It costs us about $13 a week for tubes and tobacco. With hand rolling you still have to buy more papers, and rolling takes more time than the machine. There are even the cheap little machines you can get with one of those quick roll kits, just in case you don't like it. In the end it will come down to what flavor you enjoy, and how much you plan on smoking. Edited to add: just saw your last post... I would also add take a look to see if you have a tobacco shop in the area, they will have different grades of tobacco, that come in resealable bags, and prices are usually a bit better.

I have been rolling my own cigarettes for about 3 years now. My former brand of cigarettes sells for about $50 a carton here....single packs nearly $6. I can roll a carton of higher quality cigarettes for less than $10. We now have tobacco shops everywhere here and rolling your own has become quite popular. I buy good quality tobacco and pre-made tubes. You may have to try a few different types to find one you like. I bought a machine that stuffs the tubes for about $24. It is a bit tricky to get the rolling down right at first but now I can roll a pack in less than 10 minutes. The taste was a bit different but within a week I was used to it. The tobacco I buy is additive free. I would recommend staying away from that canned stuff...I found it to be poor quality and as you said....nasty. I don't know what the medical community says as far as if they are healthier, but I can tell you that since I switched I no longer have a smokers cough, I no longer get up in the morning with a tightness in my chest. On the very rare occasion that I buy a pack of pre-made cigarettes when I run out and I'm away somewhere...within half a pack my throat is raw. I generally put them out after a few puffs because they taste like chemicals and are very harsh. I have also found that rolling my own makes me very conscious of the number of cigarettes I smoke and has resulted in my cutting back significantly. I also don't roll a large quantity ahead of time and when I am at home I roll one when I want one. I do not smoke inside my home either so all of those things combined have helped me to have many days that I smoke only just a few.

Slaveboy, you can buy filters for roll ups, either standard or slimline. You just balance the filter on the end of the paper and roll as normal. But you need a technique first - which is basically your index fingers and thumbs. You can actually buy cigarette rolling machines which are good for a start.. Besides filters still let a lot of the gunk through. The finer the cut of the tobacco the better the quality. I'm not too sure what is sold in the States, and I'd be incredibly surprised if you cannot find decent rolling tobacco. Most people I know smoke the Dutch halfware shag such as Samson, Drum or the virginia tobaccos such as Golden Virginia, Old Holborn etc. If you ever get tobacco that's dried out it's best to keep a small sliver of potato or orange peel in the tin, from which the tobacco will regain its moisture.

Thadius and Mistoferin, thank you. Y'all answered my question. We do have quite a few tobacco shops around here, and I was just wondering if it was worth the money to invest in one of those machines. I haven't hand rolled a cigarette in a long time. I noticed that Bugler sells for about 15 bucks a can, and it comes with papers. So I reckoned that it might be a good fit. But I know it would be stronger than I'm used too. Filterless cigarettes also stain your fingers more so. I just wondered how much of an inconvenience it was sitting there rolling a pack of cigarettes would be with those tubes. I've never done it, so I don't know. The next time I have to go to the tobacco store, I am going to buy the cheaper machine and try it out.

The people at the shop will likely be more than happy to give you a few instructions and let you try out a couple of different types of tobacco while you are there. Bugler is just....ewwwwwww.

Yeah Stella, I know what you're talking about. But I thought that would be an inconvience too. You have to buy longer papers than are provided with brands that provide papers, and you have to buy the little hand rolling machines. I don't know if I could hand roll a cigarette with a filter. It took me forever to learn how to roll a cigarette.

Punishing big tobacco with the highest profits they've ever made. Boy, if somebody would punish me like that, I'd rethink my whole attitude about punishment. I don't understand your problem with buying an injector machine and pre-rolled tubes. The machines are cheap, $10 or less and last practically forever. Yes, you have to buy the tubes when you run out. But you'd have to buy the papers when you run out if you don't use the tubes, and you have to buy the tobacco when you run out as well. Once you figure out how many tubes you need per container of tobacco, you can get all you need at one stop. Also, using the cigarette holder type filter won't save you from having to buy filters. Those things get nasty quickly. Here in Arizona, all but the skankiest factory made cigarettes cost over $5.00 per pack, or $50 per carton. A 1lb. bag of decent tobacco costs $20 and a box of 200 tubes cost about $1.70, due to a recent price war. A 1lb. bag of tobacco will make about 25 packs. So, around a buck a pack.

The filter tubes and the machines are definitely worth it. The small 5$ machines at least. Occasionally part of them breaks, though it's not all that common, and replacements are cheap. Getting the tubes isn't really all that much of a pain, and you can always just grab a bunch.

I've heard of people growing thier own tobacco to aviod paying the "sin taxes" imposed by state and federal government. It's not illegal unless you try to sell it. While I do not support smoking, I do support an individual's rights to avoid repression by government. http://www.ryomagazine.com/july/review.htm

I rolled my own once upon a time and it doesn't take too long to learn, even to make them with a filter in. They sell packs of filters here - normal or menthol. You'll find roll-ups higher in tar than Winston but paradoxically, easier on your throat. Just a thought, if you're considering such a radical change anyway, why not give up?

Yes You Can!!! When I was younger I grew my own chosen plant to smoke. You would be amazed what you can grow in a closet with the correct lighting.
