Just what we've always suspected, but is now verified by former White House Scott McClellan: The White House fed "talking point" memos to the production staff and talent of Fox News. Their job was to disseminate the propaganda on their shows, building up support for such things as the War, wiretapping of Americans, Torture... All of which is prohibited by law, of course, but when has the law ever been followed by "Bad King George?"

So, if you feel in anyway betrayed by the lies that led us all on this "merry mideast adventure"... you weren't just being paranoid about the Bushies using an entire network to aid and abet their "Master Plan" via manipulation of the media.

"Fair and Balanced" my ass!

Just kinda makes you think of that line from "V" For Vendetta, doesn't it?

"We just report the news, we don't make it up.... that's the government's job."

Hello bipolaber,

I couldn't agree more...but post 9/11 this news channel was the most pro-government, pro-Bush channels of them all...even now their criticisim is lukewarm and very light, and in my opnion they are very one-sided, biased and sometimes downright ignorant....in any case they are the Information Ministry, they should make it formal...you know, have it be known as the "state" or better yet "government" channel....

They already have one of those - it's called PBS / NPR.

The other networks sound just like you do... especially MSNBC and CBS.

FOX News just provides a little bit of balance, something that seems completely alien to certain Democrats who it seems would love nothing better than to dictate what news may or may not be disseminated over the airwaves.

Fox is very sensationalist and tries to be slick.  PBS is good at actual dialogue and discussion of ideas along with in-depth journalistic reporting.

Government TV (PBS) leans very far to the left and can't match FOX News, can't even come close when it comes to presenting both sides of any given argument.

PBS doesn't even try to hide its bias.

If Fox is such a terrible place to get their news... why do they have the most viewers of any cable news channel... And why do they rate in the top 10 for total viewers of all Cable networks?

MasterKalif,

I would agree that it has been the Ministry of Information for the state or
government.   But that is only because the current administration/govenment
is a mouthpiece for the famous Wednsday Morning Meetings held by neocon
Grover Norquist where everyone is told the talking points for the week.

After they are out of office I expect that Fox will still be the mouthpiece for the
far right wing.  Even though they will no longer be the government.  And Fox will
still pedal their far right viewpoint as being "Fair and Balanced"  And the right
wing will still be quick to label any other viewpoint as part of the "liberal media",
therefore dismissible.

The only thing remotely close to being as far left as Fox is right is Pacifica radio.
Unlike Norquist and his group they take no government money.  Nor do they
sell access to the government or pedal influence as his group has done.

NPR & PBS are not left wing.  They attempt to be middle of the road.  The right
wing labels them as left in an attempt to keep them intimidated.  Calling them left
wing is another example of being "Fair and Balanced"

Outlier

The popularity goes hand in hand with the sensationalism and slick packaging.  I stopped watching their news years ago because it focused on murder and mayhem.

On a lighter note, of the top 10 channels, 5 show cartoons, 4 of those being "family programming" and Adult Swim being for persons under the influence of certain recreational substances.

You seem more like an FX, ESPN or Spike kind of guy to me.

The PBS Los Angeles affiliate is KCET which has a good mix of family programming, news, science, history, arts and political discussion.

I also listen to the local PBS radio station, KCBX, for music and talk shows.

Thadius,

Well, the numbers may be skewed, for one thing. Not all cable and satillite viewer packages include half the channels that are on that list, and others have varying combinations of them. Combine that with varied demographics across the nation, and you essentially have meaningless numbers....

Except, just about everyone carries Fox, and most all cable heads distribute the major networks and Disney/Nick/Toon, because it looks good on their requirement to carry "family friendly" programming. The reason pretty much carries Fox is because it's a Rupert Murdock station, and Murdock, for all intents and pourposes, is a monopoly. I'm not to familliar with "TV by the numbers" or from whom they cull their data... so I'm not sure I can accept their report as entirely accurate yet. Some of the places I track this stuff on however, show things a little differently: Fox has been slipping of late, while MSNBS is actually beating it out in about half the timeslots, in most major markets, for the last year. (This could be due to the summer rerun doldrums...)

Besides, you can't judge quality just by it's popularity. If that were the case, then "Pants Off Dance Off" and "Dog the Bounty Hunter" would be considered equal quality programs as "Lost" or "BSG" or "24."  McDonalds is a popular place to eat, but I'd hardly call it a high quality place to get food.

I can agree that many providers offer varied channels, and that some may not have certain channels.  However, I cannot think of one that doesn't also carry at least CNN.

As for the quality, it is definitely subjective to personal likes and dislikes.  Did you see Obama's comment and question about Fox being on at all of the military bases he visited?  He quipped that Bush must be mandating it be on, never taking into account that Armed Services broadcasting also has CNN and a couple others, so it could actually be choice.  I think it was more him just teasing Garrett Anderson, but the other possibility is there.

Venadval,

PBS is quite aware of the fact that it's fortunes (literally, their budgets) swing with the political wind. As such they tread a very careful line as to not make enemies on either side of the asile. Primarily, they get their "liberal media" label because they a) run Frontline... b)carry Bill Moyers, and c) run science programming, which makes some types think they are irreligious.

The real PBS, however, services two demographics that are usually forgotten about by the larger conglomerates: preschool kids, and seniors.

It, and NPR, also act as the official EBS of the government, in case of disaster. That's another reason why attacks on the system from Newt and others, have never really taken hold... the government (of either party) sees PBS as a resource they can make use of. (But, threatening to "destroy that ol' debbil, liberal PBS" sounds great to the base, and often shakes all kinds of money out of them.) Frankly, I doubt that they give a damn. When they are out blowing $150 billion a year on the war, they really don't worry about a paltry $300 million for PBS nationwide. Or, putting it against the overall federal budget, they make up about 1/800th... To the feds, running PBS is like an average household letting their kid use their allowance to buy a CD once every couple of months.

Besides... what would the world be, without the Cookie Monster?
