I'm watching a DVD of them playing at Montroux festival in 1976. The date seems historic, yet the music still seems futuristic. Wayne Shorter is awesome on sax as is Jaco Pastorius on bass (maybe the greatest bass player who ever lived), and the other fellers can play too.

Anyone else?

You kidding?

It was a band of already well-established jazz superstars when it was formed. Hell, these guys all worked with Miles (as well as with many, many other great musicians).

Zawinul and Pastorius are deeply missed.

As great as so many musicians are today, you don't see guys like this often.

Now and then it seems that a combination like this comes together, Jaco had his own style (& was instrumental in the development of fretless bass techniques) and for many it's a love it or hate it observation. For a current but similar observation you might want to check out Victor Wooten and his performances with some of the folks he teams up with. Again, it is a matter of taste, but currently he is arguably the hot item as far as bass players go, certainly not mainsteam, but his talent jumps out loud and clear.

I bathed in WR and Jaco most of my life; my brother's a bass player, and they are his heroes.

Love them and was lucky enough to see them live, as a teen.

Sorry, but Jack Casady is the world`s greatest bassist.

I love Weather Report. Reminds me - I haven't pulled their albums out in a dog's age!

Thanks for the reminder!

I can't imagine what's "love/hate" about Jaco, as he's clearly one of the most influential bassists of the 20th century--and everyone has heard his work, even if only from Joni Mitchell tracks.

Victor Wooten is not really so innovative, but he's certainly an amazing bassist, stretching esablished styles of playing to their limits. Primarily he works with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (their electronic percussionist, "Futureman," is Victor's brother).

My son  plays various instruments, his favorites are electric bass and double bass, he has gone through a period of Jaco worship.  I'm guessing many bass players have at some time.

When my brother was an early teen, he tried to talk my dad into letting him go to a WR concert.  My dad, not knowing the group. said no way - he was too young.  My brother didn't have any records to play him, so he called the radio station and explained his situation to the DJ (this was when you could actually interract with DJ's and could make requests because they had control of their own playlists).

So then he turns the radio way up and tells my Dad to just listen. The DJ gets on and says "This is to "Joe's" father - you have to take him to this show.  Just listen to this stuff!"  My Dad was floored and went out and got two tickets.  He may have enjoyed the concert more than my brother did.

My brother went on to become a great "funk" bass player.  He loved Jaco but his real slappin' bass hero is Stanley Clarke.

What a wonderful story!

And Stanley Clarke is awesome. I saw him two years ago playing ACOUSTIC bass with Bela Fleck and Jon-Luc Ponty. Scary good. Amazing stuff.

Remember "Return to Forever"?

Return to Forever just had a reunion tour, but I didn't go.  I've seen Stanley a few times - love him.  The last time I saw him was at Yoshi's in Oakland and we were invited backstage.  Fun stuff.

I saw him with George Duke at the old Circle Star in San Carlos (outside SF) yeeears ago.  Also saw the Rite of Strings tour, with Jean Luc Ponte and Al Dimiola - wow was that awesome.  Talk about overwhelming talent on a stage.

Great story about your dad and brother, NuevaVida!  Seems like we have similar tastes in music too.

My brother still admires them greatly, but I think it's justified - great art remains modern and transcends age, tastes, and fashion.

It's funny, this thing about brothers being great jazz bassists :-) .

 - there's probably a good reason why the band named themselves that :-) .
