LadybugBlue -> What it is that we WEAR (8/3/2008 10:12:32 AM)

So, a friend of mine, who happens to be sub, and I were discussing clothing and what to wear to a local party a few weeks back, and we both noticed that black seems to be a very popular color to wear, accented with red/blue.  I've even noticed that my personal "fun" wardrobe is mostly black.

But why?  Is it the image of the bad boy/girl in black beating someone up that's erotic?  That scary man/woman in black leering at you?  Because, to be honest, I personally would be more afraid of someone all in baby pink and bows with a pink flogger with ribbons on it...  Is it that black is just a physically complimentary color on all bodies?

Or is it a self-perpetuating loop, where W/we buy black scenewear because it's available, and more black scenewear is made because it is what sells?

Thoughts?

Most of my wardrobe is black, because its easy to wear, easy to accessorize, and it just has a way of making me look hot.

I think it's a two pronged answer :D

One, black when going out on the town is a popular colour and always has been, think "the little black dress" and black suits.

Two, most people wear black because it's the easiest colour to get, for every 100 fetish wear items out there, 98 are yes going to be black.

Also, some BDSM gatherings with attire requirements actually specify "all black" as an accepted form of dress.

LadyTeazer -> RE: What it is that we WEAR (8/3/2008 4:18:45 PM)

I am about as far from a "Fashionista" as one can possibly get.   When deciding what color to wear to almost any function or situation, "basic black" is often the first choice.  You really can't go wrong with it  (even to wear it to a wedding anymore), it is easy to accessorize, and it can easily be dressed up or dressed down.  It is flattering to many skin and hair color combinations, it hides or minimizes figure "flaws", and one can find a multitude of clothing and accessory items in black without any problem.

I do not see the color black as particularly erotic.   I do not perceive someone dressed in black as scary, or intimidating, or as being a bad boy/girl .  When in a BDSM setting, black seems to be the "only" color to wear.   I see so much of it that it has become a cliche to me, and boring as hell.   I choose  *not*  to wear fetish clothing for a number of reasons, but if I ever did,  it damn sure would not be anything in black.

Yeah, yeah.  I know I'm wearing black in My pic here.  But on Me, it is a flattering color.  And I am wearing regular clothes, not fetish stuff.

I like bright striking colors crafted into interesting patterns.

I never was one for the conformist ideal of brown or black.

Let them be the background I blaze upon instead.;)

LaTigresse -> RE: What it is that we WEAR (8/3/2008 7:07:53 PM)

I wear whatever my mood and the occasion dictates I gravitate to. Usually colours of nature....greens and browns being most common.

UmbraDomina -> RE: What it is that we WEAR (8/4/2008 6:35:18 AM)

It truely depends on my mood, and setting. In the "nilla world" I often look like a business woman, or a odd mix of beachbum/hippy. I tend to wear colors, lots of them, and very rarely wear all black, although I do have the black power suit, and the ever popular little black dress. Now if I am going to a fetish event/play party, yes I tend to wear black.... often becouse 98% of the fetish wear comes in black. Every now and again I like to shake things up, the last play party I attended, I wore white, with black. A white well starched white mens button up shirt, with a red power tie, and black thigh high stilletto boots.
I understand that play parties tend to have dress codes, to help keep the mood and all, part of the fantasy.

I have a lot of black clothes... mostly because they are much easier for mix and match outfits.  But I love to toss some color into it.  Red is also somewhat 'expected'.  Dark greens go well with my hair.  Hot pink is just to fun.  In fact, I'm working on a hot pink, metallic leather corset.

Lynnxz -> RE: What it is that we WEAR (8/4/2008 10:02:21 AM)

My fetish stuff is mostly black- simply because I can't FIND anything in better colors.

A few years ago, I was playing with someone who wore all black every time I saw him.  I did a Kafka scene modeled on "Inside the Penal Colony" where I used a violet wand and a poultry skewer to etch "black is not the only color" into the bottom's back.  The scene was finished when he was able to read what I'd written by feel alone.

tweedydaddy -> RE: What it is that we WEAR (9/26/2008 2:38:07 AM)

Black means authority. Black is slimming, Black means bad. Black is soothing to the eyes. Black is archetypally sexy.

