George Bush has managed to drop kick the country into the deep end of the ocean without a life vest.  I am stunned to see how bad off people are and the state of the economy, etc. with him heading the ship.  *sigh*

between border problems and the huge deficit from the war, (just two problems on a mile long list), i'm quite sure it will take years to fix what bush has done.  this morning i was reading that bush wants to triple AIDS assistance around the world.  i'm all for helping others, but how is the US going to afford all of this?  higher taxes is how, but what the hell does he care at this point?  he'll be gone in a few months to let the next president try to mop up his mess.

Well, a fairly lopsided vote so far.

DC that was before September the 11th; you'll be hard pressed to find anyone swapping the ignorant bliss the world was in then with the world we are in now. IMOSHO,INGAA

So significant that event it was almost like a different era that won't be seen again for a long time and all the financial doom and gloom is symptomatic of this less confident era we are now in. That and the housing bubble which was a product of more carefree optimism preceding the current pessimism.

Good point, Raechard, but I'm not sure we can pin everything on 9/11.

No, we can't.  But we can pin it on W being pretty stupid and out of touch.

i don't think everything that's wrong with the country right now is one man's fault...nor did it come from one incident...i think that a lot of us have been complicit in the problems that we have developed...i know that i have lived beyond my means & have debt much higher than what i would like to have...back in the late 40's, my grandparents' home burnt to the ground & they wanted to rebuild...they had never bought anything on credit, paid cash for everything, including the property, which meant that they couldn't get a loan to rebuild...after that, my grandmother kept one store credit card which she used twice a year so that they would have a credit history...

today, there are so many who want to own what they cannot afford...along with manufacturing abandoning the country, this pretty makes our economy built like a house of cards......

a very lopsided vote... and i agree with lilsubl.. its not all GWB or 9/11's fault.. to many people forget/dont care that they do have to pay for the stuff they put on there credit cards and such... there is WAY to much debt in this country.

now im not saying GWB and 9/11 didnt hurt but come one.. u have to admit the country was sliding into a recession/an economic downturn before bush took office. all the businesses leaving and/or moving jobs to different (cheeper) countries dosent help either.. if there r no jobs no one has money.. so more peopld go into debt jsut to bu ythe stuff they do need.. all i can say is we need to reform/rethink the whole government economy thing.. all of it.

We got our first yes vote. I wish the voter had shared his or her thinking.

The only thing that is better is that the people of the United States learned on 9/11 that we are not immune to international terrorism on our side of the oceans.

However, every economist with a pet theory is blaming the world's economic problems on 9/11, and that is like blaming Greedy for the meteorite that wiped out the dinosaurs.  While admittedly, Greedy has that kind of power, I really doubt she was around back then.

The United States has been led by a man with a single minded focus, and that is Bin Laden, and to that end he has spent trillions trying to locate the man.

The cost to the American people has been that the economy that once flourished in wartime is floundering.  We can no longer buy both butter and bullets, as the term goes.  As goes the American economy, so goes the World economy, thanks to the global market.

When the spending bubble bursts, Enron will look like a hiccup, and the savings and loan failures wont even be in the running to compare.

Health wise, the United States and the world are dealing with antibiotic resistant diseases that could very well turn into pandemics without warning.  At least 4 new strains of Plague have been discovered that can shake off the strongest antibiotics.

Then of course there is AIDS, SARS, Avian Flu, and a host of other viruses that would wipe out half the planet given a chance.

What it boils down to is that the American Dream has turned into an American Nightmare.  As a society we are spending money on things that we dont need, ignoring our own health in the process, and in the end, the world will pay the price.

bad things have always been with us.

We now see some of the damage Bill Clinton did by us joining the WTO- etc.

We seen an erosion of the constitution.

We have seen the dollar weakened.

I personally am better off now then 8 years ago- but I thank ME for that.

By failing to protect the freedoms of the Constitution, the thing that makes us worthy of emulation, by failing to protect its operatives, by failing to aid the citizens of New Orleans (no, not being able to respond because they were all at a wedding wasn't bad enough, when they did send help, it was in the form of toxic trailers), and by failing to adhere to the Geneva Conventions, our government has failed in its most basic  and fundamental responsibilities. We have  seen the demise of an industrial base that was far past its prime, lost the opportunity to replace that industrial base and take the forefront in stem cell research and green technologies, damaged the system of checks and balances, bitten the hand that picks the food that feeds us thereby harming immigrants and agricultural businesses, and been the direct cause of a decrease in the quality of women's health both nationally and internationally. Need I remind everyone that the fool put a VETERINARIAN at the head of Women's Health? The reason Bush needs to triple AIDS funding now is because he cut off funding to women's health NGOs internationally if they provided abortions, or just offered abortion counselling and birth control, which in turn crippled what was the only source of reproductive health care for millions of women. No reproductive health care and education equals an increase in AIDS. That, BTW, was his first official act as President - reinstating the Reagan era Global Gag Rule. And he gave patriotism a bad name, brought  it down to the level of McCarthyism. Tis too true, "Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel."

Rant over,
Mistress Sophia

Well, we're up to two yeses. I'm honestly surprised at how lopsided the vote is.

I really am. I skim the political threads fairly often, and CM seems to have a fair number of folks on both sides of the aisle. Given that, I'd have expected the vote to be closer.

Now, it could be that the poll isn't catching the eye of our political regulars because its in Random Stupidity instead of Off Topic.

Perhaps a large number of people are avoiding the thread so far, because they can't bring themselves to vote either way? And who voted 'yes'?!!! I demand to know.

By the way, nice job on a succint yet effective poll, dc :-) .
