The best place to look is at a university library for such things.

You will be unlikely to find them under "BDSM" however. You'll have to try more clinical and psychological terms.

Most of what I have seen (sorry I don't references, just my memories right now) is very limited in scope (college age men are the most common group followed by those in therapy), examines via self-reported surveys of kink groups, looks at for-money exchanges, and plays fast and loose with historical data.

I have not been that impressed thus far.

But what can we expect when it is still so taboo and so many of us make sure we keep this part of our lives separate from other parts?

Its like studying only gay bars to understand homosexuality. Until folks are comfortable enough to volunteer, only those on the edges will be viewed. Relying on self-reported surveys raises other concerns. But then all research has problems, part of the reason repeat, revise, and have multiple studies I guess.

I know there have been multiple done in relation to sexual/gender dynamics and bdsm culture and relationships.

Unfortunatly, I can't pull up any spesifics. I don't have access to a university library anymore.

Get thee to a library! The research is easy to do.

You may be interested in using a different genre to support your academic perspective on BDSM, such as popular literature. For one, a thesis available at Middle Tennessee State University entitled "Queers, Freaks, Hunchbacks, and Hermaphrodites: Psychosocial and Sexual Behavior in the Novels of Carson McCullers" utilizes QUEER THEORY and provides many great resources. It is written by Dr. Judith Russell and, although she is not active in the lifestyle, her writing is sympathetic and empirically supported. Her discussion includes the construction of "the other" and the beauty of what is often considered "grotesque" in our society.

Good luck.

I don't think these are exactly what you're looking for, but they are serious books. I believe Cowan's book started life as a Master's or Doctoral thesis, and I'm sure Moore's bibliography would be worth the price of the book.

Masochism: A Jungian View, by Lyn Cowan

Dark Eros: The Imagination of Sadism, by Thomas Moore

Both of them are written from the perspective of depth/analytical psychology, with lots of historical/mythological context.

Many thanks but it cannot be the only thesis out there...

LadyAngelika -> RE: Academic theses on the BDSM lifestyle (11/17/2005 8:52:24 PM)

You can always consult the ProQuest Digital Dissertations database. There you can find digital copies of theses and dissertations.

If you are a student in a College or University, you most likely already have access. If not, go to the nearest College or University library and you should be able to access this database.

Hope this is helpful.

It was a great article.

I am looking for academic articles and information about BDSM life for a long time, especially groups or communities in universities.

As I living in Australia I searched all subjects and courses in Universities in Melbourne and Sydney and I could not find any thing related to BDSM.

As I am interested in research about BDSM I will appreciate any help to find some resources, academic courses or groups.

subaltern1 -> RE: Academic theses on the BDSM lifestyle (11/18/2005 3:33:28 AM)

Hi aa
I am a sydneysider and I know there are some cited in the History of the Gay Community in Australia. I think it was by Graham Willets, and would have been late 1990s. You should look under fetish and all possible imaginable terms as many are listed simply as "alternative lifestyles" rather than BDSM or polyamorous, etc.
There are a number of anthro theses on the later listed in the Mitchell Library.
What have you found so far ?

I believe he has said that he's on faculty. That's why this query has surprised me.

subaltern1 -> RE: Academic theses on the BDSM lifestyle (11/18/2005 3:55:56 AM)

ah, well, I emailed him and he is on Faculty......but would prefer not to use University-monitored machines as he wasy saying there was a Professor of Anthropology who was recently done for "accessing porn" when in fact this
guy's subject area is Tongan sexuality. It is a bit lazy though, though I guess
there might be a pool of knowledge here that might make searching further much easier.....have you come across any academic stuff in the US ?

siamsa24 -> RE: Academic theses on the BDSM lifestyle (11/18/2005 5:32:21 AM)

There are tons of references out there, and you don't have to use your computer to search terms such as "BDSM"
Use the computer to search more academic terms "human sexuality", "fetish" and other terms like that. Generally, as long as you are doing research anyone investigating will be able to tell. Besides, just use a laptop on the wireless connection and no one will be the wiser (this is assuming, of course, that your campus has wireless internet)

Jacques1000 -> RE: Academic theses on the BDSM lifestyle (11/18/2005 5:42:58 AM)

Hi
it is not really the searching that will be difficult--I just though people might know of some off the bat...thanks.

You'd be surprised John. Having worked in academia, I see pretty clueless faculty now and then. Some of them would be lost without their research assistants.

But you are right, it does make one wonder...

I believe Master Burt, of Arizona, did his doctoral thesis on the lifestyle. I'm not sure how to contact him, as we've only spoken once a couple years ago, but I believe he's still a member of APEx (Arizona Power Exchange) in Phoenix.
