What might work great for New York or Boston or Baltimore of Philli is utterly USELESS here in Oklahoma or Texas or Arkansas or Kansas or New Mexico... .or practically anywhere Other than the East Coast.

There's great public transit in a lot of the country that isn't by any stretch of the imagination East Coast. Chicago has an integrated system that is one of the best anywhere. San Francisco and the rest of the Bay Area has BART. LA's subway isn't terrific but what there is is reportedly in heavy use and the bus system has always been very effective. Seattle has tried some novel ideas, free bus rides downtown during the business day for example. Portland Oregon has also tried some innovative stuff, free to use yellow bikes for a while, and has a good mix of light rail and bus service. And those are just the ones I'm directly familiar with.

and again you guys quote out of context... he said he could possibly get behind some offshore drilling, if it is done in a careful, thought out, eco safe way....

Christ... pathetic!

So now you're all jiggy with it, where earlier today anyone who thought that way was pure evil.

What did you think that Conservatives wanted. Tar-covered beaches?

Face facts, Obama's got to abandon the fringe elements or face losing by a landslide.

Ah, I see the difference you are making now, the folks bought out by the big oil companies are suggesting that we do it haphazzardly, on a whim, and as messy as possible.

St. Obama, leads us to the promised land again, and of course his way will bring prices down more than $.04 a gallon, and be available faster than in 10 years, and won't lead to the destruction of communities that depend on tourism.

I wonder how many folks saw the debate yesterday about at what point does it become reasonable to allow drilling... It opened my eyes.

P.S. Still waiting for you to provide proof of those in favor of allowing drilling being bought off by big oil.

So maybe that's it - Exxon's used some of its horribly evil record profits to buy Obama. I wonder why that hasn't occurred to any of the Left-leaning crowds around here yet - after all, how long would it have taken them to lay that very conspiracy theory at the feet of John McCain?

Now that is just crazy.  Democrats do not take bribes (they just hang out with folks that do the bribing), or change their positions (they are for it, before they vote against it).  Obama clearly has always felt this way, he just wanted to wait until it was becoming a crisis before he lead us to the one true way to do things.

From The Guardian, a UK paper, circa 2002

"US and oil lobby oust climate change scientist"

Julian Borger in Washington
The Guardian
Saturday, April 20, 2002

"The head of the international scientific panel on climate change, which has called for urgent action to curb global warming, was deposed yesterday after a campaign by the Bush administration, Exxon-Mobil and other energy companies to get him replaced.

At a plenary session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in Geneva, Robert Watson, a British-born US atmospheric scientist who has been its chairman since 1996, was replaced by an Indian railway engineer and environmentalist, R K Pachauri.

Dr Pachauri received 76 votes to Dr Watson's 49 after a behind-the-scenes diplomatic campaign by the US to persuade developing countries to vote against Dr Watson, according to diplomats. The British delegation argued for Dr Watson and Dr Pachauri to share the chairmanship.

The US campaign came to light after the disclosure of a confidential memorandum from the world's biggest oil company, Exxon-Mobil, to the White House, proposing a strategy for his removal."

And from The Washington Post, May 9, 2008

"Oil Lobby Reaches Out to Citizens Peeved at the Pump"

"The oil and gas industry has long been considered a powerhouse in Washington, thanks to its big spending inside the Beltway and quietly extensive ties to influential lawmakers from the oil patch. The industry is the third-largest campaign contributor among major industry groups and the fourth-largest buyer of lobbying services, according to the nonpartisan CQ MoneyLine.

The industry has lobbied Congress intensively in the past few years, institute officials said. But such insider connections were insufficient to hold back an anti-industry tide that rolled into the capital after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005. Energy prices spiked then, prompting a spate of congressional hearings that focused on oil company profits and led to attempts to pass a windfall profits tax.

"That was a wake-up call," Cavaney said. His organization began to research public opinion about, and knowledge of, the industry and found it extremely low. In response, it began a national advertising and public relations drive that has become among the largest of its kind.

This has been especially visible to residents of big cities this year, with prominent ads appearing in major newspapers and commercials during public affairs television."

Without viewing the whole of that speech, or witnessing his entire campaign, I am willing to say this.

If all of the approximately sixty two million registered vehicles in the United States were to recieve routine preventative maintenance, including tire rotations air pressure adjustments, filter cleaning/replacement, timing fine-tuning, belt replacement, oil replacement, et cetera, et cetera...

I'd wonder who was paying for it.

It would be a more reasonable approach for the government to hand out a couple hundred million 70MPG Vespas.

Ven, this is only one of ten thousand reasons why Lobbyists should be outlawed!
The only "lobbyists" that there should be are the American People!
Perhaps I'll start a thread on that.
