sometimes......by the way the roses look beautiful Thunder.[:)]

Kittin, I have always worked in "corporate america" and even at the bastion of conservative dressing, MBNA, we were never told any instructions on underthings for god sake. Can you imagine? [8|]

Nipples should not show through a sheer top during a meeting, actually what I find freaky is that people need to be actually told that they need to dress properly for work.

My point is, they don't need to be told how to dress! I have yet to encounter the kind of unkempt/slutty look with the nipples showing I've heard about. At a certain level of industry, people want to be taken seriously. And the few weirdos who show their nipples, well... they don't usually get to stay very long anyway. And how would they get hired in the first place?

I think it's presposterous and out of order for any business to tell their employees what to wear: when so much ranting goes on against 'the nanny state' and suchlike, I'm amazed industry gets away with this kind of cryptofascism rofl. In Europe, arguably the best-dressed continent on the planet, it wouldn't occur to businesses to dictate how employees should dress, not that I know of anyway.

Still amazed [:D] .

You'd be shocked at some of the stuff that passes for 'rules' here in Texas. Cryptofascism is an understatement. I applied at one place, and turned down the interview after their HR packet specified that women must have hair no shorter than 3" and no longer than collar length unless it was worn in a bun -- and that employees' hair color could be any shade of black or brown, but that shades of red or brown would have to be approved by human resources, and any "unusual" color was forbidden. Crimeney's sakes -- I change my haircolor according to the season and my mood -- I wouldn't have lasted 2 seasons there!

Some of the stuff is really ridiculous. They get away with it, though, because if you don't like it, you don't have to work for them -- talk about "corporate clone"!

But but but... aren't job applicants (and even more to the point, employees) protected from this kind of bullshit?! Isn't there a law to ensure business remains reasonable in the demands it makes of its employees? Or are workers just spare parts in the corporate machine?

Let's say a company refuses its female workers wear trousers; or that they don't allow short hair, on the basis that it's not 'feminine' enough. Or that men have to be shaven just so, and get their face inspected ever morning... where does it stop? I'm freaking out here.
More amazed than ever [>:] .

As long as you have comparable requirements for both genders, can prove that there is a "good reason" for the rule, it will fly. The company that had the female hair rules had similar rules for men. No crew cuts or shaved heads, no hair longer than the top of the jawbone, and only black, brown, or natural red hair, or naturally graying hair, and only short, trimmed mustaches for facial hair. We have places here that don't allow women to wear pants or pantsuits. We have other places that don't allow any facial hair at all. MOST places don't allow piercings aside from one hole in the ear in women for earrings. Only a handful allow visible tattoos.

Much of the city isn't that bad, but the financial and oil companies here are more ultraconservative than you can imagine. Their HR departments will also tell you things that -aren't- in writing... but if you don't abide by them, you might as well kiss your job goodbye. These include telling you what you're allowed to have showing on your desk, what color makeup or lipstick you can wear, etc. It may not be -legal-, but the truth is that nobody says anything about it, because they all want to keep their high-paying jobs (and yes, these jobs do pay substantially better and have significantly better benefits than almost anything else in the area.)

The frowns and smiles for "visible nippleage" are in roughly equal proportions.  I had to get thicker bras because the other ones caused too many distractions.  (And those were lightly padded to begin with!)

In regards to pantyhose at a conference, I think you will be fine without them except for the sit down dinner.  IIRC, business casual in the South West in the summer time does not require pantyhose.

Especially in that truck driver T-shirt of yours. Get a pashmina over those shoulders. Now!

Tsk tsk... people posting on fashion threads who don't know the nature of a pashmina (a really passé pure cashmere fashion accessory from the late nineties/early noughties) deserve a month spent in the company of Anna Wintour [8D] .

Fashion is a bitch, I couldn't agree more - but trust me: it's nothing to do with 'khaki pants', 'buttoned down business shirts', and 'pant suits'. Yikes!  [8D] .

Must be nice. Most of the Houston Business District businesses still require pantyhose or stockings all summer. Fortunately, the required skirt lengths are long enough that garters and stockings will pass. Before I got a job that didn't require hose, I cherished garter belts and stockings during the summer.

They are NOT passe... I have a half-dozen and I love them (especially because another characteristic of Houston is that everyone whines if the temperature during the winter gets below 70... but they keep their buildings at 60 year round -- by mid-day, it feels like I'm typing in the refrigerator in my office!)

How do you cope with 'the pull'? Those things always end up just above the knee (if you're lucky) after a hard day's work. I'm a definite stocking fancier, but it's something I reserve for bed.

When I worked in high powered places I swore by a few brands of 'collants': Dim, Falke and Gerbe. They make wickedly fine hose that look exactly like a tanned leg. Alas... those things are nearly impossible to find around suburban America :-( .

Oh no..that is too funny. I bet you froze your *petals* off out there. [:)]

I much prefer stockings and a garter belt to pantyhose.  They are so much sexier and more comfortable.  If you are on the short side like myself, the top of the pantyhose waist band sits somewhere just below your breasts!  [sm=rolleyes.gif]

Those brands sound very high priced and classy.  Can you order them by mail?

One of my friends swears by the stockings and vintage style lingere from this catalogue -
