The only thing that is better is that the people of the United States learned on 9/11 that we are not immune to international terrorism on our side of the oceans. However, every economist with a pet theory is blaming the world's economic problems on 9/11, and that is like blaming Greedy for the meteorite that wiped out the dinosaurs. While admittedly, Greedy has that kind of power, I really doubt she was around back then. The United States has been led by a man with a single minded focus, and that is Bin Laden, and to that end he has spent trillions trying to locate the man. The cost to the American people has been that the economy that once flourished in wartime is floundering. We can no longer buy both butter and bullets, as the term goes. As goes the American economy, so goes the World economy, thanks to the global market. When the spending bubble bursts, Enron will look like a hiccup, and the savings and loan failures wont even be in the running to compare. Health wise, the United States and the world are dealing with antibiotic resistant diseases that could very well turn into pandemics without warning. At least 4 new strains of Plague have been discovered that can shake off the strongest antibiotics. Then of course there is AIDS, SARS, Avian Flu, and a host of other viruses that would wipe out half the planet given a chance. What it boils down to is that the American Dream has turned into an American Nightmare. As a society we are spending money on things that we dont need, ignoring our own health in the process, and in the end, the world will pay the price.
