Thank you, mike - it was my intention to ignore Heretic's rudeness, but it's very kind of you to make this point. Apparently, it would be absolutely fine if I were to tow the Republican party's line and waxed lyrical over all things military (note: I asked questions that are to do with the dead soldier's humanity and his right to be treated with dignity, in death, at least).

I've never understood this kind of thinking: when I'm in my countries of citizenship, I don't mind that foreigners express their opinions - in fact, I welcome it. It's all good: with spousal permission to express myself freely, I fully intend on making the most of the First Amendment :-).
As is Your right and indeed your duty as a future citizen

You'll notice I said "shouldn't," Mike.  As in, "innapropriate behavior."  As in, "this is a touchy issue foor some, and you have no idea what you are talking about."  Get off the big white horsey.

Then we have the further insult of throwing in a previously unmentioned factoid to get shrieky about, ie, that the soldier was killed in late June, without mentioning the incident at the bank occurred on July, 1.

Kitten:  My comments were rude?  I'm a switch, Love.  I give what I get.  If you want to turn dead soldiers into a bullshit ad hominem against my nation, please use the ones wearing the colors of whatever it says on your passport.

Oh my god, this is so fucked up: enjoy your jingoistic festival, Heretic.

Me, I hope that dead man finds peace somewhere, somehow. If you wanted nothing but affirmation, you ought not to have posted on these boards.

Incidentally... you forget that 'your' nation is my loved ones' nation too. Things aren't always as simple as the colour of a passport.

WTF...Heretic I don't care if you stuck "shouldn't" in there or not, giving you the benifit of the doubt I just reread the young Lady's post and still can't see what got your panties in a twist...She asked letgitimate questions and in no way used dead soldiers as an attack against your country...as a matter of fact she was asking why that soldier, having given his life for his country wasn't being afforded more dignity....but your panties were in such a twist ,you didn't see that...so maybe you get off your high horse of no discriminite color and untwist your panties huh!

While I don't agree with jumping down her throat like that, you have to admit, she did use the thread as another chance to attack the US. But then again, she does that in most posts, so maybe he should just learn to ignore her.

Here is what I don't understand: isn't it the duty of the military to bury its own soldiers? Shouldn't they provide direct assistance to the family (even if they have to withold some of the funds afterwards, stingy bastards that they are?)

To answer your question Kittin, which doesn't appear to have been answered......The military does provide money for the family, which happened here.  Also they will provide an honor guard and full military honors if the family requests it.  The military won't overstep the wishes of the family in these matters, which I think is a good thing.  I don't why a month went by to get the body.  I imagine that has something to do with logistics.

kittinSol -> RE: Bank Refuses To Cash Gov't Checks For Afghanistan KIA Funeral (7/31/2008 7:17:44 PM)

Bullshit. But what would you know? You don't know me.

kittinSol -> RE: Bank Refuses To Cash Gov't Checks For Afghanistan KIA Funeral (7/31/2008 7:21:33 PM)

Thanks, slaveboy - regardless of anybody's feelings with regards to this war... those who die deserve decent burial.

As I said a legitimate question, asked for all the right reasons.....

Yall should really settle down. I thought we were talking about cashing a goddamn check.

Back to the topic.

I'm surprised there isn't a better way to disburse the funds to families. Couldn't the government wire it into folks' accounts?

Eta: Or do direct deposit, as with tax refunds?

I've wondered that myself.  I don't remember the last time I received a paper check for pay.  It's all been through direct deposit, and I love it.  It seems like the Feds could offer something similar to family when it comes to paying out benefits.

dcnovice -> RE: Bank Refuses To Cash Gov't Checks For Afghanistan KIA Funeral (7/31/2008 7:42:27 PM)

Could they send cashier's checks?

Same here.

slvemike4u -> RE: Bank Refuses To Cash Gov't Checks For Afghanistan KIA Funeral (7/31/2008 7:46:46 PM)

DC I'm not trying to be funny here really but wouldn't provisions have to be set up before hand for that sort of direct deposit plan.If so I'm wondering how many might believe that to be some sort of self fulfilling bugaboo...don't think if I was facing a deployment I would tempt fate by making arrangements for the disbursal of death benefits....I know they have to fill out forms and name assignments for those benefits, but to actually set up a direct deposit plan might be spooky

dcnovice -> RE: Bank Refuses To Cash Gov't Checks For Afghanistan KIA Funeral (7/31/2008 7:49:31 PM)

Mike, I was thinking they'd make the arrangements afterwards with the family. They could have forms available online. All the family would have to do is print it, attach a voided check, and turn it in. It would be a decent touch if the Post Office would comp the Express Mail delivery.

Thadius -> RE: Bank Refuses To Cash Gov't Checks For Afghanistan KIA Funeral (7/31/2008 7:50:06 PM)

When I was in, and the last time I filled out those wonderful forms... direct deposit was not an option for the policy.  The only real option that was on the SGLI was being able to choose who would receive what... (divided amongst 2 or more people if one chose).

So then you'll be encouraging the ___'s to enlist to support and defend the Constitution of these United States?

If you want to question how the US military handles those who die in action, please read the whole article first.

End slightly annoyed rant from veteran.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Bank Refuses To Cash Gov't Checks For Afghanistan KIA Funeral (7/31/2008 7:52:22 PM)

Well Mike that would be up to each individual soldier.  I don't find anything spooky about setting up a direct deposit plan like that.  While filling out your next of kin info, you simply add a bank account number next to the name.  I don't see what the problem would be.

Thadius -> RE: Bank Refuses To Cash Gov't Checks For Afghanistan KIA Funeral (7/31/2008 7:55:34 PM)

I am not sure regular insurance policies have this option.  I could be wrong.
