If I was so addicted to a substance that it ruled my life to the point of social interactions.. I'd get my butt in rehab. (yes, I was a smoker an quit cold  turkey 20 years ago for that very reason).  I've no pity for smokers.  The only shame is that we have to legislate something because an activity is obnoxious.

I don't think that any of us are asking for your or anyone else's pity.  I just want people to leave me the fuck alone.  I enjoy smoking, and I'll quit when and if I feel like it.

Exactly, Slaveboy.  Not to mention the fact that I'm talking about being in MY OWN HOME.  If I go to someone Else's home - I abide by whatever rules they set for THEIR home.  If they're non-smokers, so be it, I won't light up while I'm IN Their home.  But frankly - if they expect me to abide by their rules of THEIR home, they OWE ME THE COURTESY of abiding by the rules of My home while visiting.  I don't demand that they allow me to smoke in thier home - that is their choice, and I owe them the respect of abiding by that choice when I visit.  They owe me the same respect.

Lotus - keep your pity.  And your holier-than-thou attitude.  And your lack of tolerance for differences.  Personally, I have no use for any of the 3.  Frankly - those who I allow in my home know my standards - my home : my rules; your home : your rules.  It doesn't stop my non-smoking friends from coming to visit, or from inviting me over to their homes to visit them.  My rules for my home certainly don't affect whether I go to various public places - be it parks, resturants, clubs, or the lake.  Parks and Lakes here in my state don't ban outside smoking.  Resturants do unless they have specific smokers' areas, clubs do if they serve food.  It's never bothered me to wait until I got outside of a resturant and back into my own car to smoke, if I feel like doing so.  When I'm outside at the park or lake - frankly - if you can smell my Cigarette smoke over and above the Campfire Smoke from grills or campfire rings, you're either imagining it because you're beyond anal, or you've got the best nose on the entire freaking planet!  If you allowed other people's whining to dictate what you did and didn't do - in your own home - you're more deserving of pity than those of us who still smoke.

One this I whole heartedly agree. I am another of those smokers who indulges in a habit which may/is harmful to my health. I will abide by the wishes of a non smoker when I am in their home, vehicle, etc as per their wishes. Though when it comes to my own home that I own from working my bloody ass ass off for, then it's my house and my rules.
Many of my friends are staunch non smokers and yet they remain friends with me simply because they have the common sense not let that be an issue in destroying a friendship built on trust and respect for me as a person.

I think these types of laws are too extreme.  Several of my roommates have been smokers and many of my friends.  They have all been courteous and civil enough to smoke outside and leave the butts in an ashtray or other container.

The larger drug stores also sell alcohol.  Prescription medications sold at pharmacies are often abused.  Why single out the sale of cigarettes in such a store?

Also, in California you need to show either a state driver's liscence or identification card proving that you are a legal adult, age 18 years or older.

One thing that just makes me scratch my head is the law against smoking in bars.  As if those sitting there guzzling down booze should be worried about second hand smoke when they go out, get into their cars, drunk and DRIVE HOME.  W T F ???

The only shame is that we have to legislate something because an activity is obnoxious.

....define obnoxious. Lots of things i find obnoxious. Some of those things you'll probably find obnoxious too. Some you wont. Ditto with your list of obnoxious things....some i'll agree with, some i wont.
What you appear to be arguing for is to legislate for taste. Now that's the thin end of the wedge that leads to the Fashion Police......for real.

You may have meant to suggest we ought to legislate against things that harm people instead. So let's legislate against bungee jumping. It's relatively high risk, but only harms the individual concerned. Clearly that's draconian, so we wont legislate against that after all. Now smokers are aware that their habit can harm others. So, the vast majority of us don't spark up around them. Legislate against second hand smoke? Maybe. That, at least, has a germ of logic about it......but ban people from smoking at home? That's clearly going too far.

My whole life I have never had anyone complain about second hand smoke coming from my Hawaain grown special weed.  Ok well they do when I forget to pass it

That argument would only work if for every couple of drinks you had you forced the bar staff to take a shot as well. (That would make an interesting night out!)
Its a lot easier I hear to hire bar staff now that smoking is banned in restaurants and bars here in Australia.
I love being able to go out and not coming home reeking of stale smoke on clothes, hair skin and with a sore throat from passive smoking.

