i can relate to this, to some extent.. Though mostly with Raven, He will give me a task and i am free to go about it any way i wish.. So long as i either present Him with the required result within the time alotted.. Or have a valid reason as to why it hasn't been done within His time frame & can show Him that i have given it 100% effort.
If He feels the need to micro-manage the task and there are specific instructions on how He wants me to do it, i will follow them to the letter.. But that doesn't happen very often.

As far as i'm concerned, there is no time when disobeying His wishes would be justified by any decision i would make.. But then, Our Dynamic does not entitle me to making decisions at all..
If i had done that i would feel terrible.. But if its not such a big deal to him, don't beat yourself up about it! *smiles* Thats his job remember [;)]

I encourage mine to say such things in the form of...

Yes Master, but.... [insert reasoning here]

In this way, her commitment to obedience and her role is stated right up front, but I still get whatever piece of information she thought I ought to have (and I very much trust her judgement on such things...  If she thinks it was important for me to hear, then it normally is and frequently ThePlan(tm) is modified in some fashion.).

To your specific story, I don't see anything wrong here other than inadequate communication which happens to the best of us.  But to me, at least, your actions and motivations both seem perfectly reasonable.
