History will show that this generation is the stupidest, most judgemental, narcissistic, condescending, and fascist generation that has ever existed. They know what's best for everyone else, and they will force their decisions down your throat, no matter the consequences.
The slippery slope is now a full fledged landslide.

This is about dollars and cents.
Obese and diabetic children "on the dole" in l.a. cost taxpayers millions.

One thing i am SUPER sick of is the discussion of how unaffordable eating healthy is.
i work in food science in los angeles and i can tell you this:

even in south central l.a. you can walk into a grocery store in so cal and find the following:

jumbo bag of rice- 20 servings $4.00
assorted fruit and veggies on sale (use your club card, kids)- 69c to $1.00 per pound
meat in jumbo packs- CHEAP on sale w club card...quantities can be frozen!!!
bags of beans- $1.00 if you buy on sale
frozen fruit or veggies, canned fruit and veggies & beans, canned meat--not as good as fresh, but it's inexpensive and it's there.

if you WANT to be healthy, you can feed yourself cheaper at home than you can at mc donalds.
the problem is that people don't want to do that. they want fat and salt and soda.
they want snickers and skittles and cheetos.

i remember my poor days. brown rice and frozen veggies with a few bites of canned chicken or tuna.
tasty? not really. but i was eating for under 50c per meal and getting the nutrition my body needed.

Fast food doesnt make people  fat.
Eating gargantuan quantities of fast food is what does it.

As I type this I am eating a Pilchard Sandwich on Brown Bread....luverly.

I wonder when they are going to mandate exercise programs.  I mean let's face it, for some of the folks being targeted the only time they move is to go to the fridge, restroom, or to get some fast food.  Now they won't have to leave the house, as often.

As one of the Marines in Generation Kill said " Only in America can poverty be measured by obesity".  I bring it up partly tongue in cheek, because only here do we have to close restaurants down to prevent the poor from overeating.

C'est la vie,
Thadius

I don't think you can with adults; unless employers force them to do it like they're trying in Japan.  But you can do it in schools  Down here, Huckabee mandated more PE classes and mandatory BMI notifications for parents.  I thought it was a great idea, but our new Democratic governor has done away with it.  Healthy habits have to start at a young age.

They seem to be able to dictate everything else, in the interest of health and cost savings.... I can see them requiring a 15 minute workout everyday upon arrival to work.  I still think the entire reason for trying to get everybody skinny, is so that when they mandate full body latex suits, they can focus on height in making them.  Or for even shallower reasons, they don't want to see obese folks in latex... and now that I had a flashback to the days of spandex, I must go clear those images from my mind by watching porn.

Thadius,
I think you stumbled across the missing part of every one of the old Star Trek shows and Sci-Fi movies about how they had entire populations of a planet dress the same! Who knew that is was through Democratic initiatives such as this one.

Aren't you on the "ban the automobile" bandwagon?

Or at least on the "keep gasoline unaffordable" bandwagon?

I mean, what about the poor, helpless planet...

quote:

Folks who live in parts of the south side of chicago are several miles away from the nearest supermarket with bus travel their only real option for getting there. Getting a few days of groceries home on a CTA bus is a pleasure everyone should experience just once.

You seem to misunderstand my point.

The vast majority of people in the affected areas don't/can't afford to drive just to eat. So with no groceries the fast food places become their only options.

The LA city council is hopefully also trying to get supermarkets to move into the area where they banned new fast food places.

As to cars and gas. I own a car and certainly have no intention of giving it up. I think present gas standards are a joke and that SUV's should be taxed so much only people who absolutely have to hav ethem will buy them.

Gas prices are high due to the oil companies knowing they can get away with anything while GWB is in office. They'll be down to around $2.50 a gallon next summer.

Dom Ken is correct here...even without the spike in gas, the phenomenon of 'food ghettoes' was well known... kids, adults, pregnant moms, elderly, disabled, in certain areas the only choices for 99.9% of their nutrition was in places that had nothing healthier than stale Bimbos to offer.

And while it may be a choice for some families to pile the kids into the car for a trip to the vomitorium.... errrrr,CiCis, there are more than a few people for whom even that would be a welcome change.   You don't just stroll 9 miles to shop at Kroger after a day spent on your feet.

It was really trendy there for a while for politicians to announce that they were going to live on food stamps, or on the 'average budget'... while staffers had nutritionists trot out 'meal plans' that made Spam into Beef Wellington... if one had a kitchen full of appliances and such...and a limo to go shopping in, etc.

