i am wondering,how would one know the proper size for a corsett,is it cup size or perhaps ,waist or ,does it go small .to extra large...fragiledesires

I'm not entirely positive, as I've only went shopping for one once so far.

The lady at the shop informed me it is sort of related to cup size and chest size. If your bra is a 36, and your cup is a D, you need to add 4 sizes to the number (since D is the 4th letter). So, a person who wears a 36D would need to purchase a corset in a size 40.

Now, this was just at the location where I was shopping. I wouldn't be surprised if there were other methods of measuring, particularly if you were having one custom made.

Well, that's a. . . different way to do it. Most places go by either waist size, bust measurment, or custom measurments. The generic, off the rack, internet corset is generally by waist size. So if our waist is 30 inches, you'd want to order a 26 or 28 inch corset, though you should follow ordering instructions on an individual basis. If you have a significantly larger bust size, go up a size of two. Good quality corsets (as in really good) are made to your exact measurements (bust, ribs, waist, hips, height, etc.)

If you're buying in a store, start with your waist measure and keep trying them on.

I've always seen corset makers that take your bust size (which is the width around your ribcage) and subtract a couple inches. Then to get a good fit, they take your waist measurement as well, and again, subtract a few inches. In stores I've always just seen the bust measurement (and they recommended where I got mine to get it a size smaller for a good fit all-around).

Warning: if your body is not in the average proportions (say, you are very busty, or have a thick or wasp waist, or are afflicted with steatopygia) then I recommend you find a place to try one corsets, or price custom fit. Me, I am basically one size in the torso and another in the waist and hips, and have been all my life; used to buy junior 11 or 13 tops and size 16 or 18 stlacks.

Example: I wear a 44c or 42C bra, depending on style. However, my waist is also 42 inches, and hips 48. The first corsets I tried on, at Torrid, size 44 and 46 (I believe they used bra size), I looked as if I was a little girl "wearing Mommy's corset". There was air space between my tits and the corset at the top, with it laced to zero space at the top. Going down in size, I didn't fit even when I went down to a size 40. Still loose at the top.

When I finally found the *under-bust* corset that I currently wear (and have a photo or two of on my profile), it is a size 36 (waist measurement, size 38 was too big) but I wear it laced edge-to-edge at the top and vee-ed out wide at the bottom. I've got my eye on a couple of waist cincher designs at www.delilahscollection.com, but when I eventually get a full corset, it'll HAVE to be custom.
