Hello Long Beach Girl.

There is already an extensive thread somewhere on this board that talks about Old Guard. Briefly, the term was originally applied to the early gay leather community that started after WW2. It is a highly structured, fraternal form of SM that values protocol and power hierarchies. There are some groups that call themselves "Old Guard" today. They aren't necessarily gay leather at all, but they, like the original "Old Guard" are highly structured and fraternal, and tend to value a lot of protocol.

If someone is approaching you and telling you that he is an "Old Guard" master, beware. It usually just isn't so.

Take care of yourself

Leonidas

Defining old guard in a modern context is one of those "what do you mean by that?" things.

The old guard may or may not have been ex WWII soldiers that may or may not have been gay and may or may not have been involved in a structured code of respect, that the person using the term "old guard" may or may not know about. (Respect like a Corporal for a Captain, maybe.) I hope that may or may not clear things up.

Seriously it is as clear as mud because the subject of a modern definition applied to the older term is clear as mud.

Anyway, many that call themselves "old Guard" do so because it sounds cool. Beware. Of course that warning is good for all occaisions.

Midear Cheeky-

Of course, this is only my two cents:

'old guard' is fine as a adjective. It generally mean the the person in question has a fen for protocols, structure, has good manners, and takes this stuff seriously, putting in the time to to learn their skills.

"Old Guard" as a noun is a myth of a long ago underground rigidly heirachical SM organisation. To me, to be Old Guard in this sense, you must be a gay man who's been doing this stuff before the Stonewall Riot.

Stay warm,
Lawrence

There is/was a thread on OLD GUARD in the Master's section.

Most BDSMers do not believe that OLD GUARD exist. It does not
follow whatever protocol or thought that those folks believe is needed.

There are several authors that talk about OLD GUARD from
Master Steve Sampson to Joseph Bean to Hardy Haberman to
Guy Baldwin, just to name a few. This girl believes in the OLD GUARD
and is HONORED to say she knows all of the above. Some of which
are part of her leather community.

If you want info or more discussion, you can find me most of the time
on yahoo, just look for stormiKnight_Bear.

Have a good day.

I can't remember what it was I was reading (it was definitely not kink related) and there was a mention of "old guard" mentality. Which gave me a chuckle, because my mind immediately linked it to kink stuff.

When people refer to "old guard" things, it's usually the "old timers" who did it "right" years before.

Top Cat Sir,

Actually you are very right. However, not all OLD GUARD was gay.
This girl admits that she is blown away that someone finally was not
bashing and putting the Old Guard down. For us leather lifestylest,
OLD GUARD is a part of us and our "raising" in the bdsm world.

Thank You for your comments.

As a related aside.

Does adding extra question marks make it more of a question than just one?

It gives the impression the questioner is hyperventilating as they ask, they're needing the answer so much.

Well, I get that impression at least.

Personally, I have four forms of punctuation for questions:

1) "?" - simple normal everyday questions. ex. "How was your day?"

2) "???" - questions that arise out of surprise or mild confusion. ex. "He did what to your where???"

3) "?!?" - questions that arise out of shock or medium confusion. ex. "You fucked who?!?"

4) "!?!" - questions that arise out of complete shoch or utter bewilderment. ex. "You fucked who and his what and you let them broadcast it live where!?!"

Punctuation, serving your emoticon needs since the dawn of civilization.

Yours,
Taggard

You missed one...

5) "!!!" - excitement mixed with mild to medium shock. ex. "Congratulations on finally getting fucked!!! It was about time!!!"