The only way this LA program has a chance, is if somebody moves into these neighborhoods and offers affordable fresh produce and so forth... there are co-ops that have done it, and a company called EasyWay in Memphis offers a variety of produce in exactly this sort of area...

http://www.easywayproduce.com/ {MUTE YOUR SPEAKERS! CHEEZY AND LOUD JINGLE}

Without something to fill the gap, this will be just political grandstanding.

As I said earlier, Wal-Mart has made attempts in several inner cities to build Supercenters.  I know a lot of people hate Wal-Mart, but they do actually sale affordable groceries including fresh produce.  The leftist, upper-middle class politicians in these cities find it trendy to bash everything Wal-Mart and have kept them out.

So it boils down to limousine liberal assholes telling the proles who they may and may not buy things from, and what they should and shouldn't be doing in regards to lifestyle choices.

Agreed. A large part of the problem is that government keeps the large stores that can offer cheap, healthy produce out of cities. The solution is to let them in, not to ban fast food.

Another criticism of many inner city areas is that liquor stores are more common than grocery stores.  But is banning liquor stores a good solution, or is it better to have business incentives for grocery stores, or a apply both tactics at once?

Neither.  What moron thinks a person will walk down the street, see a liquor store, and spontaneously decide to buy booze?  And if a grocery store were there instead, he or she would buy healthful vegetables?

The only reason the liquor stores are there is because there is demand.  Until and unless the demand is reduced, either the stores will be there or someone will make a killing smuggling booze in.

Frankly, if the areas that are being targeted (and the people yall seem to generally be talking about) are as impovershed as is coming across - how the fuck are they able to afford fast food in the first place?  It can't be purchased on food stamps.  If these are people who honestly have no jobs, are living solely on welfare to pay their rent and utilities, etc - where the hell are they coming up with extra to pay for eatting out enough to become obese?  If they're as poor as yall are implying - they'd have to Walk to McDucks or Buger Thang - because they can't afford to own a car.  And unless they live right across the street - then the walk to get there and the walk home would give them a significant amount of exercise daily to help burn off the excessive amount of calories to be found in fast food.

From the standpoint of a business owner - it's stupidity of the highest order to put a business in where No One In The Neighborhood can actually Afford to buy from you.  If the neighborhoods are so impovershed as all that - then what Intelligence businessperson is going to WANT to build there???

These people aren't unemployed that's a myth. Most are what would be called underemployed. They work minimum wage or near minimum wage jobs often part time so two or even three jobs are needed to pay the rent. They ride public transit to their jobs and simply don't have the time or energy to get home and go 3 to 5 miles by bus to get to the supermarket to buy some groceries.

Merc, this is neither a Democratic nor a Republican project.  The Los Angeles City Council is the group behind the law.

Maybe they could mandate that the obese, poor, welfare recipients (insert your favourite scapegoat) started running rickshaws for those poor overpaying for gas priced city dwellers with jobs, there must be a market for it, they could drive busses in from South Cnetral, drop em off at the rickshaw  place and send em out..it gives em  excercise.... no time to eat.... then bus em back home again and stopping off at a supermarket. It saves on gasoline, mind you  the pollution might kill a few of em off, but theres hundreds more where they came from.... maybe have a portable defibrillator in each rickshaw for anyone who has a heart attack while running from the gangs. Oh or attach one of those armbands to each fat person, so that when they try to get in a fast food place they are zapped... that would be worth the fun value??
Maybe we could send you down David Tsubouchi to give the really important dirt on how to properly feed a family ...haggle the price of dented  tuna down to 69 c a can. He prepared a sample menu for those on welare (who were going to get a 22% cut in  benefits). Only problem was it was found to have less nutritional value than meals for those who were in jail.
Obesity is an issue in the westernworld, Canada, UK, Europe, Australia, etc etc, mandating what people can and cant eat, and forcing them to  excercise, should give the human rights commission a hard on.
Bloody ridiculous

I like the way you think.  Taking care of 4 problems with the same solution.  Obesity with the exercise, pollution with the human powered transport, jobs for those that are unemployed, and a legitimate way for those folks to get food other than fast food. Sheer genius

I am actually surprised there hasn't been more outcries from the folks that actually enjoy fast food, and are responsible enough to eat it in moderation.  Sign me up for one of those rickshaws, I like to exercise, and hell I can get a tan at the same time, do I have to be in poverty to qualify?
