BitaTruble -> Adventures in Europe: BitaCriminal Activity! (8/8/2008 10:28:40 AM)

Now that the jet lag is gone .. let me start off by saying that I absolutely adored Lisbon! I felt very connected to both the culture and the (amazingly friendly) people and my (rather broken) Portuguese actually came in handy a few times while we visted. Himself was equally infatuated with Algarve although it was a bit too touristy for my taste. It seems as though it's lost much of the flavor of the country in an effort to cater to a (mostly British) visitors population. We might as well have been in South Beach or some place like that as far as I'm concerned. I liked it well enough, but really would it rather stay a nice place to visit on a weekend getaway while living in Lisbon. It's about a 3 hour drive between the two places and since the company had rented us a standard transmission it was left for me to drive because Himself can't drive a stick .. which is the segue for my first bit of criminal activity. (Couldn't go all the way to Europe and not cause a least a bitatruble!)

Okay, so going from the 22 onto A2 to get back to Lisbon from Algarve, you have to go through a toll which spits out a ticket to be paid when you get off the highway for use of the highway. If you don't get off the highway, then a bit before you get back into Lisbon, you have to pay the toll via the cashier or, you might have a month pass which lets you go through an express toll (sans cashier).

If I had been able to actually read the language, I would have gotten into the correct lane to start with .. as it is though, (you've probably guessed already) I went into the wrong lane and with the amount of traffic, I couldn't back out and go to the cashier lane so I went through the express pass lane where a picture was taken of the rental car so they could fine it (which is a double fine than the regular toll.) The regular toll for the expanse we travelled was about 18 Euros (multiply by 1.57 for USA dollars) .. and now it's doubled. Quite a nice racket going on to be able to drive the highways of Portugal!

Needless to say, I'm a bit freaked that I've just committed some major infraction that will either get me deported or thrown in jail! Himself thinks, of course, the whole thing is hilarious .. rat Bastid. My first plan is to get off the highway at the next exit, turn around and go through the toll booth after explaining what happened to a cashier. Well, the next exit was about 20 km away and there was no way to get back onto the highway without having to go through another toll booth which would end up compounding the situation. Himself read the back of the toll ticket and there was a number to call for help with different situations so when we got back to our hotel in Lisbon, I called and after several attempts did get through to someone who spoke some English. She assured me that foreign visitors make that mistake all the time and it's not big deal.. no I won't be arrested at the airport for trying to leave the country and no, I won't be deported. ::laughs:: Whew.

Okay, so the process is when we drop the car off at the Lisbon airport, just explain what happened to the rental agent as this happens all the time. Turn the ticket over to the rental agent who, in turn will send it on to the state with the appropriate fee.

Sounds good, easy fix.

Riiiiiiiight.

Our flight was scheduled to leave for Dublin at 5:10 AM which meant getting to the airport by 3 AM.

Guess who's not open at 3 AM!

Bingo! The car rental agency. Not a soul to be found. Leave the keys in the box, thanks for stopping by!

Eek! Ack! Ick! Am I back to being deported or arrested now????

Nope .. no body cavity searches for me - at least not by members of the Portuguese government .. or, at least, not at this time. [8D] (Mores the pity!)

What will happen: the car rental agency will get the ticket. They will send it on to the company which rented the car which will be charged the fine. We have to mail the toll ticket to the company who will send it to the car agency who, in turn will send it in to whereever those things go.

Problem solved! Whew part 2.

Okay, so causing some trouble in Portugal wasn't enough. I mean, we visited several countries .. but as this is already too long in the tooth, I'll leave the adventures in Ireland and London for another post. (I actually managed to get through Amsterdam without causing even a LittleBitaTruble. Go me!)

More later. [;)]

Oh, no.. we couldn't get an Internet connection to save our lives in Portugal! We got back home Sunday night after being gone the prior couple of weeks and my body is finally back on USA time zones. lol

That's one country I've never been to that I'd love to see, Portugal.
I cancelled a trip to Ireland this summer because of the exchange rate, I don't want to pay 50% more for everything and Ireland's expensive anyway.

Vendaval -> RE: Adventures in Europe: BitaCriminal Activity! (8/8/2008 2:37:15 PM)

Lol...Celeste, glad the trip went so well.  You are far braver than I to attempt driving in another country.  Do you have photos up on Flicker or another site to share?

Take care,

Glad you had a good time!

Driving in Europe is one thing that I really enjoyed; it was always an adventure to find out where you would end up.  I also love driving a manual transmission and it just didn't make sense to have one in South Florida.

The only bad spot driving was in Rome....  The cars in front of us made 4 different lanes to turn left... then when you turned it went down to one lane immediately!!!  We ended up on the freaking sidewalk.

glad you had fun,Celeste!  I haven't driven while in Europe.. I think I'd do ok, once I figured out the traffic signs..:)

And good for you for getting in and out of Amsterdam safely! LMAO!!

