So.... I've been working my butt off (and working my contractor like a $2 whore, according to him LMAO) to get the backyard project at least mostly completed.  The deck is up, the fence is up, the various overgrowth of weeds and small tress has been removed, the water feature has been decided on.

Now comes the Difficult part for me, and I'd like some input from others who might have experience dealing with various... ehem... backyard projects.  It's time for me to start making a final decision on the Hot Tub that's going on the back deck, and damnit - I CAN'T MAKE UP MY MIND!!!!!!!!

4-5 person?  7 person?  2-3 person?  lots of jets or just a few?  Automated water purification system or not?  GACK - how do I make up my mind????   Prices are ranging anywhere from $1500 to $10K, depending on size, style, number of jets, and how many "extras" come standard.  I want to keep things in a reasonable price range (as if any decent hot tub is the least bit Reasonable in this sort of ecomony, right?)

Are the automated purification systems worth it, price vs ease of maintainence, or is it a rip off?  That's one of the big decisions that I'm trying to make on this, cause I have absolutely Zero experience with maintaining a pool or spa.

Anyway - if any of you happen to have any personal experience dealing with this sort of decision making - HELP.

the only thing i can say is...there can never be too many jets!  even if you're in the hot tub alone rofl!

The trick to maintaining a pool or spa is to do it regularly. If you can't spare 5 minutes at least every other day, then try something automatic. It's a LOT easier to keep the water in balance than it is to fix it once it's gotten screwed up.

The "how many people" decision depends on your social life... i'm out of that one [8D] You want to make sure that however many people you expect to get into the tub on a regular basis have room to move around, and aren't just stuck sitting bolt upright.

You definitely want all the jets you can get.

Avoid built-in frippery- light shows, stereos, etc. They're overpriced, and it's generally harder and more expensive to fix something built-in than something stand-alone.

Invest in a good cover that fits properly and is easy to remove and replace.

Have fun!

If it's just a 5 minute every couple of days thing to maintain the water - that's not a biggie.  Working from home gives me that advantage - I CAN step out on the deck while I'm waiting for something to finish processing and take care of stuff like that.

Social life?  Ummmmmmmmmmm...... what's that? LMAO.  All kidding aside, there's really not that many people that I can think of - that actually live close enough to stop by my place more than twice a year - that I allow to visit here regularly.  (I freely admit - one of the multitude of reasons that I want a hot tub is to try and improve at least Some aspects of my social life lolol)

All of the units that I've been looking at, regardless of price or size variances, come with covers.  That's something that I figured was a necessity - simply to keep from constantly having to pull debris outta the water, since it Will be outside on a deck.  While the built in stereo looks nice - I did some comparison pricing on getting one of the optional stereo systems built in vs just buying an all weather radio like I use for camping.  They don't look pretty, but they're functional as hell, and I can get a really Nice one for under $30 as opposed to it being a $700 Option on one of the hot tubs I'm considering!  Yeahhh......... face it.... that other $670 goes a long way towards steaks and tequilla.

Christine - you are undoubtedly Correct in the "no such thing as to many jets" LOL.  The more the better, as long as it doesn't end up causing a serious price spike!
