That's understandable. All of us start with the same ingrained response to pain. Pain, when you think about it is simply the body's signalling system telling you that damage is occurring. By default, all of us are wired to avoid that signal and for very good reasons.
However, consider this. In the end, pain is nothing more than an electro-chemical stimulus engendered by a specific type of excitation of the nerves. It doesn't really become "pain" until hits the brain and gets interpreted. Up until then, it's simply a signal. Now, consider how much you know of people and how widely they can interpret the same things. Cold, for instance, is a lot like pain. It's an ingrained response and we automatically avoid too much of it. However, I grew up in Wisconsin and 30 degrees for me is t-shirt weather. For some of my california friends, 30 degrees is parka time.
Now, give a little thought to what it means to train someone. Can you setup a situation which would encourage someone to re-interpret the pain signals as somethign else? Absolutely. Just one way to do so is to get them so hot and bothered that pretty much anything will be considered as erotic, then introduce some light pain (very light). Rinse/repeat.
In the end, once you really pick it apart, it's not nearly as mysterious or unbelievable as it might seem. Heck, I workout and experience pain routinely and register it as a good thing. Those sore muscles are definitely a pain signal in response to some light damage that's been caused. Yet I (and zillions of other people who workout regularly) interpret them as satisfying and good.