(notes that it is not a really good idea to wear a jersey that says 'mindaltering'on it when going through customs at Schipol, on the way back to the US)

Popeye, I highly recommend Portugual. We asked some of the locals for a great place to get some seafood and they suggested a little place on Santa Marta in the heart of Lisbon. We went there for a meal and I have to admit that I haven't had fish that good since leaving San Francisco. The people are amazing! Everyone was friendly, plied us with free drinks (they seem to really love Americans) and we met some great people including this one family with the Grandpa, the Grandma, the Aunties, the parents and about 5 kids at Eugardo Park. They didn't speak English, we didn't do to well in the Portuguese department but we managed to use what we had with sign language in between and had a blast with them! It was funny because Grandpa took the lead in the conversation and anytime he said I word I didn't comprehend, he would repeat it.. only louder .. as if shouting it at me was going to make me understand him. We were all laughing together by the time we parted company!  Everywhere we went in Portual, whether the heart of the city or the coast it was the same welcoming feeling. The one thing which was really surprising is that I didn't realize how hilly it was. I guess my brain disengaged when looking at all the photos and doing my research prior to going, but it was a lot like driving in San Fran!

Vendaval, oh yes.. we have tons of pictures! lol Himself is getting them together, adjusting the lighting and such and going to email them to me to upload this weekend, so I should have them up fairly soon. I'll share the link when I do. :)

Kyra, I'm not used to driving so the 5 hours we were lost trying to find the first hotel in Portugal (only an hour lost trying to find the second one!), the 6 hours round trip to Algarve and back and the general driving around really did a job on my knee by the time we left for Ireland. That was about the only downside .. that and all the .. not sure what they are called, but the merry-go-rounds of the roads in towns. It's one of those Twilight Zone things.. once you manage to get on a roundabout, you can't get off it! ::laughs::

Greedy, hehe.. I really did try to behave everywhere .. but, yanno, shit happens sometimes and I didn't mean to do the stuff I did. It was all accidental! I swear! That's my story and I'm sticking to it and you can't prove anything anyway! :P

Best part of the trip:

Lisbon - that little place on Santa Marta where we ate and the People! Lisbon Zoo was a bit disappointing because they had so many of the exhibits down for construction but it was fun riding the Metro all by myself while Himself was at the business meetings. I just got to enjoy and go exactly where I wanted without a time frame. What a hoot and surprisingly inexpensive to ride it!

Ireland - Hands down, again, the People. My favorite guided tour was of Killmainham Gaol (got some great pics and only 5 Euros 50 cents and I'm not sure if I spelled that right!), favorite unguided was the Museum of History and Archeology (The National Library was a close second though). The only bummer about that was no pictures allowed in either of those two places. [:o] The Guiness Tour was a major disappointment. 14 Euros each for the unguided tour and just a complete waste of money. It would have been better to take that money and just go drink 14 Euros worth of Guiness! [8D] Grafton Street (right off St. Stephans Green) is a great place to shop and there was some wonderful street performers. Himself took video of a few of them so hopefully I'll be able to get those up when the pics go up. Weird weather in Ireland as well. We'd get up in the morning to amazing weather, walk somewhere and then all of a sudden we'd be in a downpour .. cold and wet .. then 10 mins later, the sun would be back out and all was bright again. Made for a bit of a puzzler trying to figure out the most appropriate dress for the day! All in all though, a great pleasure to visit Ireland and Himself has decided we're definately going back.

Oh, oh.. best Irish stew was at this little hole in the wall pub in Temple Bar. I couldn't believe how hard it was to find a place that actually sold authentic Irish cuisine! lol

kyraofMists -> RE: Adventures in Europe: BitaCriminal Activity! (8/9/2008 5:02:36 AM)

Getting lost is not so fun, especially when you first get there.  I was lucky when I visited Italy, because another researcher was there a couple weeks before me, so he could show me the way.  We did get lost in Rome, but we were not jet lagged either, so it was highly entertaining.

As for the merry-go-rounds, I just had to laugh.  They are definitely a test of daring... the most daring gets off first.  Our small little town here in Northern Canada is getting a round-a-bout and I cringe thinking of all the accidents new drivers are going to cause there.

The only creepy part about driving in Italy was that traffic cops would stand on the side of the road with radar guns and what looked like machine guns....

pahunkboy -> RE: Adventures in Europe: BitaCriminal Activity! (8/9/2008 6:00:40 AM)

an old co-worker went there.

she had to lie about being American.   I said, why would you even go if they dont like us?

[like they would never figure it out..]

Bita, I would comment on this thread, but my morals won't let me.  You being a hardened criminal and all.

popeye1250 -> RE: Adventures in Europe: BitaCriminal Activity! (8/9/2008 11:38:56 AM)

Bita, yeah, I love Ireland, spectacular scenery on the West coast and up North!
My grandparents came from Donegal (The Inishowen Peninsula) way up in the North and in the Republic.
I've been over three times.
And the people there are funny as hell!
How many days did you spend there and in Portugal?
I'd love to see your pics too!

BitaTruble -> RE: Adventures in Europe: BitaCriminal Activity! (8/9/2008 3:25:27 PM)

6 days in Portugual.. only 4 in Ireland which is why we're going back! Himself hasn't sent me the pics yet and I'm really hoping that my favorite video of the street dancer comes out so I can put that one up as well.