GabrielleSlave -> RE: What it is that we WEAR (9/26/2008 2:47:57 AM)

I remember Master asking me when we first met if i wore much black. The answer was no (which is what he'd wanted to hear) due to having a long white haired dog! This still applies over four years later so reds a favourite colour for me. I'm not really sure why Master wasn't keen on black i myust try to remember and ask him.

MistressSassy66 -> RE: What it is that we WEAR (9/26/2008 3:20:16 PM)

Black and Red are colors I like. Its is much easier
to mix any color with black.
I like to wear slips and girdles(that are not tight) with tights and black
boots or bare legs/feet for Dungeon wear, its soft
comfortable its great for when the scene heats up
leather etc holds in the heat more,I like to be comfy or
I just cant concentrate.I like to Smother submissives for
breath play scenes, wearing soft slips makes it feel good
on the skin it adds the element of sensation to the scene.

Sometimes I'll wear a vinyl/leather fetish top/skirt over the girdles
and tights.I'll wear a lacey bra under tops that are netting.I
guess I have a thing for under garments,LOL
I like to be covered up,it adds to the imagination.

Rogue86 -> RE: What it is that we WEAR (9/27/2008 12:55:36 AM)

First and foremost, I just like black.  Many of us do, it is a sensual color and shows nicely against most skin tones.

Also, within the gay leather scene the wearing of leathers in black was born from the biker culture, the rebel, the uber-masculine stereotype that was fetishized and incorporated into "rough sex."  The modern BDSM movement took many (though certainly not all!) of its early cues from gay leather culture, and the wearing of black and all that has come to mean just sorta stuck in our subconscious mind, and became an archetype.

Things are changing, though. It's easier for women.  Few would deny that a Domme in a purple corset and boots is still beautiful and intimidating.  Try putting a Dom in purple leather 501's, harness, and boots and see if the same reaction holds true!  Ryan Seacrest aside, the days of the peacock are gone and they don't seem to be coming back anytime soon - at least, not for most of us in the life.

Of course there are exceptions.  There always have been - regardless of what "They" say - and there always will be.  Not everyone fetishizes the same thing.  Within the gay community there is a growing group of kinksters who are all about 'sports kit' and spandex and Woah! Look at all the pretty colors!  Some things change slowly.  As for me, I'll stick with black and blue.

Black is a wonderful, and truly essential color.

But if a man goes for a good patterned, or solid (lighter) color, 'I'm lovin it' and want to know how much it costs for one of THOSE.

I don't like wearing only black too often. I don't like seeing only black too often. I really love some of the more 'royal' shades in all their glory (especially blue) and I think that a man that can truly accomplish color can take down anything :D

That may be an exaggeration on my part, but you do have to admit... a person can either pull off a color/cut/style/type of clothing or they can't. They can work to get there... but it's WORK.

Unfortunately for me a grand majority of shirts and pants that will fit me are actually in a very short array (unless I want to buy 'ethnic' clothing and look like a white boy trying to be ghetto) of color... usually Black, Gray, White, or Dark Blue for shirts, Jeans, Black slacks, Khakis for pants.

Anything I have not in those colors... I spent extra money on so that I could have variety :(

DMFParadox -> RE: What it is that we WEAR (9/27/2008 11:01:04 AM)

Jeans and T-shirts with funny slogans. I may be a Dom, but I'm a computer geek first and worst. THAT is my fashion statement.

Although I do have a few pairs of bondage pants, torn black upper-body whatnots and metallic accessories for those occasions that call for them. But they generally stay buried.

Ialdabaoth -> RE: What it is that we WEAR (9/27/2008 1:02:32 PM)

Interestingly enough, my "play" outfit is all white. It certainly stands out in a crowd of black with a few spots of red. :)
