So, after feeling stuff out for a little bit, I've decided to start investing in some toys for myself.

My question is, what are some good beginner's toys? There are about 42987 different kinds of nipple clamps and all kinds of fun stuff...

I know a lot of it has to depend on what I personally like...

But if y'all would be so kind as to provide some general thoughts, I'd surely appreciate it

[:D]

A very similar question was asked this week on the Ask a Mistress board.

My answer, and quite a few others, can be found here.

Enjoy!

You're awesome! Thanks!!

When I was in Orlando, I met a woman who grew up in the southwest, and she was BDSM-adopted by an Old Guard-style leather club there.  She was the only straight woman in the club.  She's a sub, and said the tradition she was taught was the sub should always bring her (his) own toys, and play with them only, to guarantee no problems in transmission of bodily fluids.

This was a formalization of something I was already practicing.  When I've met for play, I have almost never brought more than a blindfold and a pair of wrist restraints.  It's the sub's job to bring things she wants to be used on her.  I came upon that formula as a way to help ensure somone I was meeting (often for the first time) that she was safe and had control of the situation.  Besides, with a blindfold, a wooden spoon and a butter knife you can achieve a phenomenal range of sensation.

So I'd suggest you acquire (1) insertables, (2) a flogger, (3) anything else you'd like that is likely to soak up sweat, or blood if there's an accident (or that's the plan).  That way you'll know your long-term health is safe.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Beginning Toys (7/24/2008 7:48:04 PM)

Wow, not too many subs that I know have toy collections, Red!  Though I do demand that things like insertables (regardless of orifice!) be one-person items.

LadyH,
I have accumulated lots and lots of toys over the years. Combine my toy collection with Sir's HUGE toy collection...and well, now you know why we need a pick-up truck when we go to events! LOL

RedMagic1 -> RE: Beginning Toys (7/24/2008 7:58:45 PM)

Well, you know, Lady H.... I only date the very best![;)]

She talked about it as though it was THE Old Guard Tradition of the Southwest.  Maybe if Master Fire sees this thread she can clarify later on.  I don't know about the history.  I just know it's a good idea, and I think every sub I've ever played with owns more sextoys than I do.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Beginning Toys (7/24/2008 8:02:03 PM)

Erin, I think you are one of the exceptions!  [:D]  Heaven knows I was thrilled when I got my collection down to the ONE 40 gallon tote!  The really dumbass thing is that I don't actually *need* any of them---I just love the pretty!!  I am totally over buying new stuff purely because it leaves cool marks.  (I already HAVE the rubber mallet, that is grandfathered in...).

The soon-to-be-mine sjambok gets grandfathered in, too.

StrongSpirit -> RE: Beginning Toys (7/24/2008 8:20:52 PM)

BDSM is a big tent.

I don't really think you are going to get a good list of 'beginner' toys unless you talk a bit about what you like.

Do you like roleplay?  Get a costume
Do you like thuddy pain?  Get a thuddy flogger
Do you prefer something with more sting?  Or perhaps a cane?
How about rope?
Wax candles?
Chains?
Handcuffs?
Perhaps you like visual scenes - maybe some body paint.
------------
I would say you need to talk about what you do a bit more before we suggest toys.

What trips your triggers?

Monkeyontuesday -> RE: Beginning Toys (7/24/2008 9:24:40 PM)

haha, lots of things trip my triggers ;-)

You see, my hunnie isn't so much into this sort of thing, so I'm trying to start out really REALLY simple with things that are pretty hard to mess up... lol.

I guess easy-to-use things that would give him more confidence in starting out.. Or that I could possibly show him how to use.

And then there's the whole thing about styles... I was on some site earlier and there were TONS of different clamps and stuff... The difference is the sensation, I would imagine.. But, as I have literally never even seen some of these things in reality, I have no idea what to expect out of something.

Since I'm a poor college student, I don't want to waste my money on something that I won't use, nor can I sell (who's gonna buy second-hand gear? Ewww).

Shameless Plug.... My birthday's in a week... Anyone that wants to contribute is welcome.. ;-)

Leatherist -> RE: Beginning Toys (7/24/2008 9:27:22 PM)

why not ask him?

Run through a few sites together, see what he thinks is fun

Yeah... We tried that.. Well, I tried it. He just kinda went [:-] "erm... Whatever you want hunnie... *run away fast*"

So, even if I can't use it with HIM, I'd still like to build up a little collection that I can stroke and dream of someday using ;-)

okey dokey

clothespins.

small silicone butt plug.

Some sexy lingere, something trashy like crotchless panties. (they make a nice lacy frame for the flat end of the plug to be viewed through when you shake your ass at him)

Whiffle ball gag-cheap by the sixes in stores, use a rope to tie them in.

I already has the crotchless panties... [8|]

Leatherist -> RE: Beginning Toys (7/24/2008 9:42:57 PM)

Just keep experimenting. it's really not that "hard" to tell when a male is interested. [:)]

GreedyTop -> RE: Beginning Toys (7/24/2008 9:52:20 PM)

try the dollar store for pervertables... wooden spoons, clothespins, etc

MistressEllen444 -> RE: Beginning Toys (7/24/2008 9:59:53 PM)

Big box hardware stores are good for starters, chain (oh so cool against the skin and the sound is intoxicating), spring clamps, rope, etc.
As mentioned general dollar store stuff: clothes pins, candles, etc.
Finances should never stand in the way of your imagination.

GreedyTop -> RE: Beginning Toys (7/24/2008 10:04:04 PM)

*Snort* Ellen.. wanna check my bank account?? my imagination is champagne taste.. the rest of me is on a beer budget LOL

Exquemelin -> RE: Beginning Toys (7/24/2008 10:30:56 PM)

I actually won my first toy at the first munch I went to, a paddle one side fuzzy. Pretty soon after that i hit the dollar store and staples, spent about $25 and came out with a three or four rulers(avoid sharp edges), a yard stick, a set of wooden kitchen implements, and a very mean hair brush.
