We have always told who ever we are interested in we will come get you if you dont have a car, or will give you gas money when you get here to help with travel. Then after 3 months if you are not happy or this just isnt working we will take you where you want to go. We did get to see some great things and made a mini vacation out of it after I calmed down and relaxed a bit.

I have had many online go "poof" and normally they just change their
screen names and eventually resurface.
I have been fortunate enough to not have them go "poof" when it is time to meet.

Think of it this way, what if you actually met her and helped her relocate, and
put in more time and money, and then she went poof?
It really could have been a lot worse.
Be glad you were spared wasting more time with or on her.

She could afford a hotel room but not a bus ticket?

And why would you spend all that time driving, as well as the money on gas. Why not send her a plane ticket? Can't have been too far a difference in the two.

Wait, you had never met but she was coming to stay for 3 months?????

My very first experience in D/s-a Dom did the same thing. We were talking online, he'd agreed to make me his sub and I was very deeply emotionally involved and then he disappeared. Course, this was *after* we met in person and he tried to have sex with me w/o protection and I refused...I suspect that had something to do with it. Still, I was devastated until I realized that he was just a jackass player. And it scared we away from D/s for a long time.

I'm sorry this happened to you but perhaps you should take a bit more time getting to know someone.

I see several red flags -- someone is willing to move to you, almost immediately on the strength of "we'll pick you up"? A person without ties, a place to live, and willing to do that is probably not someone I want to get involved with.

She was "staying" somewhere, but she was in a hotel? All very odd to me.. and would really send me running.

You might want to get to know people a bit better before putting out all that effort and money. I wouldn't do it.

since, then i have tempered my excitement and i am able to keep my head clear enough to not be in the wrong place, when i am meeting a Dominant.

I've had local no shows. But any time considerable travel has been involved, there's been enough groundwork done and they've turned up. While it seems the OP might have been a bit premature in her plans, no show sucks!
