My mouse hangs. It often does not repond to clicks unless I knock it on the desk. So it is hard to activate buttons and to insert the cursor into text. When I activate a scroll bar the mouse stays connected when I leave that scroll bar, causing the page to move up and down when I move the mouse. It is an optical mouse on a wire. I am considering to buy a new mouse tomorrow as I cannot work in word with this porblem: accidents may inadvertently happen to the text I am writing. I had the same problem about one month ago, but then it went away. Now to see if I can get the ok button to function to post this.

If its a wireless mouse, check the base thingie, and check the batteries. If its the wired optical one, check to make sure theres no dust or nothing.

wow, this thread isn't what i was expecting from the title rofl! OP, mine does the same thing and i clean it and that makes the hanging go away.

Cleaning the mouse was a disaster. When I finally managed to open it, I rinsed it with water and let it dry, then assembled it again. The cursor did move, but the mouse did not respond to any clicks at all. So this morning I bought a new mouse for five euros. Umm, it did not have a usb plug, so it was useless. So I mounted my bicycle and rode to the center of the city and bought a mouse with the correct plug for eight euros. Two hours later I am now back home. The mouse does function, but the wire that it is on is at least twenty centimetres too short. I tried to plug it into a usb docking station, but that did not function at all. Well, I can work with it, but at the next opportunity I will buy another five euro mouse with the correct plug.

Why not? It was disconnected from the electricity and corrosion is not to be expected from a short rinse. I dried any water that I could see with some paper tissue and then let it dry for a couple of hours. That ought to be sufficient. There was not much dust anyway, so I do not know what the cause of the problem was.

OP, i've never taken mine apart, i just clean the bottom of it and make sure there isn't any debris below the doohicky red light thing and that does the trick.

if it's an older mouse, you can always check the mouse's balls; errrr, mouse ball

the other possibility is the mouse could have just been on it's last legs. i have amouse where the button is a bit worn and gets cranky, and the wheel has been abused. Mice are cheap. Though, I'm certain it shouldn't take 4 tries to get a new one that works properly with your computer. Next time, try stepping on it, it will realign all of the springs and sprockets and it should work fine.

rofl Leepus...my wheel wasn't working to scroll up and down again, i didn't dare step on it so i just pushed hard on it with my hands and moved it back and forth a few times...viola! it's working again....i'm so not mechanical. [8\|]

ugh! water??? good grief..... a swab dabbed with alcohol (rubbing not consumable) is more than sufficient. hope the hint helps next time you need to clean a mouse (the computer type, not the creature). [sm=ofcourse.gif]
