Sadly, the notion of leadership in our society has gotten to the point where someone who is incapable of grasping the consequences of their actions, often rises to the top levels.

I think that's pretty much always been the case.   Politicians in the good ol days didn't have press hounding them when they went to visit their mistresses. It was known, but simply wasn't discussed in polite society.

cloudboy -> RE: John Edwards admits to affair (8/9/2008 6:46:07 AM)

I think he should have been more graphic in his media disclosure. He should have provided pictures too.

However this is America, and Americans care who their leaders are fucking.

I know, right? It's utterly ridiculous. What's pathetic is that Edwards felt the need to play the confession game in the media. He should have told them to fuck off, and start a precedent. So, he's a lying cheat and his private life's messy, but it's his business. Big deal. Most people are.

Does this sink his chance at the VP slot? I'm not sure he wanted it, anyway.

Maybe he found out that the Karl Rove machine had this information in its WAR CHEST.

MissIsis -> RE: John Edwards admits to affair (8/9/2008 6:55:27 AM)

It is rediculous that Americans care so much who is fucking who.  Seriously, maybe we should go back to the old days when we set up our politicians with lovers.  It might give us all something more important to be discussing.

I'm just glad it was with someone from the opposite sex.

kittinSol -> RE: John Edwards admits to affair (8/9/2008 6:59:39 AM)

Of course, the journo that hounded Edwards is British [&:] .

Says the guy kneeling in a basement dungeon, wearing a leather hood and a french maid's dress.... ROFLMAO!!!

What astounds me is that this is a big news story while I've heard next to nothing about McCain's affair.

With Vicki Iseman? Was that ever proven?

No, with Cindy McCain.  http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-divorce11-2008jul11,0,6546861.story?page=1

He dated her for 9 months while still living with his wife, who had waited for him while he was held captive in Vietnam.  I'm not bringing this up to make Edwards look better, I just don't understand the shock and outrage when it's a democrat's affair, while McCain gets a free pass from the media.  Is it because it was a long time ago?  What's the statute of limitations on when past adultery is ok in politicians.

If Bill Clinton were to run in ten years for Govenor of New York, would his affair be ignored as well?  It just seems like a double standard to me.

Edited to add:  As soon as I navigated away from here, there was a link on Yahoo's front page to this story: http://www.slate.com/blogs/blogs/trailhead/?y=1

I guess that's considered old news, versus this just breaking with Edwards, is why there's little talk over it.

As for Clinton... no, it probably wouldn't be overlooked. He's much more polarizing than McCain, for one thing. Doesn't make it right, I'm just saying....

Steponme73 -> RE: John Edwards admits to affair (8/9/2008 10:35:20 AM)

He is a prime example of why the American public don't like or trust politicians.  They ALL lie, cheat, steal and do what is good for them and to Hell with the rest of us...He is scum

That's a fair answer.  I just don't like double standards.  Obama seems to be taking the high road, refusing to attack on this issue.  Combined with the press's silence, I think most people would be surprised to hear about this.  Though given that he's the republican nominee for president, I'd think that there would be more of a story about this.

Admission:  The only candidate I've ever given money to is Edwards.  I regret that now.  One big reason I gave him the money is because I respect Elizabeth so much.  I can't tell you how disgusted I am with Edwards.  It just seems to me (and maybe it's because I'm a newlywed), that if you make a vow to someone, you keep that vow.  I'm pretty sure that the Edwards or the McCains aren't swingers, so it just makes me sad.

Nader is the only one I've ever donated to [:D]. But yes, I hate lying, and I hate deceit, but I realize we're all human, and we all screw up.

Anyway, congrats on getting married [;)]

True dat.

Just once it would be a refreshing change of pace for a politician caught sleeping around to look the cameras dead on and say loudly: "Damn straight I banged that bitch."

and this mean what to me??? This is between his wife and him. This is not something that means crap to the general public. I don't care if my leader is a gimp or a bull lesbian behind closed doors!