As for not being allowed to smoke in your own home?
I haven't known a smoker here who smokes in their own house.
Everyone I know smokes outside because of the cumulative smell in furnishings. Who wants to live in a giant ashtray smell?
However if you wanted to I can't see why anyone else should care.

Why is it a problem inside a multi-apartment complex can someone tell me? I've never lived in one, do they share vents or something?

That is the one thing I think they will never attempt to ban... They may even start an ad campaign encouraging it.

If you're going to San Francisco
Be sure to take some joss sticks for the air
If you're going to San Francisco
You're going to meet lots of non-smokers there
All those who come to San Francisco
Will find it hard to find any cigarettes there
In the apartments in San Francisco
Lots of non-smokers just sit in the fresh air

All across the nation, such a wave of indignation
Supporting the smokers
There's a council in session, with a dumb explanation
Without a notion, without a notion

All those who come to San Francisco
Be sure to have some joss sticks for the air
If you come to San Francisco
You won't be smoking whilst you're there
If you come to San Francisco
Non-smokers will have apartments to share...

Aileen, they wouldn't do that of course, they're too anal retentive!
For a City that claims to be "Open-Minded" they've been "banning" a lot of things there in the last few years!
I think Freedom scares them.
They like the "Big Brother" crap it seems.
How can they claim to be "Liberal" and be afraid of so many things?
Aileen, sorry for the scare!
False Alarm!

...I had to jump in, because I LOVE San Francisco!
It is one of my newly adopted cities!

Belmont...is not in San Francisco, it is a city outside of San Francisco in the Bay area.

I left the Bay area about 2 weeks ago, and believe me, they are smoking everything there!
Plenty of doctors to get legal pot for medicinal use, etc.
San Francisco has to be one of the most liberal cities in the world, you would love it there Popeye!
I took pictures of some of the men that are now able to marry men, in City Hall.

.....I met my loves in Haight Ashbury.............
You certainly can smoke in certain areas/places/in your own home, in the city of San Francisco!
Did I mention I loveeeeeeee San Francisco?

There is one common denominator of SF, Chicago, and LA where they banned fast food places; the political party in charge. However since they are all with "good intent" or "for the children" who can argue. What is a little freedom and liberty lost in light of those arguments?

Yeah, I know.  I hate those damn Republicans too!

I was addicted to this monster.  I smoked two packs a day.  When I had major surgery, I could not get up to go outside, and quit.
Is it the government's responsibility to tell me I cannot smoke?  It depends. It depends upon rising health care costs that the government is having to pay for.
For them to tell me I have to quit, is another thing all together.
I do not like to go out to dinner and have somene smoking around me.  My slave smokes.  When I am there, he smokes outside of his own home.
The government may not have the right to tell you to smoke in your home or not, but your Dom/me does.

I used to be seriously in favour of smoking rights, hell, I was seriously in favour of smoking. But it PISSES ME OFF when my three step children turn up stinking to high heaven of cold stale tobacco. The youngest two have bad asthma and allergies. So what do the adults do in their home? Smoke. They smoke in the car when the children are with them. The children end up miserable, but hey, as long as the adults stay free to smoke, right?

I'm definitely not going to say that it should become illegal to smoke within one's own house, because it's a matter of personal choice, in my opinion: but seriously, I wish people would show some consideration to little kids who have no say where they live and who have to breathe in cigarettes day in, day out. When I want to smoke, I go outside - doesn't matter whether it's my home or not. It's a matter of respect for others.

Shame people can't fathom that simple idea.

I totally agree with you kittensol, adults should be more responsible, especially around
children.
This thread as so many others, is going in the usual 15 different directions.
I don't smoke cigarettes, I never did, but those that don't smoke certainly should have rights also.
I guess many adults are not responsible, which is why the town of Belmont is making the decision for them.

If  smoking restrictions had not been enacted by the gov't, it would have been much harder for me to quit when I did.
Watching a loved one take their last breath due to something so fucking stupid can certainly color your views.

Here is something I wrote last year about smoking that sums up my feelings on the subject. http://www.collarchat.com/fb.asp?m=1033004
