No, this is not a story from The Weekly World News!
And this aint no chupacabra, yo!

"38 dead after being bitten by vampire bats"
Caracas, Venezuela
Associated Press

"Laboratory investigations have yet to confirm the cause, but the symptoms point to rabies, according to two researchers from the University of California at Berkeley and other medical experts.

The two UC Berkeley researchers -- the husband-and-wife team of anthropologist Charles Briggs and public health specialist Dr. Clara Mantini-Briggs -- said the symptoms include fever, body pains, tingling in the feet followed by progressive paralysis, and an extreme fear of water. Victims tend to have convulsions and grow rigid before death."

We really need a better treatment for rabies.

Yeah, it is a nasty way to die and the shots in the stomach are supposed to be awful!

They're not pleasant but the big problem is there is a rather narrow window of no more than six days after being bitten. Also it is important to know that teh closer the bite is to the brain, spinal cord and glands the faster the infection takes hold and the shorter the window such that bites to the face can be fatal even if the first innoculations are giving less than 24 hours after exposure.

According the wiki article the shots are no longer into the belly though.

Good to know.  That was the threat used by grown-ups about petting stray dogs or wild critters, rabies shots in the stomach!

I'd still avoid ppetting unknown dogs and wild things. Rabies is deadly and the shots are still a series over a month and suspicion of rabies is a death sentence for any animal.

Yes, of course one should not pet stray dogs nor try to touch wild animals.  Like the moron tourists who come here and try to pet the 3,000 - 5,000 lbs elephant seals!

Canine rabies has been eliminated in the U.S.  So unless you live in an area (like me) where dogs are likely to come in contact with wild animals, you don't need to worry about rabid dogs all that much.  The main carriers around here are raccoons, and most people know to stay away from them.  In the Midwest, skunks are the main carriers.  I think everyone knows to stay the hell away from a skunk.  Bats in North America don't tend to bite humans unless you fuck with them.  An interesting factoid about caves inhabited by bats though......it's possible to contract rabies by breathing in mucus from an infected animal.  It's more likely for this to happen in an enclosed space where infected animals congregrate, like caves.

Good to know all of the above, but the last part, just ewww! [:'(]

ok new hard limit, breathing in mucous, no matter if its from a rabid animal or anything, that just made my stomach scream

bipolarber -> RE: Vampire bats kill 38 persons (8/9/2008 7:27:29 AM)

Okay, radies treatments have improved over the last few years... you no longer need to inject the treatment into the front of the spine, by passing the needle through the abdomen. Still, the treatment is pretty traumatic. High fever, convusions and muscular cramping are pretty common... but it still beats the alternative.

So, did the villiagers bury the 38 with proper precautions? Mouths filled with garlic and sewn shut, stake through the heart, decapitation... that sort of thing?

I thought you had to also burn the remains at sunrise and scatter them over water?

angelicbitch -> RE: Vampire bats kill 38 persons (8/10/2008 2:46:32 AM)

It is my understanding that when someone recieves rabies shots they are in the arm now. And I don't believe its as many as they use to give I think now you get 3 shots or something like that instead of the 8 they use to give you ... either way it would suck bad. There was a guy here in Ohio not far from where I live that was attacked by a "big cat" walking up his driveway. His neighbors had reportedly seen a Mountain Lion roaming around. He supposedly punched this animal in the head three times to get it off of him after it leapt on him. Freaky stuff .... He is okay got stitches in his lil finger for a bite.

Peace

That man acted very quickly which helped him survive.   I checked your profile to see whereabouts you live in the country.  We have mountain lions in the rural areas here that sometimes take smaller livestock or house pets for food.  A few people have been attacked, some fatally.

A guide for protecting yourself and your family from mountain lions is available from the California Dept of Fish and Game -

Well, this sort of thing is happening more and more... we keep building our suburban housing tracts into their habitat, so they move into ours... The rate of kids and small dogs being mauled by wild animals has jumped dramatically over the last 50 years.

velvetears -> RE: Vampire bats kill 38 persons (8/10/2008 8:17:51 AM)

There was a case years ago of a 12 year old girl in CT who died of rabies, very sad story. They had no idea she was bitten until they searched her body and found a tiny bite, so small it could have been mistaken for a bug bite. They think a baby bat must have flown into her room at night through the cracks and bitten her in her sleep.  I used to look up at my ceiling at night scouring it for any signs of cracks a tiny bat might fit through.

bipolarber -> RE: Vampire bats kill 38 persons (8/10/2008 1:18:09 PM)

Or lets see...

You could bury them face down, at a crossroads...

Staking them through the heart (Aspen wood is best)

Unfortunately, the sun really doesn't make them explode... it just causes them to become dormant, "like real dead."

There are anti vampiric rituals you could ask your local Father/Rabbi to perform... (good luck convincing him that they need to be done though.)

I'll have to re-read the "Vampire: His Kith and Kin" by Sommers one of these days. Several of the more obscure methods escape me at the moment.
