Good post, in fact very good. But I see no humor.

I have a hell of alot to say about it, but being the humor section I won't. Things like this burn me up, mainly because it's true.

Have a cigar, but you'll have to go to the Salt Flats in bumfuckt Utah to smoke it.

As I was reading this, I was thinking this should not be in the humor section.
What Termyn8or said!!!!!
Thanks for posting... many a truth is said in jest.

This is the exact reason we are home schooling are um! I think it is ok to laugh at it because we let it happen

It is sad and true ..... things have been taken way too far .... with ... I fear .. no way of turning them back ...

sirsholly -> RE: School 1960 vs School 2007 (very unPC) (7/24/2008 7:00:48 AM)

i agree with everyone that, while this is an awesome post, it does not belong in the humor section...

i agree that things are taken too far MissH...but imho there are ways to turn it around. One would be that parents would take back there roles as parents...

Is that anywhere near West Kinfuck Vermont?

i think it does belong in the humor section, at least until we get a "Must shoot self in head after realizing that the pussification of america is nearly complete.

Just to throw in some humor, i'll cut and past an old post of mine that is on a similar note.

i remember metal slides, where if you didn't get cut up on the way down you'd get burnt by the metal in the august sun

i remember going to Flat Rock park, where us kids (and a few adults) would go and slide down these rocks into a tiny little pool created under the ledge of some other rocks before streaming off further down hill... kids got scraped up and some broken bones slamming into that ledge after sliding at top speed down these rocks, and it was all OK; we'd learn the hard way and go back next summer when our bones healed

i remember city parks with actual rock in the playground and seeing who could jump the farthest from 15 foot high swings, sometimes accidentally going straight up (20-25 feet) and straight down

i remember leaping from a tired old rope (which was maybe replaced every 5 years) 30 feet into the chattahoochie river (which was only slightly calmed in this area) down river from atlanta; i remember being caught by undertow when we went too deep and coming back up 100ft down the river after it slowed in some shallows at a bend (and thinking it was great fun); not to mention swallowing all that polluted water... i remember girls showing off their boobs to the guys who jumped really far and kissing us like we were heroes, i remember calling the guys who were afraid to make the jump "pussies" and "wimps" and "faggots" and not worrying about being politcally correct or hurting each other's feelings

i remember riding my BMX 5 miles from home at 9 years old to get to a worn out field of red clay for dirt biking (with no helmet) and "mud wars" in the wet clay during and after a good rain, and getting beat with whatever mom had in hand [(for getting my clothes all dirty, as georgia red clay doesn't come out) and even while sniveling over the wire marks on my butt, and back and hands if i squirmed or tried to block] and standing naked in the front yard as dad hosed me off before i could come in; and accepting it all as an acceptable consequence of such a great day

i remember a gang of us kids running around all night in a field to catch fireflies in glass jars, with no adult supervision

i remember 12-16 year old boys and girls going skinny dipping, with alot of touchy-feely and groping (and underwater experimentation); and no one being called gay or going home with hurt feelings or worries over molestation... and even the little girls parents (everyone pretended that their kids aren't doing the same things that they did at that age) weren't worried, and thought it was a normal and healthy part of growing up

i remember fist fights and schoolyard scuffles that didn't have knives or guns, and no one was expelled or sent to jail for it

i remember summer nights when the doors and windows were open and the screendoors were even unlocked all night, and the only worry was a stray mosquito getting in

i'm only 31 and was born in 1975, this wasn't that long ago... but things changed fast

i remember watching my daughter jump on her own home-made bike ramp (she had a helmet and pads) that wasn't even a foot off the ground, i remember watching her climb the tree in the front yard; i remember biting my nails and holding my breath praying she wouldn't get hurt

i remember locking all the doors and windows at night in the same small town neighborhood, missing that cool draft we used to have in the good old days

i remember not even letting my little girl go out in our yard without me or her ma, or some trusted adult watching and making sure she's safe

i remember being immortal, and i remember when i realized i wasn't

and i remember the first moment that i sat regretting that my daughter will never be able to have the childhood that i did

BlackPhx -> RE: School 1960 vs School 2007 (very unPC) (7/24/2008 1:21:24 PM)

We all have those memories if we are older than 20. Then again I also remember getting eggs out from under the chickens and choosing the chicken for Sundays dinner without worry about Salmonella. I remember eating Apples, Pears and Figs right off the tree/bush and corn from the garden, sweet and raw off the cob without washing it in chemicals to remove pesticides. Grandpa used natural fertilizers and flora to reject insects in the garden. I remember when honey and evaporated milk was good for babies and every child wasn't started on soy milk before they ever touched a breast.

