Gwynvyd -> Poems, ideas, and sayings important to us (8/1/2008 5:32:21 PM)

Here is one I have kept close to me for years. It reminds me when I feel at my worst that I have a better path.

After a while you learn the subtle difference between holding a hand and chaining a soul
And you learn the love doesn't mean leaning and company doesn't mean security
And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts and presents aren't promises
And you begin to accept your defeats with your head up and your eyes ahead, with the grace of a woman not the grief of a child, and learn to build all your roads on today because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain for plans and futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight.
After awhile you learn that even sunshine burns if you ask too much.
So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure...
that you really are strong and you really do have worth.
And you learn and learn...
with every goodbye you learn.

From "Ash Wednesday" by T.S. Eliot:

Suffer us not to mock ourselves with falsehood
Teach us to care and not to care
Teach us to sit still
Even among these rocks,
Our peace in His will
And even among these rocks
Sister, mother
And spirit of the river, spirit of the sea,
Suffer me not to be separated

And let my cry come unto Thee.

There are many but this is written by a man, Cylan Thomas, and with it comes an exposition of his relationship with his father and what it is to be a man, i believe. It has helped me....

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

And currently one re-visited by the late great Sylvia Plath.....visionary, and on the edge....
Wuthering Heights
Sylvia Plath

The horizons ring me like faggots,
Tilted and disparate, and always unstable.
Touched by a match, they might warm me,
And their fine lines singe
The air to orange
Before the distances they pin evaporate,
Weighting the pale sky with a soldier color.
But they only dissolve and dissolve
Like a series of promises, as I step forward.

There is no life higher than the grasstops
Or the hearts of sheep, and the wind
Pours by like destiny, bending
Everything in one direction.
I can feel it trying
To funnel my heat away.
If I pay the roots of the heather
Too close attention, they will invite me
To whiten my bones among them.

The sheep know where they are,
Browsing in their dirty wool-clouds,
Gray as the weather.
The black slots of their pupils take me in.
It is like being mailed into space,
A thin, silly message.
They stand about in grandmotherly disguise,
All wig curls and yellow teeth
And hard, marbly baas.

I come to wheel ruts, and water
Limpid as the solitudes
That flee through my fingers.
Hollow doorsteps go from grass to grass;
Lintel and sill have unhinged themselves.
Of people and the air only
Remembers a few odd syllables.
It rehearses them moaningly:
Black stone, black stone.

The sky leans on me, me, the one upright
Among all horizontals.
The grass is beating its head distractedly.
It is too delicate
For a life in such company;
Darkness terrifies it.
Now, in valleys narrow
And black as purses, the house lights
Gleam like small change.

Ans one by a man about the essence of woman...Suzanne by Leonard Cohen....(sung in a version by Aretha Franklin it is the most awesome version I have ever heard)

Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.
And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"
But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body with his mind.

Now Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On our lady of the harbour
And she shows you where to look
Among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her
For she's touched your perfect body with her mind.

You got me on a roll.....
No Man Is An Island (based on John Donne) Lyrics by Joan Baez No man is an island,
No man stands alone,
Each man's joy is joy to me,
Each man's grief is my own.

We need one another,
So I will defend,
Each man as my brother,
Each man as my friend.

I saw the people gather,
I heard the music start,
The song that they were singing,
Is ringing in my heart.

No man is an island,
Way out in the blue,
We all look to the one above,
For our strength to renew.

When I help my brother,
Then I know that I,
Plant the seed of friendship,
That will never die.

ok going to try to sleep now but these are well sooooo yummy....
Slave to Love
Bryan ferry

Tell her i´ll be waiting
In the usual place
With the tired and weary
There´s no escape
To need a woman
You´ve got to know
How the strong get weak
And the rich get poor
You´re running with me
Don´t touch the ground
We´re restless hearted
Not the chained and bound
The sky is burning
A sea of flame
Though your world is changing
I will be the same
The storm is breaking
Or so it seems
We´re too young to reason
Too grown up to dream
Now spring is turning
Your face to mine
I can hear your laughter
I can see your smile
No I can´t escape
I´m a slave to love

Woman must not accept; she must challenge. She must not be awed by that which has been built up around her; she must reverence that woman in her which struggles for expression. - Margaret Sanger  This one hangs above my bed in a cross stitch

I was just corrected on who wrote the poem I submitted for ya'll to see.
Actualy I didnt know who wrote it.. a woman with a hand written copy came into my copy shop years ago asking to have it copied severial times. She mentioned she was a writer after I asked if I could keep a copy for myself.. and if she had any other poetry out there. Unfortunatly I never got her name. Appearently she was Veronica A. Shoffstall

Thanks to the one who pointed this out.. I need to look for her other work.

One that touches home for Me :

"Transcending your sexuality To become more spiritual is An Enlightenment illusion.
When God touches your Heart, Your sexuality is awakened.
Your body lights up and Your life lightens up."

A bit of Dorothy Parker for those shadowed moments:

Razors pain you,
Rivers are damp,
Acids stain you,
And drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren't lawful,
Nooses give,
Gas smells awful.
You might as well live

Fall in love, or fall in hate.  Get inspired, or be depressed.  Ace a test, or flunk a class.  Make babies, or make art.  Speak the truth, or lie and cheat.  Dance on tables, or sit in the corner.  Life is divine chaos.  Embrace it.  Forgive yourself.  Breathe.  And enjoy the ride... - Solbeam.

Be the kinda woman that when your feet hit the floor in the morning the Devil says "Oh shit, shes awake..."

Behind every bitch, theres a man that made her that way, and another that will love her that way.

Oscar Wilde:
A man who does not think for himself does not think at all.

As long as war is regarded as wicked, it will always have its fascination. When it is looked upon as vulgar, it will cease to be popular.

Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead.

Life is never fair, and perhaps it is a good thing for most of us that it is not.

Nothing can cure the soul but the senses, just as nothing can cure the senses but the soul.

Ok, I'll stop now...LOL

[&o]  Sounds kinda silly compared to all the wise and philosophical words above but the words that I carry deep inside me are:

"This too shall pass.... This too shall pass."  Wise old dinosaur in the original Land Before Time

I totaly agree with that!

You would prob. enjoy the teaching of Rumi. He taught that God gave us our sensuality so that we can be closer to each other, and to God.
