msprudence -> Silk Rope Suppliers? (8/4/2008 11:27:45 AM)

My silk rope supplier has doubled their price...

Does anyone else have resources for finding Silk Rope?  I love it because there are no scratchy bits- it's soft and nice, and someone can be bound comfortable with it for hours without there being an issue.

I hope you do find a good supplier.  I've avoided buying hemp or jute because I play with a lot of people and wash my rope every time I use it on someone, and those fibers wouldn't hold up to all the washing.  Also, I went to a shibari class at ThunderintheMountains recently (Suzanne Sxysadist - fantastic presenter!) and she had some silk.  I liked the texture and look of it and thought I'd start shopping around for some, but I gather it's hella expensive.

I hope your not planning suspensions with silk rope. Silk rope is entierly too slippery for that.

If you read the quote, it seems they HAVE been using it for whatever purpose they find entertaining, and are simply looking for another supplier.

http://www.butterflyrope.com/   <~~ hand made with care lots of pretty colors to choose from I have gotten purple from them. You can even have the rope custom made depending on how you want it woven/twisted. it is expensive but worth it.

I don't do suspension...  But silk rope can be used for suspension... if you use the right knots.

Thats the same stuff that twisted monk sells I believe.  I have felt it and I was very surprised at how non-slippery it is.  It has quite a bit of bite to it considering what most people would think of as "silk rope".  Its less slippery than nylon from what I remember, and people use that for suspension all the time.

MY experience with the butterfly rope is that is is MUCH grippier than hemp.  The biggest concern you need to have with it is it is spun looser, so knots can get VERY tight.  It also has a lot of stretch to it, so it "bounces".

You can do suspension with any type of rope.  Different materials require different knots and different ties, but there's nothing magical about using hemp (or jute or whatever) for suspension.

All that being said, Butterfly herself typically uses silk body ties with hemp support lines. (I would guess because of the tightness of the resulting knots, even a slippery taut line can be rough in that silk)

The Twisted Monk (http://www.twistedmonk.com/) does sell the Madame Butterfly's rope.  I ordered 15 feet from them to try it out, and if it works (and become something my toys want), than I'm place one of the 90 feet minimum order from Butterfly.