And I laugh everytime I think about my Grandmother living to 104 and outliving every Doctor that told her, her diet, and her snuff was bad for her and sigh remembering how she could not understand that children could die in wars but not drink, have children but not wed, and parents were no longer allowed to discipline them but were held responsible for their bad behavior.

Remember when you couldn't get kids to stop playing  and come inside, instead of having to force them to put down the video controller and go outside?

That happened when I was in elementary.. I was so sad I couldn't hug my teachers anymore...

But! My mama's from the South, so she still would spank me and make me responsible. Not once did I pitch a fit in public :-D

Hi Hanabale
the comment
it sadens, sickens and depresses me that i missed that part of americana.

it wasn't just americana ... i'm the op and it rings true for me as an Australian, it's more the time we were in rather than the location ... i've spoken to others of my era from New Zealand and the UK ... i remember during the summer holidays leaveing the house after breakfast and if you were home by dark .. that was all that mattered.  You'd eat in some mum's kitchen somewhere every front door was locked when you went out but the back door was always unlocked ... then.  Maybe this is why we all crave trust so much ...

...  and yes apologies if i picked the wrong location ... i actually thought i'd posted in 'off topic' ...

VadFarkas -> RE: School 1960 vs School 2007 (very unPC) (7/25/2008 5:27:02 AM)

No apologies are need, it is one of those times when what looks like a joke is so true it hurts.

On a similar note:
Yesterday I was watching our 7 year old grandson. He went down the street to look for his friend. When he came back, he said that his friend was not at home and his mom did not know where he was.
I was amazed at that but my grandson cleared it up when he said, "Well he's 10, so no need to tell anyone where you are going." It did remind me of this post and they way it used to be.[:D]

Hanable -> RE: School 1960 vs School 2007 (very unPC) (7/25/2008 8:39:43 AM)

its ok JulieorSarah.. it rings very true to me in america.. so i called it americana.. im sure its true all over the world.. its sad.. that we cant trust people to just be good and not try and kidnap our kids or steal from our homes.

Termyn8or -> RE: School 1960 vs School 2007 (very unPC) (7/25/2008 11:55:21 AM)

It seems the trend has been to attempt to remove all risk. This is impossible of course. And yes, some kids DIED taking risks, but that is why it is called a risk.

Risk taking will make a comeback I think because many consider a life devoid of risk not worth living. In a way we define success as a lack of failure. Remember the old saying "Nothing ventured nothing gained".

I think someone like George Carlin would have a blast in a thread like this. Then maybe it would be properly placed here in the humor section. Maybe Jeff Foxworthy could fill in.

Yup, pussyfication is a valid word. Even though I have always been scared of heights, I took other risks. It's like human nature to take risks. Maybe that's why so many people are addicted to gambling. They can lose everything and not want to stop, because they are not getting what they really need.

~Fast Reply~

I can't say I think it belongs in the humor section. It pretends that there was only ever one outcome to these situations in 1960. That no kid was ever beat to death by his schoolmates or no one caught breaking into a house ever did it again. The world was perfect and roses bloomed from farts. It pretends that no one thanks God for ADHD medication (*raises hand* I needed it, oh God I needed it as a child and now that I'm an adult I've ceased to need it as badly and - gasp - no one is trying to make me continue on it). As satire it points out that our school systems *have* gone way too far but it certainly doesn't strike me as funny. It would have to be closer to truth.

BlackPhx -> RE: School 1960 vs School 2007 (very unPC) (7/27/2008 11:30:14 AM)

They still take risks..they are called eXtreme-Games and it is all done with enough padding and equipment to give them the illusion that it is safe. Of course they also have other risks that they take.. mainly the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome from video games or text thumb from hours of text messaging. Weight is up, more and more kids are obese, diabetic and asthmatic..probably from over eating fatty fast foods, sitting in front of a computer or video game for hours and severe lack of exercise mainly due to the fact that schools are now even banning dodge ball and tag from recess. Their Risk? Not living to 25 without major damage to their hearts, neuropathy and even worse. Rejected vaccinations are bringing back the risk of  childhood diseases such as measles, polio and allergies are also becomiing more prevelant.

Risk is there all right, their being protected to death and .. We are being protected right out of our rights by the government to boot.

The reason I never went into teaching, and got out of nursery work. I want to give em a cuddle if they fall over! Shame the way it is.....

Not just America, this is a British thing also.

This is from someone who once faced a disciplinary procedure at a nursery for getting bubbles in a four year olds hair.....
