Ok, so im kinda new at the lifestyle, but I work in a porn store, and to tell you the truth prices are outragous on nearly everything, so I cant afford to buy much at all,even at wholesale through my employer. So question for all of you handy and crafty individuals out there, IDEAS!? I've read some of the DYI toy books, but now I'm looking for something more! I would love to make a whole toy collection for myself, but I don't much like what I see in a lot of the published books. My newest toy I made is a flogger out of bungee cord rubber, and let me tell you it's an OUCH! that I absolutly love. So any Ideas, and thus instructions on howto wold be most appreciated!

You might want to look around this forum under the word "homemade" , there are quite a few threads with ideas. There was an attempt once to form a homemade toy group but i think it died.

I suggest finding the closest tandy leather, probably in a RadioShack FYI, and just wandering around.  I also would recommend the same thing of Lowes or Homedepot.  The inspiration is all over the place for the Do It Yourselfer.

As far as a project goes, a Play Horse, Pony (ouch), kneeler, or other restrain table is always a quick easy project to do.  Leather work usually takes longer just because of the nature of the material, and the same for handmade toys.

As far as toys, buy some Friendly Plastic, google checkout, Costumes4less.com and get playing.  Also Plastic-Dip or another liquid rubber is a nice addon to any metal toys that need protction or a better grip.

My first collar was a Tandy leather dog collar kit!  I think they still sell this.  I trimmed it and painted it and it's worked great for years.  Had a friend buy a few of those and make them into cuffs as well.

Pet stores are also a great source of ideas and cheap items.

And our FAVORITE things come from Sports Chalet or REI.  Climbing gear works great.  Harnesses are often expensive (though there are cheap versions) -  but look for "tubular webbing" and "carabiners".   And if you use it for suspension be sure to use a "locking carabiner"
*We even used that tubular webbing to make my Flat Kat (http://www.geocities.com/sadistic_furniture/accessories.html)

Just beware the idea that you are actually getting off cheap,because it's so rarely the case.

Between tools time and materials you may find you are spending more for some items.

There is a reason artisans charge what we do, because we have already messed up 5-10 attempts to figre out what works and what doesn't. Not saying you can't do anything I do, just saying be honest with yourself about if you are really saving any money.

$40 in tools + 6 hours of your time @ $10 + $30 in materials = $130 that it costs you to make item X.

Irishm57 -> RE: DYI (8/2/2008 3:05:13 AM)

I have to disagree with the cost to make it. Since the tools one might have to buy could be used for other things besides making a bdsm toy. Even if let's say one had to buy a sabre saw to make a paddle, it is an initial investment, but that tool can be used on furniture, cabinettes etc. or more paddles. So each time you use that tool on something else after the first paddle the initial cost of the tool is half of the previous. Eventually in a year or so that intial tool investment of 40 dollars , that first paddle cost , is probably around 2 to 5 dollars.

The time cost, i would agree with if one had to take an "unpaid" day off from work. But on a weekend when it is pouring rain and there is nothing on the scifi channel, i wouldnt count the hours i put into making a new toy a "cost". Actually it is a health benifit. one isn't sitting in a chair watching the tube.

Yes a few messed up attempts will happen, so there is a material cost, but the feeling of using that toy "that i made" is worth it.

not to mention one or 2 of the toys i made for personal use aren't made by anyone i know of, like the humbler stocks ( i was going to patent those) , or the copper cage.

Where I work all I do is sit here and play online 8 to 16 hours a aday! I can do arts and crafts here, and have made a flogger and a cane. My boss is cool with it as long as i clean up my mess :) It's a porn store for crying out loud! I'm so BORED here, but I love it at the same time, I just need stuff to do to prevent the burnout

LadybugBlue -> RE: DYI (8/3/2008 10:18:37 AM)

another option for the kinkster on a budget is to think "pervertable"...  My hubby and I can walk through a 99cent store and find SO many things with which to torture... from little hair clips that can be used as miniclamps to spatulas to fly swatters to laundry lines.

And don't even get us started at Bed Bath & Beyond (especially in the Beyond), Dom Depot, or Petco....

This thread had some great ideas in it.  Also, you could try the Frugal Domme website...some great, easy to make, inexpensive toys.

dollar stores yes, I completely agree awesome place, half the stuff there seems covertly sexual.

Yeah, what he said.  Been there, do that

Simple nipple (or clit) suction device. Two syringes (diameter to your particular taste) fish tank tubing and two binder clips. Take the plungers out of the syringes and attach a length of tubing to the tip of each, make the tubing pieces about 12 inches long. Place the large open end of the syringe over nipple (or area to be suctioned), extract the air by suction, fold over and clamp the tubing with a binder clip. Really does a good job. You can dip the open ends of the syringes in tool dip if desired.

I know I love playing with mine.
