Thadius -> A little green in the face? (7/22/2008 7:35:51 PM)

http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20080721/pl_politico/11935

quote:

In a memo to reporters, described as “a few guidelines we sent staff before departure to the Middle East,” Obama advance staffer Peter Newell laid out rules on attire for Jordan and Israel.
First among them: “Do not wear green.”

The reason for banning green on the trip was stated as "It's a Hamas color".

quote:

A spokesman for the Council on American Islamic Relations, Ibrahim Hooper, said Muslims might take offense at the campaign’s instruction.
“Are you kidding?” Hooper asked, when told of the memo, calling the move a “misstep.”
“The color green is associated with Islam worldwide,” he said. “Whether in some particularly tiny geographic location there’s some other local association based on politics is one thing, but to ask people not to wear green – are they going to ask people if he goes to Ireland, are they going to ask them not to wear green or orange?”

Just another one of those little missteps that probably will not see any coverage on the "mainstream" news programs.  It is good to see that Obama's advisors are educating him on the things going on overseas.  I know it's not that big a deal, but it shows what kind of intelligence is being taken under advisement when making policies.  What do the rest of you think?

Green with envy,
Thadius

I think it makes diplomatic sense to be careful about such details. Flags mean a lot to many people (unfortunately, in my opinion).

Alumbrado -> RE: A little green in the face? (7/22/2008 7:45:09 PM)

I think anyone going overseas in such circumstances gets a big old wad of 'briefing' material...'don't cross your legs', 'don't use your left hand for anything', 'don't show any family pictures'...each one successively more over cautious than the last, until the point of nonsense is reached.

kittinSol -> RE: A little green in the face? (7/22/2008 7:50:59 PM)

Exactly: why it makes the news at all is pretty illuminating. Anything to try and portray the opposition in a bad light. "No green: what a loosah!". "He wore a green tie: how ignorant of him!".

Obama's up to public scrutiny, so this kind of thing isn't altogether surprising, but still... surely, there are more important things to discuss.

Owner59 -> RE: A little green in the face? (7/22/2008 7:57:37 PM)

No ,you`re right,it isn`t a big deal.

But at least we have you around, to fill us in on all the minutiae that we might otherwise miss.

Check out my new sig line.....

quote:

Many Middle Easterners are puzzled by this fact, and some even, angered.  “Why didn’t he also ban the use of yellow, which is Hezbollah’s color".

quote:

Richard Bulliet, a professor of Middle Eastern History at the Columbian University, says that green is the symbol of the Prophet Muhammed's household, and thus a symbol of Islam worldwide.  He also states that this is a way for Obama to falsify the rumors that say he is of a Muslim Background.

Oh and let's not forget other bans that Obama has had on his rock tour... like this very interesting one in Germany.

Why is it a big deal?  The same reason that a simple misstatement by John McCain is a big deal...

kittinSol -> RE: A little green in the face? (7/22/2008 8:06:14 PM)

I think the big deal isn't down to those tiny details, but it's great to have people to scrutinize the forest for the trees :-).

DarkSteven -> RE: A little green in the face? (7/22/2008 8:06:50 PM)

Makes sense to me.  If an eminent Arab comes to this country, I expect him to learn how to conduct himself without causing offense due to cultural differences.  I expect that we should do the same.

When in Rome...

Typical Obama - after Bush, Obama just needs to avoid punching anyone out to be viewed as an improvement, but his team does their homework, and does it well.  He knows he's under a microscope, and cannot afford a slipup.

kittinSol -> RE: A little green in the face? (7/22/2008 8:15:36 PM)

Shalom.

Thadius -> RE: A little green in the face? (7/22/2008 8:15:39 PM)

Does their homework?  Blaming the ban on it being the color of Hamas, is not doing one's homework...  With that little statement they are basicly saying that all of Islam are members of Hamas because GREEN is the color of ISLAM.

Owner59 -> RE: A little green in the face? (7/22/2008 8:16:09 PM)

"A simple misstatement"......

Poor John,so put upon.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Maybe it`s the never ending stream of mis-statements,"oh I forgot about that"s and all those "senior moments".
To bad Sen. McGramps didn`t have his Joe Lieberman there to correct him.
What`s he going to do when he`s toting the football?Joe can`t always be there for him.....
It's that you keep leaving without saying anything that stands behind your assertions that is the most memorable.[sm=rofl.gif]
What was the big deal then,about McCain standing in front of a green background in Louisiana recently?
Your conclusion about Obamas motivations over this is kinda creepy,to say the least.
Thadius -> RE: A little green in the face? (7/22/2008 8:36:17 PM)
And Barry the saint has never made a misstatement...
Let's see how about one about something he should be intimately aware of "himself"
Marking the anniversary of the March 1965 "Bloody Sunday" in Selma, Ala., Obama, speaking at a church, said his parents got together "because of what happened in Selma." Obama was born in 1961.
Or perhaps how he was seeing ghosts on Memorial Day...
http://www.stoptheaclu.com/archives/2008/05/27/obama-i-see-dead-people/
"On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes — and I see many of them in the audience here today — our sense of patriotism is particularly strong."
Oh and on to the wonderful understanding of the region...
quote:
http://www.mikefrancesa.com/wordpress/?p=878
Earlier this month in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Obama showed off his knowledge of the war in Afghanistan by honing in on a lack of translators: “We only have a certain number of them and if they are all in Iraq, then it’s harder for us to use them in Afghanistan.” The real reason it’s “harder for us to use them” in Afghanistan: Iraqis speak Arabic or Kurdish. The Afghanis speak Pashto, Farsi, or other non-Arabic languages.
I know the only person that makes mistakes is the old guy, because he is going senile, I wonder what Obama's problem is... perhaps it was that "experimenting with heavy drug and alcohol" during his younger days.
On the contrary, I'm highly amused at having put you two in the position of being strange bedfellows, simply by pointing out a few inconvenient facts.
Like fish in a barrel.... [:D]
In the end though, fish or not fish, we're all in the same boat. Fried.
