I have to disagree with the cost to make it. Since the tools one might have to buy could be used for other things besides making a bdsm toy. Even if let's say one had to buy a sabre saw to make a paddle, it is an initial investment, but that tool can be used on furniture, cabinettes etc. or more paddles. So each time you use that tool on something else after the first paddle the initial cost of the tool is half of the previous. Eventually in a year or so that intial tool investment of 40 dollars , that first paddle cost , is probably around 2 to 5 dollars. The time cost, i would agree with if one had to take an "unpaid" day off from work. But on a weekend when it is pouring rain and there is nothing on the scifi channel, i wouldnt count the hours i put into making a new toy a "cost". Actually it is a health benifit. one isn't sitting in a chair watching the tube. Yes a few messed up attempts will happen, so there is a material cost, but the feeling of using that toy "that i made" is worth it. not to mention one or 2 of the toys i made for personal use aren't made by anyone i know of, like the humbler stocks ( i was going to patent those) , or the copper cage.
