"The measure amends San Francisco's health code to prohibit tobacco sales in any pharmacy, whether a small mom-and-pop store or a large retailer like Walgreens. Drugstores caught selling tobacco products in the city will be fined up to $1,000."

actually, this is the most interesting part of the measure. ever since the Master Settlement Agreement was reached, Attorneys General in the various states (especially California) have been working on legislation such as this to force the sale of cigarettes to "tobacco shops" only. looks as though they are well on their way.
gas stations and liquor stores are next. it's only a matter of time.

There is one common denominator of SF, Chicago, and LA where they banned fast food places; the political party in charge. However since they are all with "good intent" or "for the children" who can argue. What is a little freedom and liberty lost in light of those arguments?

Yeah, I know.  I hate those damn Republicans too!

As do I however, you mistake my position as a matter of opinion.

The political party of every mayor and the majority of ruling city counsels represent themselves as Democrat. All these eliminations of personal choice, fast food to private residence behavior have been implemented in cities with a common political party in charge - Democrat. It appears their policy is that you can have all the freedom and liberty you want, as long as they approve it and think it is good.

As some have pointed out; in LA limiting fast food took priority over mass transit. In SF smoking was more important than the fact that their 'safe-haven' policy regarding illegal aliens got a family killed. Death brought to you by 'good intent' and the party of "change".

Damn BSB, that was a powerful read. Thanks. I am so sorry you had to go throught that.

If  smoking restrictions had not been enacted by the gov't, it would have been much harder for me to quit when I did.
Watching a loved one take their last breath due to something so fucking stupid can certainly color your views.

Here is something I wrote last year about smoking that sums up my feelings on the subject. http://www.collarchat.com/fb.asp?m=1033004

....and this would be worse than death brought to you by those who oppose health care for those who can't afford to pay for it?

More than usually polemic there, Merc........

Here's the problem Philo; whether a comment is addressed to Senator Obama specifically, the Democratic party in general, or a specific issue such as this; every response is a comparison to more failure. I take that to mean that the point is correct, and the distraction becomes an attempt to mute it. There is no response or counter point to be made. Instead some other failing is given as a contrast in an attempt to take away the point of the original point.

Based upon what I've seen and read it seems to be a tactic encouraged by both parties. So now "good intent", "what about the children", and "yeah but it's not as bad as..." become acceptable platform planks.

Absolutely ridiculous and I won't involve myself in any argument of that type. A firm crap or diarrhea, the comparison is irrelevant - both smell and are still SHIT.

...i can see that. It's an easy thing to do. Not necessarily edifying, but easy.

.....which is, more or less, what i'm calling you on Merc. Instead of dissecting why these city councils are doing these things, you merely note they're mostly Democrat and compare them to bringers of death. Also not edifying.

...if such semantics are the only plank then they're bogus. Thing is, as part of an overall strategy they're reasonable things. Are you seriously suggesting that good intent is no better than evil intent? Are you seriously suggesting that public policy should specifially discount the needs of children? Of course not. They are acceptable platform planks....just shouldn't be the only planks.

.....well, to labour the metaphor, one is an indication of good digestive health and one isn't. Those not willing to monitor shit will, inevitably, miss the warning signs of ill-health.

In any two party system, you are going to get comparitive politics, inevitably. The only way you're ever going to get past that is to lose the two party system.
