there's no change in prices here - still above $4.30

Hang in there, it's going to go down, unless something crazy happens.

I find it really annoying that the price of gas is falling - apparently in response to the announcement that "we" can drill off shore. To me this just vividly points out that the price of gas is not connected to the cost of drilling and refining, but to the stock market. If enough people speculate in oil futures, then the cost of gas is messed with. Supply and demand had little to do with the prices that we are seeing.

I'd be interested to know what sort of formula that gas stations use to buy their petrol, that they can change the price of gas every day. I would have thought that once you buy a product, you put a reasonable mark-up on it and sell it at a set price until it is gone, then buy another load, and so on and so forth. I can't think of any other product we buy that  changes price every day, in response to no apparent stimulus.    very odd.

Venezuela has consistently gotten twelve cents a gallon. Just shows how mighty America is, huh?

Actually it is about supply and demand on the commodities market (not the stock market). But it is about future supply and demand. That is what trading commodities is about. they have contracts that you purchase by future monthly projections. All commodity trading is, is gambling without the Vegas show girls. It is a necassary evil if you are a hedge funder. I hedge grain and livestock options to secure a price for marketable goods. Oil is the same way, it has been the indecision and unwillingness of the Governments to advance energy, in both oil and other sources that had the markets fucking with consumers.

You see here is an often overlooked area of interest. Most Governments make tax money off of you cars fuel consumption. each gallon or liter has so much tax applied. They make tons of money off of fuel taxes. If your car got better fuel economy or used nothing but electricity how do they make money to build roads and fix bridges that are falling in now. They aren't stalling for energy rrasons, they are trying to figure out how to make the money they loose if you don't comsume the amount of fuel that you are now.

There's some food for thought.

Any product that has tyes to the commodity markets has price exagerations. While I ask the same question you did about how fast it goes up and yet it doesn't come down as fast. But ask a farmer to help you understand what he deals with everyday. Hell he has government programs to control his production to deal with as well. All in the name of tariffs and fair trade...Oh and to insure you have cheap affordable food. Supposedly.

We're way down to 4.29 here in the Seattle area and they want us to think that's a bargain.

Exactly!
It is NOT a bargain, and gas will soon {within a few weeks}, be going back up again.

Must of us realize that, so enjoy the bargains while you can.

We saw $3.75 a couple of days ago.

quote:

Whether or not any bubble has burst, Americans now live in an economy where the prospect of a gallon of gas for less than $4 is cause for relief.

That barrier may be broken as early as this weekend, as a two-week nosedive in crude prices begins to ripple out to gas stations nationwide.

The national average for a gallon of regular pulled back to just above $4 a gallon and oil tumbled to its lowest point in weeks Friday on the belief that prices have yet to reflect just how badly demand has deteriorated in the United States, the world's thirstiest oil consumer.

Prices at the pump are poised to dip even further, and could cost as much as 25 cents less by Labor Day, AAA spokesman Geoff Sundstrom said.

There's too much price resistance at $4.00 per gallon.
Even people who can afford it were cutting back on driving and using less!

I still see people driving too fast and too close in spite of being told on the news to slow down. It makes your gas mileage go farther.

I see less cars on the road but it still crazy out there. Sometimes i feel like it's Russian roulette. In 3 years time i have been hit by 3 different people. My poor
car. When i got it new some nice person (motorcyclist) keyed it. Yes, i did see them do it but was too far to see their plate or stop them. It was two guys.

Ah, California the land of nuts and fruits and high gas prices....

Gas is dropping? OMG! Let's all go buy V-8 SUVs! (Like last time...)

The real reason behind the dip, I suspect, is that several things have changed in the housing and economic indicators... speculators are no long buying up gas/oil futures, and that is allowing the price to drop... (most likely factor: Obama projected to win, and a pull out of US troops in two years. Then the US dollar begins to rise again, and suddenly they are putting their money elsewhere.)

So, Obama gets credit for this one too?

It was just coincidence that the price of oil began dropping when Bush lifted the presidential moratorium, and insisted on Congress doing the same...  Interesting perspective.

I just don't get the self destructive rhetoric of the partisan approach. Though I myself have a partisan way about me, however I doubt mine runs concurrent with yours Bipolar. You see I'm an American. Plain and simple, so I'll leave party bickering to the have nothing else to do types.

We're in 100 percent agreement here. I think we should have made strides last time we had a "crisis" to get our shit together. We had car companies trying to build economy cars and they were out to develope better methods of energy and propulsion. But we all became appathetic once again once the appeasement cycle began. We as citizens of our nations had our cake and were eating away and lost track of the ball.

Stop with the nonsensical party politics. It reduces the credibility you have as a sensible man. The rhetoric has become so devisive in this country that we disagree with something good or bad in the other guy ws the one that thought it up or claimed credit for it first.

Since when did we leave an entire country in the hands of some 5th grade classroom? The he said she said mumbo jumbo is at record pace and is ridiculous beyond measure. Obama has done nothing, McCain is only running for office and last I checked the "lame duck" was still in charge and as much as it pains me to say it, he got something else right. You can bet as sure as the Dems do, he has an agenda and it most likely isn't the greater good once again. But I haven't seen a candidate that was really interested in Amercan as a whole since, since, since................fuck I need some help here.............

To our non American posters, sorry about the American political process crap again, but sadly enough, our blunders seem to be effecting the whole damn planet...

It's unusual to see it drop in summer.

I suspect that pushback from gas station owners may have had something to do with it.  Their profit margin is razor thin on gas.  They rely on gas to bring in business, and make the real money from the sale of food and other nongas items.  The hike in gas dampened station visits, and the station owers must have been hurting.

Gas on Maui hasn't changed at all. $4.63, $4.65, $4.66...depending on which part of the island you're at.

They had to lower prices... they ran out of room to store their cash... they either had to cut prices or start burying money in their back yards.

The only reason prices are falling is fear....fear that America will get serious about alternate fuel sources despite all the payoffs in congress.
