yesterday when I tried (and succeeded) in lifting bag after bag of potting soil. I couldn't find an employee to help and I was in a major hurry

Do not do that on your own again.

does anyone know what would help ease the pain?

Stretch the muscles and keep each stretch position for at least thirty seconds for as many days as it takes.
You might try to sleep on a soft air mattress.
Other than that it is waiting until it stops eventually. Might take two weeks.
It seems to be a simple muscle pain, so a visit to your doctor is not necessary.

Rule it feels very much like only muscle pain.. and I know it was stupid of me to move all that myself. I was in a panicky hurry, couldn't find anyone and well there was a time not too long ago that hefting those bags would have been no big deal.
There are times I refuse my limitations, usually from an emotional issue like being angry. Lesson learned on this one at least for now.

Thanks for the stretching directions, I've begun doing that.

How appropriate of a post as I just returned from my MRI results which show I get to have back operation number 7.  Sounds to me that you strained a muscle and it is not a herniated disc.  I hope things get better.

ugh!  back surgery #7??  you have more intestinal fortitude than i!  couldn't do it, nope, no way.  watched mom go thru two fusions, not for me!  i'd have to be in unbelievable agony before i'd even consider it.  best of luck!!

Go to a doctor as soon as humanly possible. I would also reccomend going to a good chirpopractor asap. Most general practicioners will probably just toss a handful or pain meds at you and call it a day. Back pain is nothing to mess around with when it's severe, and putting things off will just mean more problems in the long run. Hope you feel better soon.
